To think outdoor Christmas lights shouldn't come with flash mode?

My neighbours have put their lights up and put them on some sort of strobe mode or something. It won't go off until about 12 if we're lucky based on last year. Aibu to say outdoor lights shouldn't be made with a flash mode?

I was in bed the other night, around midnight, and I saw blue and red flashing, thinking it was emergency services I poked my head through the (blackout) curtains and it was the Christmas lights over the road 🙄 would love a blackout blind against the window to keep all the light out but the cat always ruins them because she’s a nosy cow (like me 😂) and always forces herself behind them
I think someone might have mentioned it or they realised it looks like police have swarmed their house because they’re on static mode now…

Our neighbours across from us have the flashing blue ones all over the front of their house. I’m on edge all of December and into the new year, the blue flashing triggers my fight or flight nosey neighbour response because I think somethings happened, “oh oh, it’s all kicking off out there, I wonder what’s happened…….oh fuck, tricked again, it’s just their sodding Christmas lights!”

Your neighbours may be afraid to say something to you. Presumably people who are not neighbours drive or walk past your house, and they may be affected. Several commentators have asked why you like the flashing lights so much since you can't see them in the house (though maybe you don't use blinds or curtains), and I'm curious as well.

Yes probably. Flashing Christmas lights are like loud music late at night or clouds of weed smoke or screaming arguments spilling out of the house....strong indicators that the occupants are anti social twats of the highest order who may well deck you if you asked politely for them to stop

I would love a ban on flashing lights both indoor and out, multi coloured lights, blue lights...in fact any lights that are not white or even better warm white.

Ditto glittery tat that people put on their giant fake trees.

What's wrong with a 5ft real tree, a little string of warm white lights, a few handmade paper decorations, some orange slices and ribbons?

Yes I'm a Tree Snob. Come at me 😂

Tacky and awful. And also totally pointless because if you are inside your house you can't see the dreadful flashing, you are just supplying an unwanted display to your neighbours.

LOOK AT ME!!! I'M SO CHRISTMASSY!!!

No, you're an antisocial twat.

My mum spoke to her neighbours about their flashing lights as she is prone to migraines. Fortunately they were reasonable and turned the flashing off.

But if you have arseholes for neighbours...or people who claim they can't change them...

Your tree sounds shite to me (orange slices?) ....but if it's inside your own house not affecting me what do.i care?

Btw si e of us are allergic to real trees

I hate Flash mode in or out. Epileptic here so it's genuinely a real issue, not just a preference. They make me feel really unwell.

taxguru · 03/12/2024 11:08

I fail to see why any person would need to be told/asked to turn off their flashing lights. Isn't it common sense that they may cause a nuisance to other people.

I put it on a par with all night parties, early Sunday morning building work, excessively revving up cars/motorbikes, etc. Just ignorant attention seeking tossers who don't care about anyone else but themselves.

The kind who'd probably punch you if you respectfully asked them to turn them off or be quieter etc.

Stretchedresources · 03/12/2024 14:03

A lot of people are thick and arrogant though. And potentially violent. I'm not going to tell our drug dealers family to turn off their tacky flashing lights as I'll get a brick through my window.
