To not understand how it’s only TODAY that I’ve ever watched Love Actually

And it was bloody lovely!

I genuinely don’t know how I’ve never seen this despite being 51. In my defence I’m not much of a film lover by DD had heard about it and decided to put it on.

So many big names in it, it was fab.

My heart actually broke for Emma Thompsons character though, what a shit of a man. Wonder if he did sleep with that woman.

I always say 'just in cases' now.

Me too! I just watched it actually, there are so many funny bits and so many cringey bits, some of the dialogue is awful but there are some great actors in it and it's very Christmasy so it's popular in our house.

RafaistheKingofClay · 01/12/2024 23:42

The thing is I know it’s problematic and misogynistic but for 2hrs I just don’t care. Which probably makes me hugely hypocritical but it’s a nice Christmas film and I like it.

IcedPurple · 01/12/2024 19:40

Emma Thompson and Alan Rickman were the only good thing about that dire film.

But like all of the storylines, it's just a series of misogynistic cliches. Why couldn't Rickman have been the one sobbing about how his wife might be having an affair with an attractive colleague?

Colin Firth seemed fairly upset by his wife shagging his brother.

I saw The Holiday for the first time tonight when it was on TV - it was so saccharine-sweet it made my teeth itch. It’s not one I’ll be rushing to watch again anytime soon, that’s for sure. I’d much rather have Love Actually, I don’t care how problematic others might judge it to be.

Wonder if he did sleep with that woman.

Emma Freud confirmed a few years back that he did, I'm afraid. She's wearing The Necklace when Hugh Grant is travelling through Wandsworth, which I think we were meant to take as confirmation.

There's another clue too. You see Mia the tramp with the bad fringe of evil-ness in her bedroom earlier on, with a neatly made bed. And then the next time it's her putting the necklace on and admiring it in the mirror. And the bedsheets in the background are unmade and crumpled. Dirty Harry has been round with her present to get some leg over, crumpled the bedsheets and then gone home to Emma Thompson for their family time.

That fringe has a lot to answer for. It's 21 years ago and I still shudder and take an instant dislike to anyone with that fringe.

birdiesings · 02/12/2024 00:03

Talking about smug travesties, The Holiday is absolutely horrific, I just don't see the appeal of it at all.

At least Love Actually has some jokes in it.

Stretchedresources · 02/12/2024 00:05

I'm 50 and never watched it. I got the impression it was a bit crap.

Ah I had no idea it was hated on here. I loved it 🙈

Read this. I can’t be bothered to explain why it’s a shower of lazy, misogynistic cliche.

Indeed. It made me cringe.

100% smug. So cringe.

And Hugh Grant's crab dad dancing to The Pointer Sisters knocks his arrest for kerb crawling into his second most embarrassing moment before a camera

DiscoBeat · 02/12/2024 00:16

I love it! And The Holiday (which I always watch whilst wrapping)

Nottodaygoaway · 02/12/2024 04:58

I saw it in the cinema when it came out. I didn't like any of the stories in it and found all the characters to be quite dull. I didn't like the PM and tea lady plot because at the time it came out my mum was harassing me over my weight and I felt sorry for Martine in a big way. Richard Curtis has since said he got it wrong but I won't watch it again for that reason.

CrazyAndSagittarius · 02/12/2024 05:05

I love it too. Watch it every Christmas!

SharpOpalNewt · 02/12/2024 05:06

I only watched it once at the cinema when it came out and have never watched it again.

username358 · 02/12/2024 05:08

Bloody awful film. Not as bad as The Holiday or Pretty Woman. Some of these romantic comedies are absolute bilge.

TheaBrandt · 02/12/2024 05:13

Yes I know it gets slagged off but has such positive vibes for me as I saw it at cinema when it came out in 2003 with a new boyfriend who ended up being Dh. So I was actually living for real the being young and gorgeous in London at Christmas and meeting the love of your life!

NOTANUM · 02/12/2024 05:16

It legitimises stalking but apart from that.. I enjoyed it at the time though!

SnoopySantaPaws · 02/12/2024 05:28

@Careergoals

i enjoyed your enthusiastic OP, but knowing how many on here hate it, I knew you'd get told why you should enjoy it 🙄🙄🙄

I watched it at the cinema when it came out, with the first bloke I went out with seriously after splitting from who was the love of my life. The date was great, the film was just what we needed. Aside from that, I love the film & watch it a couple of times a year.

the Holiday is 'ok' but for me I watched it once, no desire to do so again!!

im going to look out the family stone!!

@UnrelatedTo Thanks for the link. That was a good read 😁

piscofrisco · 02/12/2024 06:14

Well I love it. What else haven't you seen op? The Holiday should be next on your list if you haven't see it and enjoyed Love Actually.

The best Xmas film is Muppet Christmas Carol. The end.

Fact!

I make my family watch this every Christmas. They pretend to like it for my sake. The one time I watched Love Actually was at a friend's house and I didn't drive there so was stuck watching it. Longest two hours of my life.

Hobbesmanc · 02/12/2024 06:42

We watched the holdovers last night as our first Christmas movie and loved it.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 02/12/2024 06:59

I'm indifferent to it, is that allowed here? I can't see why people get upset over it, if you don't like it that's ok. No need to get angry!

SantaToSSD · 02/12/2024 07:05

Tooty78 · 01/12/2024 19:37

I love Love Actually, (but I still haven't seen The Holiday)

Don't rush to watch it. Love Actually at least has some humour to it. The Holiday is soooooo implausible.
