To think what this man did was kind ( trigger warning ⚠️)

This Morning I walked past seagulls attacking a pigeon:(
A man suddenly called out and picked the pigeon up. It was barely alive He then broke the pigeons neck on the wall. It was horrible and I can't believe he could do that but it was in pain and would have suffered a slow and painful death. His actions while horrible but kind ? Can't stop thinking about it

Hmm so only psychopaths work in abbotoirs? And maybe my nan was one. She wasn't past wringing a chickens neck and then plucking and cooking it

I used to live in a village where it would be quite common to come home to a dead bird or rabbit hung on your door. Clean it, prep it, dinner for everyone. Sometimes it was vegetables too, tbf.

For clarity, we weren't eating seagull leftovers. As far as I know...

It's worth checking that they're actually dying and not just stunned before doing this to birds (not sure about other animals). I watched a young seagull get hit by a car so I got out and trapped it. I took it to a vet and they called me the next day to say it was fine, just in shock, and asked if I wanted to release it myself. Also, birds can recover from things like broken wings if you take them to a vet or contact a wildlife rescue.

Yes absolutely
There was an owl lying by the side of a road, all l could see was loads of feathers.I had a blanket on me, which was handy.Gently got him up, wrapped him/her in the blanket, took him to my vets, they as you said @kitteninabasket contacted a wildlife rescue, they looked after the owl until the rescue people got there.Apparently he was just very dehydrated under nourished, wings were fine.He made a full recovery.Would say if anyone is in doubt not sure what to do regarding an injured bird any animal a local vets are brilliant, It’s sad, if the animal has to be euthanised at least though it will be in a peaceful way.

A very lucky owl to have you driving by! I was once driving very slowly along a country lane at night when a barn owl suddenly appeared and landed on a post just a metre from my car. It was a majestic sight. It's difficult to appreciate how massive their wings are until you see them up close.

Oh gosh, sorry you had to witness that. It would have upset me too,but I totally understand why the man did it. I know I wouldn't have been able to.

I have a bird story.

I was walking along a busy road and heard a bang. A Coot was on its back in the road waving its legs after being hit by a car.

I stopped the traffic and rescued it. It was unconscious so I put it inside my coat and took it home. I sat on the sofa for a while with it in my coat and it woke up.

I examined it but it only seemed to have an injury to its beak. I put it in a box and went to bed.

In the morning it was gone. I looked all over for it and eventually found it and put it back into the box. I went to my local park near a lake and opened the box and it flew off.

That's a stunned bird not one with obvious breaks or ripped to shreds

That's life! Sometimes we have to be cruel to be kind.
He Maybe would have been kinder to you to be a bit more discreet about it.

Why she's an adult

Poor pigeons, they really do get bullied! I never realised. I also feel especially sorry for them as I read an article recently which explained how we part domesticated them and then when they fell out of favour, we vilified them as vermin. Poor things just want to be around us and we want to get rid of them.

This explains further

Ummmm… I don’t know what to say

TBH I’m a bit wary of people who can do this without a second thought. You know what they say about psychopaths

How do you know he did it without a second thought?

Yes, that’s such a good way to describe them majestic, they really are. Also to see their eyes close up, they’re huge.I haven’t seen an owls wings completely opened, in real life, can imagine they’re a sight to behold.
Your comment was such a good one, to check, to see if they’re actually dying first, not just stunned, as they can be resilient.

I don't think anyone is advocating going round necking slightly iffy looking birds.

Freeyourminds · 02/12/2024 20:05

Some people including yourself have shared rescue stories, which is relevant, some birds can be saved. In some situations, when a bird is dying, then to end its suffering is the humane thing to do, obviously no one on this thread has advocated necking iffy looking birds, strange comment @LigamentBandy

LigamentBandy · 02/12/2024 20:07

@Freeyourminds it was light-hearted having reread the thread , clearly I misread the "room"
No offence meant at all
