To ask how often you upgrade your phone?

I used to upgrade my phone every 2 years when my contract ended, but i feel like I have got to the time of maturity where I have a fully working phone with no issues - there’s no need to upgrade it. I have a sim only plan which is up soon and I think I’m just going to extend it instead of getting a new phone. I feel like I’m just going to wait until this phone is in no longer working condition and then get a new phone.

so I guess I’m asking, are you all tech people and get a new phone every couple of years or are you someone who waits until it breaks until you get a new one?

If and when it breaks My Samsung S10 still going strong

If you're still using the samsung build on it you should look at either installing lineageos on it or replacing the phone. The S10 stopped getting security updates a year and a half ago.

Currently got an iPhone 7 Plus ! Is that now an antique?

Deliaskis · 05/12/2024 12:25

I have no interest in new tech for the sake of it, and am happy to keep a phone for years if it's still working. I do find though that after about 3-4 years I do start to encounter issues - battery life or build up of screen damage etc. or generally it just starts to glitch a bit and struggle with all I ask of it. It is probable that I contribute to this by not really paying much attention to memory and storage etc. but yes, usually about 3 years down the line most of my phones seem to stop doing their thing properly and I replace. I normally just ask for 'something similar' to what I already had.

mine is five years old. I don’t want to replace it but my Monzo bank account will no longer work on it some time next year, so I’m forced to change it.

Funnywonder · 05/12/2024 12:30

I need people to keep upgrading their phones because my last 4 phones are other people's castoffs🤣 I have an iPhone 11 at the moment and will use it until it dies (or someone who can't resist shiny new stuff lets me have their old one.)

This is exactly the kind of thing I hate .. aspects of the internet gradually packing up

Every 3ish years, to get a better camera

I get my partners hand me downs. I've had my current phone for 3 years and he had it for 2. I'll get a new (for me) one when he upgrades.

Same here. My DP upgraded at the weekend so i now have a new phone. The battery on my old phone was getting dodgy and it was that old it wasn't getting security/software updates anymore. I declined my "upgrade" last time he changed his phone as i cant be arsed with transferring everything, sorting passwords etc.
As long as i can make and receive calls/emails/WhatsApp, take a half decent photo and get online.... couldn't care less about having the latest models !

Tangled123 · 05/12/2024 12:38

I bought an iPhone 13mini at launch and would still be using it for at least another year if it hadn’t just refused to charge one day. I ordered a new one a month ago, and the very next day my old one started charging normally again. Really frustrating.

CrumbleyCrumpets · 05/12/2024 12:38

When it breaks or if the battery doesn't last longer than a couple of hours.

DazedAndConfused321 · 05/12/2024 12:46

Often, every year at least. But I donate my old phones directly to people who need them.

Secondclassstamps · 05/12/2024 12:50

I usually get about 4 years from my iPhone which I use for everything. I don’t have a laptop or any other device. I don’t replace till it’s showing signs of giving up on me. I bought my current iPhone 14s on 2 years interest free credit in the Apple shop which was cheaper than any contract monthly payments.

Then got a lebara monthly no contract sim. It was 99p a month for the first 6 months for 20gb and unlimited mins and texts. More than I need as I’m mostly on WiFi. I’m paying £6 a month now. I could look for another 99p deal but haven’t got around to it yet. Lebara is on the Vodafone network and no complaints. The best sim only no contract deals can usually be found on moneysavingexpert.com . This has reminded now to check tonight to improve on my £6 deal.

pinkroses79 · 05/12/2024 12:54

When it breaks, and can’t be repaired. Last one I dropped in the sea and it corroded. I don’t have phones on contract now, I always have sim only. Having said that, I like taking nice photos, so I quite enjoyed getting a new one with a better camera.

RogueFemale · 05/12/2024 12:56

When the phone is so old that the latest OS won't work on it, and therefore some crucial apps stop working. And when that happens (5-10 years), I buy a refurbished iphone, the previous year's model not the latest one.

And I have a pay-as-you-go thing with O2, £10 a month, and you can load credit so you're not always having to remember to pay the £10. Effectively the same as a contract but you can end it whenever you want.

SatinHeart · 05/12/2024 12:57

It's normally around 5 years for me, the battery generally starts to go by then. Also when they stop pushing out security updates for my phone, I start thinking about upgrading.

holjam · 05/12/2024 12:57

Every 4/5 years.
I used to change every 2 years when contract was up for renewal but honestly got sick of paying way more than I need when my phone is working perfectly fine!

isthesolution · 05/12/2024 12:57

When it breaks and the cost of repair is expensive. Probably every 4-5 years or so

MadmansLibrary · 05/12/2024 13:40

I upgrade every two years as per contract, but I usually clear and sell on the old handset. This one is particularly scratched and cracked, however, so I think I'll probably use some kind of offset scheme to get rid of it, or gift it to someone. They never sit in a drawer.

HappySquid · 05/12/2024 13:57

Mine is from 2017. Hoping to upgrade it next year as the battery performance isn't great now but it's fine otherwise so there's no need just yet.

DogInATent · 05/12/2024 14:02

When it breaks.
I have a well priced SIM-only contract (no baked in April price increases) and buy a new handset outright (usually from Amazon) when either the phone is completely broken or the battery starts to fail. My current phone is 3.5yo and still doing ok.

OliphantJones · 05/12/2024 14:31

I’m 44 and on my fourth phone since I got my first 27 years ago (aged 17). I had a Nokia first, then a Samsung flip phone, then an iPhone 6s and now an iPhone 14. I use them until they can’t be used anymore. Same as everything else I own…..car, clothes, electronics etc. I’ve had my t.v. for at least 15 years and it’s still going strong. If it works it’s fine. Its wasteful to constantly be upgrading everything for no reason.

HerSisterWasAWitch · 05/12/2024 14:37

Illpickthatup · 05/12/2024 11:09

When it stops working. And I always buy a refurbished phone rather than brand new.

Same.

awaq · 05/12/2024 14:37

I kept my IPhone SE until the apps stopped working (7 years). I replaced it with an iPhone 15 which I'll keep until the apps I use stop updating. I buy my phone outright.

Dutch1e · 05/12/2024 14:40

Used to be every two years when the contract ended but now as long as I can keep it going. With a heat gun and a few small tools I can change the battery so now it depends when they stop pushing Android updates to my current model.
