Don’t like It’s A Wonderful Life

Watched it for the first time many years ago and a few Christmases since. I’ll concede the sentiment is lovely but OMG, the acting and the script are jarring

I hate it. It goes on forever. Hate him. Hate his wife even more and that stupid bloody song she sings. Hate their kids. Hate the angel and his constipated smile. Hate that the bad guy isn’t punished. Hate it.

Welcome to the world of non- instant gratification.
The point is the the layers of the plot build.
Stick to tiktok

I see what you’re saying, of course. Yes, the gratification isn’t instant. I think you’ve hit the nail on the head. I don’t subscribe to Tik Tok, insta, Facebook or any of that tho

Another great post. Different doesn't mean bad! Black and white films are often extremely beautiful to watch because there was such care and attention given to the lighting and the framing of the shots. The Third Man comes to mind here.

Or Brief Encounter (which is superb)

so basic

They’re really not 🤣

Boomer55 · 07/12/2024 16:54

No, I think it’s a corny, hammy film. But each to their own. 🙂

Hoglet70 · 07/12/2024 16:55

I absolutely love it and bah humbug to anyone who doesn't share my view! Go off and watch something else then.

Cattery · 07/12/2024 16:55

Of course.

But the Acting was of it's time surely?
Theatrical, but at least they enunciated.
Give me an oldie any day over the mumbling and muttering New York dialect - hidden under booming music - any day.

Any Denzel film being the exception here o'course 😍

secretfreckle · 07/12/2024 16:17

One of my absolute favourite films of all time.
The bit with Mr Gower and the wrong tablets always makes me cry.
Mary is brilliant - the scene where she's on the phone to HeeHaw Sam Wainwright while George is there and she's trying to make him jealous, the way she rallies the whole town at the end.
Useless Uncle Billy!
Sassy Violet Bick!
Yes, it's very quaint and the acting is of its time but still superb. It came out in 1946!
'George Bailey, the richest man in town'
Love love love it ❤️❤️❤️

Edited

Me too x

Dontlletmedownbruce · 07/12/2024 17:15

I like it but there are a few things that frustrate me. George's shouty voice! And Mary's lack of character. She was such a good person and supportive but her total lack of stress at her own situation annoys me. Even one conversation about it would remedy that.

My favourite scene is when he waves goodbye cheerily to Sam's fancy car then kicks his own. It really captures a person who is deeply jealous but also a very decent person who doesn't want to feel that way.

Lorrymum · 07/12/2024 17:25

I love it! I watch it every Christmas Eve and have seen it in the cinema a few times. I even have IAWL Christmas tree decorations I bought several years ago in the U.S.
I think Vue cinemas are showing it this year.

MissMarplesNiece · 07/12/2024 17:50

Awful film, all that bloody squawking from James Stewart, puts me right off it. I'm afraid because of that film he is now known as "The Squawker" in this house - as in " The Squawker is in that cowboy film that's on the tv". And as if James Stewart isn't noisy enough on his own there's an overlong scene with a wretched child banging away on a piano.

HauntedBungalow · 07/12/2024 18:04

Thanks @Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g , I thought your take on the economic aspect was really interesting. It certainly challenges unchecked capitalism.

@CurlyhairedAssassin agree about the home-maker aspect. For a 1940s audience, being able to live on one wage was something to aspire to.

Topsy44 · 07/12/2024 18:10

I’ve only ever managed to watch some of it and then I give up because it doesn’t seem to be going anywhere!

MintShaker · 07/12/2024 18:12

It's a truly dreadful film.

ghostyslovesheets · 07/12/2024 16:37

My kids liked Elf but it’s not a great film. Agree LA is utter dirge

one of my favourite Christmas films isn’t available anywhere - it was with the dad from Modern Family - he had to collect his girlfriends spoiled private school son after his dad let him down and drive him cross country to his mum. It was funny and touching - it might have been called ‘driving me home’?

but I always watch Krampus and National Lampoon every year along with IAWL

Can you confirm the name of that movie about driving home? I like the sound of it but can't find any reference to it!

ProssecoSparkle · 07/12/2024 19:09

It's a wonderful life used to be my favourite Christmas film until someone on here recommended the bishops wife.

I love everything about its a wonderful life its just one of those films that gives you a warm hug and Christmas magic.

Edited - another one who would like to see your Christmas decorations.

WearyAuldWumman · 07/12/2024 15:57

That's the one aspect of the film that I've always found annoying. Plus - I'm paraphrasing here:

"What's happened to Mary?"

"You're not going to like it George... she's a...a...a...SPINSTER!"

I think it's even worse, they call her an old maid.

Which of course makes no sense because if George hadn't existed she probably would have married Sam. Either way there is no way Mary would be single.

I remember even as a child thinking that it was quite peculiar.

I also wondered why her eyes at deteriorated in the alternative universe - I don't recall seeing her wearing glasses elsewhere in the film. I remember thinking "Reading a lot doesn't do that to you!"

ismu · 07/12/2024 19:29

I think people complaining about Mary being and old maid are missing the central premise of the film- everyone is unique and makes a contribution they can never understand. Obviously the two leads were made for each other and could never be with anyone else - pure romance ! And of course their kids wouldn't have been born, so making her have different children to another man would mean depicting her alternative children as horrid. Which isn't very Christmassy!!!

Sorry, I am useless with technology!
You can see similar on eBay listed as "Enesco Its A Wonderful Life Decorations." Quite surprised at the amount people are asking, I only paid a few dollars for each one.
