To think what this man did was kind ( trigger warning ⚠️)

This Morning I walked past seagulls attacking a pigeon:(
A man suddenly called out and picked the pigeon up. It was barely alive He then broke the pigeons neck on the wall. It was horrible and I can't believe he could do that but it was in pain and would have suffered a slow and painful death. His actions while horrible but kind ? Can't stop thinking about it

He did the right thing. I'm sorry it upset you x

Icanttakethisanymore · 02/12/2024 10:48

Gosh, that was unexpected. I agree though - most people (me included) would have just walked past. He was brave to do the right thing.

lifeisforlaying · 02/12/2024 10:48

I couldn't have killed the pigeon but if it was badly injured then what he did really was the kindest thing. I would feel worse thinking that the pigeon would be suffering or killed by these seagulls. Try and reframe this in your mind, that he did a necessary act to prevent further suffering.

ManHereSorry · 02/12/2024 10:49

Now the seagulls are hungry

mumoftwo1981 · 02/12/2024 10:49

Oh gosh, I'd have been really upset seeing that. But he did do a very kind thing :(

VeryCheesyChips · 02/12/2024 10:50

I’d have dispatched it also. Not pleasant to see but also not pleasant to watch it suffer either.

neverthmore · 02/12/2024 10:51

ManHereSorry · 02/12/2024 10:49

Now the seagulls are hungry

Unless the man took it home with him, they'd have still eaten the carcass.

Comedycook · 02/12/2024 10:52

I don't think he should have done anything. It's nature....it's often quite horrible

Yalta · 02/12/2024 10:53

I don’t think that was kind at all. Picking the pigeon up and taking it away from the situation might have helped but actually doing what the seagulls were doing, what makes that kind.

Rescued a pigeon from being attack by a few bigger birds in a car park in the summer. Held it in my lap whilst sitting in my car with the door open till it recovered enough to be put down on the ground and then after a few hops it flew away

Was also told to wring its neck as that was the kindest thing to do

Just because a bird has been attacked doesn’t mean it is going to die.

DramaAlpaca · 02/12/2024 11:10

It was the right thing to do. I don't think I could have done it myself, but I know my DH wouldn't have hesitated to dispatch it quickly and painlessly.

Plastictrees · 02/12/2024 11:13

That’s awful. He did the right thing but it would have been shocking and upsetting to see.

I hate seagulls!

bluebalou · 02/12/2024 11:13

Oooh if it definitely couldn't have survived and flew away after a rest and was in a bad way then yes , but poor pigeon :(

EvilsElsasPetSnowman · 02/12/2024 11:16

Ummmm… I don’t know what to say

TBH I’m a bit wary of people who can do this without a second thought. You know what they say about psychopaths

Sia8899 · 02/12/2024 11:17

It must’ve been distressing for people to see that, he probably could’ve done it somewhere not in front of other people. But yes it was the kindest thing if it was really badly injured. I’ve had to dispatch a couple of mice knowing it was the kindest thing, but it wasn’t easy (definitely couldn’t have whacked them against a wall)

Scottishdreams1991 · 02/12/2024 11:19

The pigeon was definitely badly injured
it would've died anyway.

He did the right thing. Upsetting, but less so than leaving it for the seagulls to finish off.

If preventing an animal that will otherwise have a lingering painful death from suffering makes you a psychopath, then include me. I've done it for a bird (once) didn't seek it out, really hated it but would have felt worse about not doing it.

Ginkypig · 02/12/2024 11:22

I have had to do that on two separate occasions after local (not my) cats had attacked. On both occasions it was a wood pigeon and both times were horrendously injured but not quite dead.

I won’t describe the injures but they were significant and the birds were most definitely were suffering immensely and would not have survived even to get them to a vet to be put down.

it’s not something I am happy to have had to do it but both these creatures deserved for their suffering to end.

on another occasion I called rspca for a pigeon with a broken beak, sadly they told me it would also probably have to be put down as the beak likely can’t be fixed or survive without a working beak but at least this time It was well enough that I could keep it safe until a professional could come to pick it up.

I hope I’m not going to get awful comments about this because I hated every second of it but I felt I had to put the dignity of the animal before my own emotions.

FoxCrumble · 02/12/2024 11:23

Grim, but definitely the right thing if it faced a lingering and painful death.

As for the comment above about psychopaths - some people just aren’t squeamish about this stuff. They’re also used to being around animals and the realities of that.

Plastictrees · 02/12/2024 11:25

There is a link with psychopathy and deliberately hurting animals as children. Putting a pigeon out of its misery certainly wouldn’t count! 😂

TheThreeCheesesOfTheApocalypse44 · 02/12/2024 11:26

I remember seeing a sparrowhawk eating a pigeon alive, the poor thing was lying there ripped apart being eaten. I really regret not stamping on it and being a coward. He did the right thing, yes, it's nature. But let's face it we all die and we'd all rather it was quick and painless.

Or just experienced with animals....

oakleaffy · 02/12/2024 11:30

@Scottishdreams1991 A friend and I did the same thing to a pigeon.
It was being attacked by two magpies.

Under the pigeon's wing was a dreadful ''stab'' wound that went deep into the poor pigeon's chest, from the beaks of the magpies.
Between us we dispatched the pigeon swiftly and painlessly.
No way could the poor thing have survived the deep wound.

They go for under the wings of pigeons.

BobbyBiscuits · 02/12/2024 11:32

Who picks up a disease addled wild animal and smashes it head off on a wall?! If someone in London did that people would think they were clinically insane! Just for the hygeine side of it alone. I guess I'd call the RSPCA but they probably don't care about pigeons.
I guess maybe it was the right thing to do but I can't imagine wanting to see it.
Seagulls are so gross. There was a dead pigeon on the road the other day, flattened, and this seagull was dragging the carcass around and eating it. I swear they never used to be that vicious or disgusting.

There's a difference though between people who do this because they want to end the suffering and people who do it because they enjoy the suffering - and maybe draw it out.
