Don’t like It’s A Wonderful Life

Watched it for the first time many years ago and a few Christmases since. I’ll concede the sentiment is lovely but OMG, the acting and the script are jarring

If you can get past the piano scene where he yells at his daughter without crying, you're dead inside

cariadlet · 07/12/2024 13:19

I put off watching It's a Wonderful Life for years because I have contrary tendencies and sometimes irrationally take against things which I feel I should watch or read. I was the same with Casablanca.

When I finally got round to watching both films, I absolutely loved them and wished I hadn't put off watching them for so long.

But Miracle on 34th Street? When Kris uses sign language with the little girl?
And everyone is showing ' I believe ' or 'We believe' pins and posters?
Tears every time. Every year.

The remake was okay, but the original one from the late forties was better. I cry every time during the part with the Dutch orphan girl.

I suspect I’d find it more jarring than I do if James Stewart’s character was a woman, doing all that self-sacrificing. But then, temperamentally, I’d have skipped off out of town like Gloria Bick without a backward glance.

It's a film about a man trapped in the life of a woman. Sacrificing all his dreams for others. That's why it's interesting and still relevant, IMO.

If it was a woman, no one would think twice. (like "Family man", with Nicolas Cage, where the wife is just the perfect selfless supporting person and seems to be happy with that...)

YANBU

I thought I'd love it. Story sounded good, I can make allowances for old films and hammy acting...

Nope. Never been able to get past the patronising cheese of the first five minutes. It's terrible.

Yes! “George lassos the moon”. Grrrrr. The name of the kid, Zhou Zhou (or something). Lots I can’t stand

So it's therefore ridiculous to worry about its "theological nonsense". It's just magic to serve the plot, no different to Frozen or Cinderella or Harry Potter.

How awful of me to express my opinion.
I will check with you in future before saying anything in case it’s “ridiculous”. 🙄

the80sweregreat · 07/12/2024 14:02

I've never seen it , but I agree that Mary Poppins is overlong and a bit boring , but the suffragette segments did make me research that period of time when I was 10 ( library) , so something came good from a strange film
( plus the books are far better too!)
'It's a wonderful life ' was my late fils favorite film , but it didn't appeal to me.

You could always just think a bit harder about it yourself.

Wow. You’re so clever!

Whoarethoseguys · 07/12/2024 14:09

It's a great film.
And I don't understand how anyone can say that the acting is terrible.
James Stewart , Lionel Barrymore, Donna Reed and Harry Travers are all amazing actors.

It's perfectly OK for you to express your opinion on a movie.

I find it tedious.

It's the bit with the grieving pharmacist slapping George round the head that makes me go 😭

doodleschnoodle · 07/12/2024 14:13

YABU. Mr Gower at the start sets me off early doors and I just love the whole thing. Need to pencil in my pre-Christmas watch actually.

Cattery · 07/12/2024 14:13

@CourgettesCarrots Same. For me it focuses on the past for too long before the film gets going. Love Clarence the angel but I find the whole thing too sugar-coated and wrapped in a bow around George’s kids. I think that’s one of the problems for me

Cattery · 07/12/2024 14:15

Him shouting at the daughter is the best bit 🤣 The kids are tedious

I've had 2 husbands who adored/adore IAWL (not actually the types you'd think would sit sniffing through it) I've never let on that I find it a bit meh

Clarence is OK.

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g

thanks for that analysis, it makes sense (and me like it a bit more!)

Purplecatshopaholic · 07/12/2024 14:19

It’s dull, slow, in black and white which I dont like, and Jimmy Stewart is terrible anyway. So YANBU, lol. Each of us to their own. Gimme some Muppets or Elf or John McClane anytime!

lovelysunshine22 · 07/12/2024 14:20

Im glad im not the only one who hates it op! Its rubbish!

Cattery · 07/12/2024 14:21

Muppets, Elf; both glorious. 🎄❤️

If DH goes on about it and how it’s a morality tale etc (yes, I’m aware) I can feel my temper rising because it’s such a bore! Donna Reed can’t act.

SuperLemonCrush · 07/12/2024 14:28

I went to see it to cheer myself up once and found it really doomy. Don’t know if it was me or the film, but never felt inclined to watch it again. “White Christmas”, or the brilliant “Comfort & Joy”, that’s more like it!

Eminybob · 07/12/2024 14:31

I'm in camp Love It.

It's is sad in parts but the ending is beautiful. I love the crap acting. DH and I like to pepper our conversation with the odd "see, see"

Shinyandnew1 · 07/12/2024 14:34

I love it, I have to say.

I wish he didn’t shout at the poor teacher and that nasty man got his comeuppance though!
