To say that the TV Licence should be abolished?

When I look at what I watch on TV these days on the BBC, it's really only Strictly, repeats of TOTP and Glastonbury . There's nothing else that interests me. I listen to Trevor Nelson on R2, but that's it. I watch Netflix, Amazon much more and some shows on ITV, C4 or Sky Arts. And a lot of interviews on YouTube and podcasts. I also object to how the BBC posits itself as the voice of truth and neutrality, but it really isn't these days, on so many issues.

Why are we forced to pay for a service that has had its day and is no longer fit for service?

The worst part is that around 50000 people are prosecuted every year for not paying - criminal record for watching the tv!

Imagine Netflix being able to give you a criminal record…. It’s totally ridiculous and frankly disgusting

Yeah, that isn't what you said at all.

Sorry I wasn't there to walk you through...

"It's disgusting that you have to pay the BBC just for owning a device capable of receiving its broadcasts, whether you watch them or not"

...to enable you to work out that I was referring to watching live tv on that device.

ArtfulBee · 05/12/2024 23:51

Just admit that you got it wrong. You made the common mistake of thinking you need to pay for a TV license if you have a device capable of receiving live broadcasts. It's okay to admit you got something wrong but now you're embarrassing yourself.

Sorry I wasn't there to walk you through...

That's because it's not what you said.

And even the link you posted said "Many wrongly believe you need to be covered by a TV licence if you have the ability to watch 'live' television, even if you don't watch it."

So yes, the mistake you made - which you are for some reason too embarrassed and too dishonest you admit you made - is a common one. It was, accordingly, very reasonable for people to think you meant the words you used, rather than different words that you didn't use.

Honestly, cringing so hard for you.

Shame that hand you're so intent on overplaying isn't a better one.

"It's disgusting that you have to pay the BBC just for owning a device capable of receiving its broadcasts, whether you watch them (the BBC's broadcasts) or not"

Didn't think it was that challenging to decipher, but there you go.

When you said Notmoog was "Wrong" here...did you mean to write "Correct"?

Because you now seem to be saying that you agreed with them all along?

In addition to funding programmes and services, a proportion of the licence fee funds the BBC World Service broadcasting in 42 languages including English globally, as well as funding the Welsh Language TV channel S4C

So it's the responsibility of the person being harassed to change their behaviour rather than the organisation doing the harassment? Sounds a bit victim blamey.

Gosh, it does sound kinda victim blamey doesn't it. I mean what are organisations thinking by asking you to pay for services? Did you know that you can go to prison for tax evasion?!

hazelnutvanillalatte · 06/12/2024 03:53

I agree. They are biased and people should not have to pay them.

I don’t think k £175 a year for wall to wall drag queen coverage and men on women’s hour talking about how tough it is to be a lady is a good deal TBH.

Wall to wall drag queen coverage? Ok then.

Which way do you think they are biased towards?

It’s a service that if you use you have to pay for, the council tax people or gas/electric get pretty upset if you don’t pay the bill as well.

But if you don’t use the TV services that are chargeable you don’t need to pay it, it’s not complicated.

Tell us how you can watch live ITV and Chanel 4 without it…

Princessbananahamock · 06/12/2024 07:04

I cancelled mine months ago last time I watched live tv was the coronation. We hadn’t used iplayer for months either. Guess what we get the email oops looks like you’ve been watching iplayer. Nope so I deleted the account, following month another email about watching iplayer, this one saying about sending people out! Seriously what scammers. I agree with a subscription fee like Netflix or prime etc.

The BBC don’t decide that, it’s part of the charter that the government decides which will be renewed in 2027. There’s a public consultation about it next year, have your say.

Watching live ITV and channel 4 is included in the category of TV services that are chargeable. The terrestrial channels share some infrastructure with the bbc and channel4 is publicly owned. They are not free to view for anyone who wants them, they are specifically made available on the condition that you must have a tv licence in order to watch them.

CandyLeBonBon · 04/12/2024 19:46

I'd like to stop. Do you just delete bbc/iplayer off your programmes/apps? I hardly watch bbc let alone any other terrestrial tv these days and frankly I've had enough of the bbc bullshit!

Yea but also go on the website and declare it.

You are also not allowed to watch any live tv at all.

Well yeah it’s pretty obvious to delete your iPlayer account if you’ve cancelled it. Let them send someone out, if you’re not using it what can they do?

SapphireOpal · 06/12/2024 07:13

taxguru · 04/12/2024 19:33

We've decided not to renew next year when it expires. We started thinking about it and barely ever watch anything live and barely ever watch anything on BBC iPlayer. We could easily give up both and just watch streaming programs on all the other channels or stuff we've recorded from other channels - it's what we're usually watching anyway. We really wouldn't miss the VERY few occasions we watch anything live or produced by the BBC.

You wouldn't technically be allowed to record things off other channels without a TV licence.

Can you point out where I am "wrong" ( genuinely please as i assumed I knew all of this)

NotTerfNorCis · 06/12/2024 07:52

Mixed feelings. I'd ordinarily have said no. But recently I've seen how the BBC threatened a vulnerable old couple because the alcoholic husband forgot to pay the licence fee. Now they're having to pay it in installments which works out at twice the usual cost. AFAIK they don't watch the BBC.
