To not understand how it’s only TODAY that I’ve ever watched Love Actually

And it was bloody lovely!

I genuinely don’t know how I’ve never seen this despite being 51. In my defence I’m not much of a film lover by DD had heard about it and decided to put it on.

So many big names in it, it was fab.

My heart actually broke for Emma Thompsons character though, what a shit of a man. Wonder if he did sleep with that woman.

Has anyone seen The Family Stone?

I didn't expect much from it but I think it's a great Xmas movie.

Merrymess · 01/12/2024 20:33

I love it. I'm not a film snob though.

NoNoNona · 01/12/2024 20:34

Well I may be going against the grain here, but I was rolling around on the floor with laughter at Hugh Grant doing his "dance" to Jump - luckily watching alone in the privacy of my own (mortgage paid off) house. Still makes me laugh.
And the line about being first Lobster in the nativity play reminds me of being in church one Christmas morning, where the Sunday School was asked about the difference between the nativity scene at the entrance to the church and the one on the altar steps. A voice piped up "what about the camels".

squirming with boredom and distaste bordering on disgust the whole time

Its just a film!

Exactly. Talk about shades of the Sistine Chapel.

FoxtonFoxton · 01/12/2024 20:38

I know it's hated on MN -and I have to agree. It's not aged well. I always think it's a film full of really detestable people that never get the ending they really deserve. Everyone likes different things though, I'm more of a sci-fi/horror person.

Yeah, and? I wasn't able to turn it off, which I would have if I'd been at home. I don't like being presented with misogyny as entertainment. Would you say "it's just a film" if you were made to sit through something you loathed?

Catsmere · 01/12/2024 20:43

Bullshit. My silent reaction to a film I found obnoxious is hardly screaming in the Sistine Chapel.

I love Love Actually, (but I still haven't seen The Holiday)

I love Love Actually too. But give The Holiday a serve. It’s awful IMO.

Speckyfourfries · 01/12/2024 20:45

I love that film

Probably.

Papyrophile · 01/12/2024 20:46

It makes me laugh out loud every time I see it. Bill Nighy's comedy genius moment.

I'm currently watching it for the first time. I'm a bit on the fence with it, although the English cottage location is just beautiful.

Papyrophile · 01/12/2024 20:50

Apparently @HurdyGurdy19 the cottage is a complete cinematic fake. Filmed in LA. The facade is just a picture. There was an article in the Times about it a few days ago.

GinToBegin · 01/12/2024 20:50

Isn’t it Love, Actually where the perfectly healthy-sized Martine McCutcheon Is referred to as fat/chubby/whatever? And Andrew Lincoln’s stalker behaviour somehow being unbearably cute? Fuck that.

I absolutely loathe Love, Actually. I find it insufferably smug, white, straight and middle-class. I can see why people enjoy it, but it’s not for me. I’ll stick to Muppet Christmas Carol and all the Netflix festive crap.

OverthinkingOlive · 01/12/2024 19:36

Everyone on here hates it, I like it though. Where the fuck's my fucking coat? 😃

This part of Christmas for me and dc.

Papyrophile · 01/12/2024 20:53

You do you. I am white, and probably insufferably middle class, but obviously not racist, and I still think it has charm and a feel good winsomeness.

Merrymess · 01/12/2024 20:54

I always say 'just in cases' now.

Oh noooooo. I thought it was just so very English. Dammit Hollywood!

It’s a very good looking film - I want Jude Laws house!

Pile of sentimental pants isn’t it?

It's brilliant

DarkAndTwisties · 01/12/2024 20:57

I don't understand the strong feelings (in either direction) this film elicits. "Squirming with disgust"?? I think if it wasn't a Christmas film, and so didn't have an element of watching it every year as a habit, it wouldn't be as popular or rewatched as much.

I like the "there was more than one lobster at the birth of Jesus" bit though. And Bill Nighy singing at the start, with his sweary rant.

SomethingFun · 01/12/2024 20:59

It’s awful and the holiday is awful too, but not as awful as Love Actually as it only fits in 4 cliched cringey characters instead of a full ensemble cast of one note stereotypes. I like those cheesy romantic hallmark movies because they know what they are, Love Actually thinks it’s cinema and it’s not, it’s shite.

Dweetfidilove · 01/12/2024 21:00

I love it too. Will be watching soon...

I'm also a Die Hard fan, so will use @Chuzzle advice this year 😅😅
