Burglary and neighbours cctv

Would you allow your near neighbour to view your doorbell footage cctv for the day on which there was a daytime burglary on their home?

OP posts:
Vaxtable · 07/12/2024 20:19

I would look myself, which is exactly what I did when a neighbour was burgled near me

No there was some back and forth but he was adamant he was reasonable in wanting a 'policeman' to visit him.

He's quite reasonable in saying that.

The police can view it as part of an investigation, but he doesn't need to provide it to Miss Marple. Most neighbours would choose to allow you to view it, but they don't have to and it's not unreasonable to say no.

He obviously had his reasons 🤷‍♀️

It’s completely unreasonable to not try and assist in this situation. Neighbour is a dickhead.

TheCrenchinglyMcQuaffenBrothers · 07/12/2024 21:32

Presumably he is concerned that passing on the data his Ring doorbell has collected may breach privacy laws and that’s why he only wants to hand it over to the police and not OP? That has been tested in law btw so he may be being cautious.

LIZS · 07/12/2024 21:39

Only police have the legal right to view footage. You might be able to get a pcso to speak to them.

SD1978 · 07/12/2024 22:33

Yes I would, if it had any relevance. He doesn't have to show you, and I'd be more pissed off if he did have evidence that the police weren't making the time to go and view it personally. I also would in future provide nothing for/ to them because I'm petty

Noseybookworm · 07/12/2024 23:17

Can't you speak to the police and ask them to view his CCTV? Maybe also time to get your own security cameras so you don't have to rely on neighbours footage in the future!

Gunz · 07/12/2024 23:18

If the Police get involved they will visit anybody in the vincity with a Ring doorbell and ask whether you captured anything. Early last year a house was burgled in my village middle of the night when the occupants were in bed. Police went round checking Ring footage.

Ginkypig · 07/12/2024 23:22

I have had neighbour's a few times asking if my ring has picked up whatever thing they were asking about. Each time I have looked and let them know that either no nothing or shown them something so they could check if was relevant but only once ever sent a particular video as that was a friend who happens to be a neighbour and the footage was of her ringing the door with an injured pigeon.

Police got involved alright! We had around £60k of things nicked, and £30k of damage to property as we've got expensive bifold doors they smashed.

In ypur case, people being in the property at the time is a massive aggravating factor that's why they would have done that. Also Perhaps your policing area had more resources and time. Here they can't throw much even at high value burglaries.

The police told me to ask neighbours to view their cctv but they were not one bit interested in going to someone's house to see what they could see.

Has he / will he look at the footage himself and tell you if a numberplate of a car going past at x time is visible? If it's not then it's probably no more help than your other neighbours. If it is, then maybe the police might be more inclined to go have a look?

duckydoo234 · 08/12/2024 00:59

My parents volunteered footage after a neighbour was burgled. They were then told they could be called as witnesses at any time - it wasn't good enough to submit the footage, they had to actually vouch for it in person - and had to be available to go to court, or risk contempt of court. This went on for about 2 years, during which they were given no more information than "at any time", meaning they could not plan ANYTHING, book holidays, plan to do anything. Eventually they thought "f* this" and got on with their life, but stressed no end until then. So they tried to help, and were more or less held ransom for 2 years. Never again. THAT is why people refuse to help.

Itslookinglikeabeautifulday · 08/12/2024 01:05

In summer 2023, following a cold-caller's attempt to rip off my elderly, vulnerable relative at his home, police visited him. (The culprit had succeeded in ripping off other people nearby). The police officer later emailed me a link so I could upload my relative's Ring doorbell footage directly to them. Could you request such a link be emailed to your neighbour so he can upload the footage? It was called an Axon email link (and this was Kent Police so no idea whether your local force have similar).

B1anche · 08/12/2024 04:18

I probably would for most of my neighbours, but there is one household that I would be reluctant to help because they are absolute arseholes. You've not done anything to piss him off have you?

Having said that, surely it's in your neighbour's interest to help catch the thieves, as his house could be targeted next.

PeloMom · 08/12/2024 06:25

He can download the footage (I assume you have the approximate time from the other cctv) so shouldn’t take more than 10 mins

user1492757084 · 08/12/2024 06:27

Why didn't you ask the Police to visit?

Edingril · 08/12/2024 06:31

I would hand it the police

Chowtime · 08/12/2024 06:43

Hes probably up to something dodgy and doesn't want to get caught.

Oh it's a reverse. How exceedingly tedious.

how is it a reverse? are you assuming which pov the OP is?

eurochick · 08/12/2024 08:00

When we were burgled I put a message on the local Facebook group and a neighbour emailed me the footage while I was on the train home from work. Unfortunately it was not clear enough to be useful but it was quite disconcerting to see some little scrote looking through my front windows, nipping around the back, then the car I had had for four days gone from the driveway. They were done in less than ten minutes, in which time they took all my jewellery (christening bracelets, eighteenth birthday present, presents from my husband) as well as the car. It was devastating. I would always help a burglary victim in any way I could.

Thank you. It's horrible that happened to you as well. Just knowing they were inside as well as the sentimental value of things thst can't be replaced.

Not a new Range Rover by any chance?
They have to be quick after a new car is delivered to pinch those.

Nope, burglary was between 9.30am and about 5pm so no idea when it took place.

In that time, the other cctv showed about 30 cars passing, but nobody numberplate visible.
