Conversation as it was-

A- Next time when you do the dishwasher, rinse the dishes first please. It was a mess when I opened it last time.
B- You don't need to rinse them, only scrape off pieces of food.
A- No, You always need to rinse them. As I said, it was a mess last time.

This is why we haven't got a dishwasher.

Whenever we go away, we encounter dishwashers which either don't get things clean, or are incapable of drying things.

We have yet to find a dishwasher that works efficiently.

We do all our own washing up.

Bizarre.
I have a dishwasher that is fit for purpose. The filters are cleaned several times a week though and I use quality tablets, salt and rinse aid.

Nikitaspearlearring · 28/11/2024 19:18

I don't pre-rinse and I always use the quick wash. But I do run a cleaning programme every few weeks and I clean the filter probably weekly.

kittybiscuits · 28/11/2024 19:19

In 25 years of running a dishwasher, I've never encountered dirty pots, unless there was something jamming the spray arm, ie operator error. I have literally no idea why people say things come out dirty.

Same. The failure rate from the humans in my household however, if much higher.

Donkeyfromshrek · 28/11/2024 19:21

Depends how good the dishwasher is. Our previous one you definitely needed to rinse. The one we have now is fine as long as the food is scraped off.

pimplebum · 28/11/2024 19:22

Agree with all above what’s the bloody point of a dishwasher if you’re standing there rinsing that’s what a filter is for
gritty job to clean that

Mama2many73 · 28/11/2024 19:22

Apparently if you rinse your plates, the 'pod' doesn't work correctly as it requires dirt for the cleaning chemicals to adhere to, in order to clean properly.

I remove excess food etc but I don't rinse first.

Edit for spelling.

Oreosareawful · 28/11/2024 19:24

A is wrong

honeylulu · 28/11/2024 19:37

Pre rinse! Good God talk about buy a dog and bark yourself. The dishwasher does the rinsing, the washing and the final rinsing. That is The Actual Point. My dishwasher does this just fine!

Catza · 28/11/2024 19:39

If I am rinsing, I might as well be washing. What a waste of time.

helibirdcomp · 28/11/2024 19:43

Clean the filters and run a dishwasher cleaner. No don't rinse. If very greasy cut up tablet and chuck 1/4- 1/3 in bottom of dishwasher so that there is a small amount of detergent in prewash. (or use powder)

Schoolchoicesucks · 28/11/2024 19:43

A is wrong. Dishwashers are meant to "be a mess" before the items in them are washed.

Mine works brilliantly!

recommend a miele one. it works perfectly. 💪 best dishwasher ever had. dishwashers far more economical hygienic and environmentally friendly than hand washing
op you only need to scape. even the adverts on the telly tell you no need to rinse

On a proper wash yes. On a quick rinse then no.

LightSpeeds · 28/11/2024 20:02

Well, if you're going to rinse you may as well clean the dish in the sink at the same time. What's the point of having a dishwasher if you have to have all that rinsing kerfuffle!

Alifemadelessordinary · 28/11/2024 20:11

WeeOrcadian · 28/11/2024 19:06

I scrape with a spatula - the dishwasher takes care of the rest

If you need to rinse, you need a new dishwasher

I've only recently started doing this. It's a game changer.
I bought a spare silicone spatula that lives in the dishwasher for scraping and it makes such a difference.
There's barely anything there when I clean the filters now.

IMustDoMoreExercise · 28/11/2024 20:12

NewName24 · 28/11/2024 18:45

Depends what's been on them.

Gravy / sauce / mess - makes sense to rinse them or it just dries on when sitting waiting for the dishwasher to be full

Crumbs / bits of dry food - scrape them off and don't rinse.

Pretty much the same as when I'm washing up by hand, I'd rinse gravy or sauce off before putting plate into the bowl.

I only use my dishwasher every 3 days because there are only two of us and we have porridge everyday and I never rinse anything. The dishwasher gets all the porridge remnants off with no problem. And I only use the eco setting so I'm not running it at a high temperature. It is a Bosch.

Sounds like the dishwasher is BU if it can't wash properly unless the dishes are rinsed first.

TheLyingBitchintheWardrobe · 28/11/2024 20:21

B you don't need to rinse or the dishwasher won't clean properly

Loloj · 28/11/2024 20:34

A is in wrong. Just scraping is fine. Obviously lumps of food left on plates not ok.

godmum56 · 28/11/2024 20:39

ThinWomansBrain · 28/11/2024 18:49

I often pre-rinse - but I live on my own and don't run the dishwasher every day

do you mean you use the rinse hold cycle or rinse the plates under the tap?

lazyarse123 · 28/11/2024 20:40

When we had one dh always wanted to rinse plates, if I was doing it I would just wash them otherwise you're more or less doing the job twice.
Anyway whoever wants to rinse can have the job.

teatoast8 · 28/11/2024 20:42

A

godmum56 · 28/11/2024 20:43

I have had varying brands of dishwasher since the early 90's never rinsed plates under the tap only scraped stuff into the bin. Never had a problem. Now I am on my own I do use the dishwasher rinse hold.
