To think outdoor Christmas lights shouldn't come with flash mode?

My neighbours have put their lights up and put them on some sort of strobe mode or something. It won't go off until about 12 if we're lucky based on last year. Aibu to say outdoor lights shouldn't be made with a flash mode?

Outdoor christmas lights should be illegal!

I have flashing lights but now I'm going to change them to not flash as I didn't even consider how annoying they could be for my neighbours. My kids love them but I don't want to piss anyone off or induce migraines.

Thats wonderful! 🤩 you’re neighbours will be thrilled 🙏💕

DoublePeonies · 02/12/2024 07:01

Yep, adding my name to the petition to stop flashing light, blue lights, and - my total bugbear - trucks who put blue lights round the cab.

@verycloakanddaggers not a chance....

noctilucentcloud · 01/12/2024 23:03

They're pretty horrible when you have dizziness issues too. I'd love to ban them!

Do you have flicker vertigo?
I do, and have to avoid parts of shops at this time of year.

whatdoyouthink123456 · 02/12/2024 07:12

@Imonlyhereforthebuffet

Bit steep to call someone a cunt because you don't like flashy lights. There obviously is a market for them or they wouldn't sell them 🤷🏻‍♀️ obviously lots of people do like them

I have lots of neighbours, I don't know if they like them or not

bettbburg · 02/12/2024 07:13

Our neighbours have flashing red and blue ones, very annoying when seen through the glass front door.

whatdoyouthink123456 · 02/12/2024 07:16

@sunsettosunrise
If a neighbour told me they had epilepsy then I would turn them to a different setting.
But if it's just a preference, then I wouldn't really care. Lots of my neighbours do things I don't like, but if you live near lots of people you can't control how they live

I don't think so. It's super county to put something so anti social on your house.

If a person is ok with giving people seizures and migraines because they think their flashy light are nice, they're a cunt.

Zippidydoodah · 02/12/2024 07:21

They trigger migraines in me. I am lucky that none of my neighbours use insanely flashing lights but if they did, I’d probably say something.

GrumpyCactus · 02/12/2024 07:23

I don't understand the I like them so I'll pur them up argument. If you like them that much surely you would put them inside your house where you can actually see them. Why put them outside where you can't see them but all your neighbours who probably don't like them can see them?

XWKD · 02/12/2024 07:26

If you can't talk to the neighbours, have you considered using a scissors (on the lights!). 🤣

I am wondering the same thing. My neighbour with the flashing lights till 2 am has all his curtains shut in the evenings leading me to believe that he puts the lights up for my benefit.

daffodilandtulip · 02/12/2024 07:51

Our neighbour has them all year round too, then extra for Christmas. It lights the whole house up, flashing, hanging colour. Drives me mad.
Also hate the blue ones that flash, forever making me panic and think I need to pull over for an emergency vehicle when I'm driving.

TiramisuThief · 02/12/2024 09:30

DetestTheClockChange · 02/12/2024 06:09

@TiramisuThief - was going to say the same re the blue ones, for 3 weeks each year I'm convinced the police are pulling up outside!

It drives me mad.

How do they not notice?!

pimplebum · 02/12/2024 09:33

Take over some mince pies / bottle of wine and ask nicely for the flashing mode to be switched if or off at least off at your bedtime time they may not be nice people but you never know if you don’t ask you don’t get

curtains over the blinds

GasPanic · 02/12/2024 09:43

Someone near me has obliterated half the front of their house covering the windows with a giant inflatable Bart Simpson. I am not exagertating. The other half they have added a snowflake projector.

I just can't figure out why someone would think this is a good idea. I am hoping the local thuggery take it out.

Dontcallmescarface · 02/12/2024 10:10

whatdoyouthink123456 · 01/12/2024 23:24

I love my flashy Christmas lights 🤩 I'm guessing by all the disgruntled neighbours on here, I'm not the only one 🤣

Do you sit with the curtains/blinds open all night so you can see them, if not then what's the point of having them?

Butteredtoast55 · 02/12/2024 10:14

LadyChilli · 01/12/2024 20:12

OMG this! Steady on lights is always the last option of the huge number of choices you have to cycle through as well. I only want normal lights and they are so hard to find now.

I totally agree. Static should be the default mode. Flashing lights are awful and the 'cycling through' mode is the absolute worst.

taxguru · 02/12/2024 10:18

Tomatina · 01/12/2024 20:01

Yes ban these bloody things. They trigger migraines and epilepsy in several people I know, and even for those without medical issues they are just extremely unpleasant. Who in their right mind would want them?

Well they're just attention seekers. After all, when they're in their own house, they can't see them, so they're obviously for the "benefit" of other people!! We've a demented neighbour opposite who puts them up every year, and leaves them switched on 24-7 - what's even more demented is that she's barely ever there - she's away 4/5 nights per week and just leaves them on. She's no children at home either, so it's not as if she does it for her children's sake. She's just a demented attention seeker (in others ways too!). One day I'll go over with some wire cutters!

user2848502016 · 02/12/2024 10:34

I hate flashing lights!
I would happily ban all flashing outdoor lights and music and those moving projector things!
Call me a grinch, I don't care but I would be so annoyed if I lived next door to a "Christmas house" 😂

JusteanBiscuits · 02/12/2024 10:54

100% with you on this. Due to a TBI my brain can't cope with the flashing and I struggle to walk past them. Neighbours opposite did change theirs when requested last year as I work from home, and they were constantly at the edge of my eyesight.

noctilucentcloud · 02/12/2024 11:52

Notmanyleftnow · 02/12/2024 07:12

I've never heard of that. I have chronic dizziness (labrynthitis that permanently destroyed balance function in one inner ear) but am super sensitive to flashing or flickering lights. Things like some fluorescent strip lighting, old style computer monitors (before they became flat screens) and flashing/flickering lights make me feel awful within seconds. I also struggle with things like driving past sunlight through trees or railings where it creates flickering. There's a few shops I can't go in because of old flickering fluorescent tube lights. But I'd definitely avoid ships with flashing christmas lights too.

StarCurator · 02/12/2024 13:11

Your neighbours may be afraid to say something to you. Presumably people who are not neighbours drive or walk past your house, and they may be affected. Several commentators have asked why you like the flashing lights so much since you can't see them in the house (though maybe you don't use blinds or curtains), and I'm curious as well.
