To ask how often you upgrade your phone?

I used to upgrade my phone every 2 years when my contract ended, but i feel like I have got to the time of maturity where I have a fully working phone with no issues - there’s no need to upgrade it. I have a sim only plan which is up soon and I think I’m just going to extend it instead of getting a new phone. I feel like I’m just going to wait until this phone is in no longer working condition and then get a new phone.

so I guess I’m asking, are you all tech people and get a new phone every couple of years or are you someone who waits until it breaks until you get a new one?

Actually, I guess you could say a con is that none of your unused data rolls over to the next month.

I’m on sim only. My data rolls over.

Superscientist · 05/12/2024 11:56

I've only ever bought phones outright and replace them when the cease to function.

MrBungle · 05/12/2024 11:59

Every 12months on the day of release...

Kids get my hand-me-downs

Life's short, I can afford it.

EveryDayisFriday · 05/12/2024 12:00

Every 2 years. It's my work phone and I need it to work 100%. Work pays. I pass my old phones down to DH and DC.

SophieStrange · 05/12/2024 12:01

I totally understand there’s a massive industry geared towards selling us new electronic tat under the guise of ‘upgrading’ but the technology really doesn’t advance rapidly enough to justify a new phone every two years.

Wait until there’s a solid technical reason - like compatibility or vendor support - or you’re just throwing money away to have a slightly brighter, slimmer version of what you already have.

GardenersDelight · 05/12/2024 12:03

When it needs it, which was last month as the young man I looked after managed to throw it and totally wreck the screen! 🤦🏼‍♀️
Went second hand and bought off back market which I thoroughly recommend. A 2024 model for half price that appears as new to me!

Jumell · 05/12/2024 12:04

Had my last one for 7 and a half years and no apps worked on it by the end - no internet apps anyway apart from a very outdated Facebook one !

GasPanic · 05/12/2024 12:05

Once every couple of years.

I buy Nokias. Got G42 at the moment. Cost me £120 because it's pink.

I don't really understand the whole pay crazy amounts for iphone stuff. I mean nearly all phones seem to be black squares to me.

TBF the apple experience is a lot smoother than android. But not worth paying stupid money for. Plus apple phones are almost impossible to use outside their system, whereas android it is easy to move files around, load your own mp3s etc.

I only see the point in upgrading to the fastest latest if you are playing high end games, because then you need the power.

RuthW · 05/12/2024 12:05

When the battery won't last til I'm home from work so roughly two years

PizzaPowder · 05/12/2024 12:05

I get my partners hand me downs. I've had my current phone for 3 years and he had it for 2. I'll get a new (for me) one when he upgrades.

Oblomov24 · 05/12/2024 12:06

We all still upgrade our iPhone every couple of years, buying them from the nearest Apple shop, selling the old one on local FB to a family for their child starting secondary for eg.

Bologneselove · 05/12/2024 12:06

I have an iPhone XS which I’ve had from new, it’s 7 years old , still works perfectly after I purchased a replacement battery. I’m tempted to update but won’t until necessary.

Julianne65 · 05/12/2024 12:06

I only update mine when it’s on its last legs. Usually about 2 years after the contract ends. It’s usually the battery that starts to go so I think this time I’ll just replace that.

Purplecatshopaholic · 05/12/2024 12:08

Wait until it breaks, the battery life drops to becoming really crap, or (in my most recent case) my dog tries to eat it..

DaisyChain505 · 05/12/2024 12:10

Watch the buy now! Documentary on Netflix and you’ll soon be thinking twice about everything you buy and upgrade.

I keep my phone until it stops working. Once my original contract period runs out I switch to sim only which lowers the cost considerably.

VarioPerfect · 05/12/2024 12:10

I’ve had mine for 4 years - still works fine! I’ll replace it when it breaks.

Did you ever have the N96 ?

got mine in 2009 and aw I loved it so much ! ❤️

Sturnidae · 05/12/2024 12:13

As little as I can. Usually every 3 to 5 years I think? I hate setting up a new phone, and it's wasteful. It's usually either the camera or the charging that go. Mine is on it's way out (charging issues) but even replacing it like for like is more expensive than when I bought the damned thing, so I am truly running this one into the ground.

I had some sort of silver grey Nokia thing with a keyboard and james bond style shoulder holster at one stage, bought for me rather than by me.

I think Nokia are now discontinued in Europe by HMD so will probably have to move to some other brand for my disposable smartphone use in the future.

What I hate the most is the fact that the software gradually becomes obsolete

humpty74 · 05/12/2024 12:20

You need to check when devices stop getting security updates. They're not safe to use online if they're not getting operating system patches anymore.

After keeping a Smart phone for 8 years, I’m more likely to wait until J break before I get a new one !

Jumell · 05/12/2024 12:22

I not J!

If you are buying budget this is one thing to look out for.

Often the budgets will only offer you 1 or 2 Android upgrades which means you are only good for a couple of years of the latest OS, but some manufacturers offer more. For example I think Samsung have typically been better historically in terms of the number of upgrades they offer on budget phones.

For me normally within 2-3 years the screen has smashed or the battery is wearing out, so replacing it for £150 to get a new OS is not a major issue.

Disturbia81 · 05/12/2024 12:23

Only when it gets slow etc which magically seems to be when upgrade time is around..
