What's is with drinking and people?

Always drink posts on here.
Currently 2 posts about mums drinking at school pick up time or similar. Shall I judge a mum that smells of drink?
The other day on here did you watch the programme about binge drinking?

Out of the hundreds of channels we have got and all the entertainment why would I watch that?
Númerous other posts about people drinking too much?
It's horrible. Why do people want to keep drinking and running there's and others people's lives? Get a life that dosent involve 🙄keep getting pissed.

Nobody says did you see David Attenborough a lovely programme about nature or something similar?
Just did anyone watch binge drinking wonderful not.

OP posts:
FanofLeaves · 01/12/2024 14:18

Sorry but it honestly sounds like you’ve had a couple yourself reading that 🤣

ApolloandDaphne · 01/12/2024 14:20

Some people drink to excess and cause issues but many just enjoy a social drink and never have any issues. If you choose not to drink that is fine. I assume no-one is forcing you to?

Okaaaaay then.

HowardTJMoon · 01/12/2024 14:21

Out of the hundreds of threads over the last week, maybe three have been as you describe. Why do those threads stand out to you?

grumpypedestrian · 01/12/2024 14:21

Your post is a bit all over the place. Agree, not the most sober post I’ve read.

AutumnalBaker · 01/12/2024 14:21

Definitely a drunk post. 🫢

You think that a binge drinking programme is the only tv programme people talk about? Confused Besides, it seems a bit odd to on the one hand criticise people for having a drinking lifestyle and on the other hand criticise people for watching a documentary raising awareness of the problem, which might encourage them to stop!

ScottBakula · 01/12/2024 14:28

So you think nobody should drink , or just nobody should talk about drinking ?

I did watch David Attenboroughs Wild Isle , it's about the UK coastline ( I think that's what it was called) on bbc iplayer last week , I was very good I highly recommend it

UmbrellaEllaEllaElla · 01/12/2024 14:29

Because a lot of people drink to excess in ways that harm their mental and physical health and their relationships with others.

BunnyLake · 01/12/2024 14:29

You do sound like you’ve had one too many. I can’t work out, are you for or against drinking?

SleepToad · 01/12/2024 14:31

Scientists seem to need a target, I suppose to attract funding, in the past it's been salt, cholesterol in eggs, fats, trans fats, smoking, sugar, beef, etc etc etc. The media pick up on this, then the politicians, especially the ones who believe in a nanny state/need to be seen doing "stuff" for votes. Hence why the eu has made it law that drinks bottles should have attached lids....we have it because manufacturing isn't going to have two set ups.

So drink in all its guises is once again evil....remember the usa banned alcohol in 1920, which went so well that drink consumption actually increased as did crime, the mafia especially thrived.

People like me who enjoy a social drink, occasionally get drunk, don't drink and drive, dont commit crime, don't start fights are penalised for the actions of others...but given that apart from violent crime, most crime is either drug related or fraud related to organised crime, drink isn't a huge problem.

Yes parts of the nhs are effected by drink related health issues, especially in Scotland (it seems) but obesity is a much bigger issue and there doesn't seen to be the concentrated campaign against chips like there is drink.

Stigma against people who drink is growing, especially in the younger generation, but they are the generation who seem to me much more likely to die of a pizza and burger induced heart attack at 40 than any of the drinkers I know (all of whom are well over 40 and have been pissing it up for years)

It may be because they grew up with so called social drinker parents who were just awful. My own dad's drinking put me off alcohol, or at least I see it very differently and as quite threatening. The sound of his beer glass hitting the table still makes me cringe.

ilovesooty · 01/12/2024 14:39

Why would it be strange for people to watch the programme about binge drinking?

Ponderingwindow · 01/12/2024 14:43

People talk about drinking because those of us who have survived living with alcoholics have trauma that we will never truly recover from. when we see other people still in that situation, we want to help get them free.

as a society, we should be talking about excessive drinking. It is a scourge that destroys lives.

I am not anti-alcohol. I had a nice glass of wine yesterday. There is a line though and when people cross it they can destroy their relationships and even actively hurt people.

mamajong · 01/12/2024 14:45

I enjoy a drink and it doesn't ruin my life. Not everyone drinks to excess! If you don't like a post scroll on past

Wendysfriend · 01/12/2024 14:47

You could have a few drinks while watching your animal programmes 🍷🍸🍹🍺🍻🍾🥃

pictoosh · 01/12/2024 14:51

Your post is unclear as to whether you think people drink too much or whether you think people need to mind their own business regarding others' drinking.

MN has a lot of anti-drinkers - casual/social drinking gets a very bad press on here. There's plenty of hyperbole trotted out in honour of it.

MMOC · 01/12/2024 14:53

Because people like drinking. It's a very British working class thing.
Im sure you are not ‘like’ these school mums but don’t be so judgy.
Not everyone has to be like you. Not everyone can be like you.
Unfortunately life is not fair or easy for some.

mindutopia · 01/12/2024 14:58

I don’t think there’s much discussion about drinking on MN actually. Certainly not nearly as much as about parking and MILs.

But the reason I think people do get a little bit obsessed with drinking is because they have some discomfort about their own drinking and this is how it bubbles up. I’m sober now, but definitely when I was drinking (and quietly ruminating on how problematic or not my drinking was) I talked a lot about drinking, I watched documentaries about it, I would have clicked on a thread on MN to talk about how normal it is to have some prosecco at 10am for brunch with the girls. Most people who now admit they have drinking problems would say they had the same preoccupation. In fact, when people hear I don’t drink anymore, all they want to talk to me about is their drinking habits and how they are sure they’re all very moderate at 1-2 glasses of wine a day (but sometimes more).

Often it’s just anxiety about something that’s taking up a lot of space in their heads.

Imanalcoholic · 01/12/2024 14:59

Alcoholism is an illness.
It's a disease.
It's commonly connected to CPTSD, so for example being severely neglected as a child, being brought up in extreme poverty, being sexually or violently abused as a child. Being a war veteran as an adult, having mental health problems like bipolar or ADHD. It's a recognised disorder of self-medication. Alcohol makes you feel warm, numb and dissociated. When life is too much, it's a widely available drug of choice.

But carry on being judgemental towards people who are unwell. You do you.

Hit a nerve has it?

it's like when you buy a red car, it seems like everyone has suddenly got a red car.

your post makes you sound like you need help. There's a topic on giving up alcohol.
