Will we get sick?

Baked a cake. Eggs had been in the fridge previous. Since found out that the eggs I used had actually been sat out on the kitchen side from 11am-6pm when I used them for the cake. Will we get sick??!

OP questions like this baffle me.

When did people start to think eggs (and butter) needed to kept in the fridge or else they'd turn into poison in a few hours. WTF has that come from?

In my entire life of over 50 years I've never put eggs in the fridge. As it happens I've just had some that were 2 days out of date when I cooked them so had probably been out of the fridge for around a month and they were fine. As was I.

dementedpixie · 07/12/2024 20:22

Lots of recipes ask for room temperature eggs so if they are stored in the fridge they would need to be taken out to be warmed up anyway

Sorry - I shouldn’t have said that.

I never put my eggs in the fridge.

But do you put them all in one basket?

Nc546888 · 07/12/2024 20:26

OP this is just daft, stop being silly

Ginmonkeyagain · 07/12/2024 20:27

Of course you won't get sick, what on earth do you think is going to happen to fresh eggs kept at room temperature in winter for a few hours? Also, why are you keeping eggs in the fridge in the first place you absolute lunatic.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 07/12/2024 20:27

Eggs last for weeks.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 07/12/2024 20:27

Eggs do not need to be in the fridge. The difference in temperature is irrelevant!

Ginmonkeyagain · 07/12/2024 20:28

That said, I shared a kitchen at university with a girl who kept bread in the fridge. Now that was just deranged.

yeshimabet · 07/12/2024 20:29

Yep, you're a goner.

XmasElfOnTheShelff · 07/12/2024 20:30

No. My eggs arrive in a refrigerated lorry and I don’t put them in the fridge when at home. I don’t like them refrigerated.

TeenLifeMum · 07/12/2024 20:30

In USA they keep them in the fridge. Not sure why but it’s the norm.

IvysMum12 · 07/12/2024 20:31

I always get eggs out of the fridge the night before if I'm baking.
Much better volume at room temperature.
Supermarkets don't keep eggs in the chiller cabinets.

I’m worried about the temperature change from them being in the fridge to then being at room temp and used

Are you UK based? UK we don't keep eggs in the fridge. There is no need to. USA I believe from an American friend they do some kind of sanitisation on the eggs that mean they then need to be refrigerated. I suppose it's like chicken in UK or chlorinated USA chicken. Different production methods.

XmasElfOnTheShelff · 07/12/2024 20:33

@TeenLifeMum because the eggs are washed and it does something to the protective layer of the shell or something like that.

Why would you be worried about that? They literally go from inside a hot bird to being laid straight into the December air. It’s fine.

TeenLifeMum · 07/12/2024 20:30

Because of how they clean them/sanitise them, it removes the protective layer, so has to be kept in the dridge

They need to in the USA, as they wash them which gets rid of the cuticle which protects the eggs from bacteria.

We don't do that here in the UK, so we have the choice. I keep mine in the fridge because I don't use many, and they do keep longer in the fridge. But if I used more, I probably wouldn't.

No. Do you have issues with anxiety?

Kool4katz · 07/12/2024 20:34

Unless you live in a country that processes eggs differently, you don’t need to refrigerate store bought eggs.

Assuming you’re in the U.K. or Ireland, you’ll be fine but you might want to read up on basic food hygiene as you sound a bit clueless to be honest and you’ll be doing yourself a favour in the long run.

I keep chickens so my eggs aren’t date stamped and they’re not kept in a fridge. I generally use eggs that up to 4 weeks old without any problem although I crack them into a small dish to check before cooking with them.

Ginmonkeyagain · 07/12/2024 20:38

Easy way to tell if eggs are past their best is to fill a pint glass with cold water and put the egg in. If it float don't use it.

Potatosaladsalsa · 07/12/2024 20:43

You’ll be absolutely fine - I routinely keep eggs on the side and I’ve taken them out of fridge and put back in when I temporarily don’t have enough room for them! Side note, eggs are pretty clearly spoiled when they are, as in the yolk breaks so you’d have realised - also would have smelt horrid

YouveGotNoBloodyIdea · 07/12/2024 21:01

interesting factoid

In America they have to keep eggs in the fridge because, by law (AIUI) they have to be washed before sale. This removes the protective coating on the shell so they have to go in the fridge.

In the UK it is the opposite - illegal to wash them - they have to still have the protective coating on the shell so they do not need refrigerating.

I used to keep chickens, some of them were not that particular where they laid frankly - we did wash the shit off the shells so they were kept in the fridge.

That’s exactly what I’m thinking. It’s not normal to worry like this at all.
