Conversation as it was-

A- Next time when you do the dishwasher, rinse the dishes first please. It was a mess when I opened it last time.
B- You don't need to rinse them, only scrape off pieces of food.
A- No, You always need to rinse them. As I said, it was a mess last time.

I was B in this scenario.
Would it make a difference if the dishwasher was set to express as in a quick wash? I'm failing to see where A is coming from but felt a bit 'told off' and that I am dishwashering wrong. (This happened at work).

I often pre-rinse - but I live on my own and don't run the dishwasher every day

A says rinse

Yep, and the question was ‘who is wrong?’

ZippyLilacStork · 28/11/2024 18:50

If it’s a work dishwasher I guarantee nobody is cleaning the filters and that’s causing issues

InThePinkScarf · 28/11/2024 18:53

I was only visiting today but you are most likely right @ZippyLilacStork

Pre-rinser is in the wrong. If things are coming out dirty because they weren’t rinsed, the dishwasher needs a good clean or repair.

Elvisgotitrightaboutchristmas · 28/11/2024 18:57

Scrape only

ShamblesRock · 28/11/2024 18:59

You can't have heavily soiled plates in a quick wash, that along with a probably dirty work dishwasher and cheaper tablets will mean it will be a mess.

Our quick wash is only ever for sandwich plates, cereal bowls etc.

Icanttakethisanymore · 28/11/2024 18:59

Jostuki · 28/11/2024 18:36

Both are wrong. Dishwashers are bloody awful and everything should be washed by had.

WHAT?? dishwasher does a much better job than anyone in our house… but maybe that’s just our house! 😂

TheShellBeach · 28/11/2024 18:40

This is why we haven't got a dishwasher.

Whenever we go away, we encounter dishwashers which either don't get things clean, or are incapable of drying things.

We have yet to find a dishwasher that works efficiently.

We do all our own washing up.

We have a dishwasher that cleans stuff and dries stuff… didn’t realise it was so rare!

Nc546888 · 28/11/2024 19:04

No need to rinse. That’s silly.

also makes your dishwasher less efficient

Why?

DazedAndConfused321 · 28/11/2024 19:04

Tell A that a quick rinse doesn't work, and it needs a full cycle to clean it.

Is it your job to rinse the dishes? Is it soley your fault for the mess?

Well you are definitely wrong then.

Someone is happily putting in an extra second per plate, to stop the dishwasher getting clogged up with food, and someone just visiting their workplace starts criticising them for it ? Hmm

Even if - and this thread shows it isn't clear cut - but even if they were wrong, what business is it of yours ???

Nc546888 · 28/11/2024 19:05

Icanttakethisanymore · 28/11/2024 19:04

Why?

Lots of sources I could find on Google but here is one

amp.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2020/dec/25/how-to-properly-load-a-dishwasher-if-you-pre-rinse-it-might-actually-come-out-dirtier

WeeOrcadian · 28/11/2024 19:06

I scrape with a spatula - the dishwasher takes care of the rest

If you need to rinse, you need a new dishwasher

Yes we have to prerinse if using the quick cycle so just use a normal cycle.

dementedpixie · 28/11/2024 19:08

Scraping is fine even on a quick wash with my dishwasher. Does the dishwasher need its filters or spray arms cleaned out?

k1233 · 28/11/2024 19:09

I've got a Fisher & Paykel single drawer dishwasher and it is amazing! Nothing has come out dirty and, following the instructions, I don't pre rinse. Apparently a bit of debris helps the soap stick to the plates. I was very resistant to the do not rinse idea but it works.

The only things that have a small amount of water on them are depressions or containers that get flipped. Which is understandable.

I love walking out the door to work with the dishwasher on and the robovac cleaning the floors. Two jobs I hate doing.

Bluepenguin20 · 28/11/2024 19:09

I always prerinse. Always have done. Although I appreciate it may not technically be necessary, it's habit and just always seemed like a good idea to me.

Not just yours. I've met plenty of people whose washing up left a lot to be desired and never a dishwasher that didn't get the majority of things clean!

InThePinkScarf · 28/11/2024 19:09

Bit extreme @NewName24 .I felt I was being told off. I didn't say anything back in response to her?
Not sure why you are so angry.....

Icanttakethisanymore · 28/11/2024 19:13

Huh! Thanks, that’s fascinating!

edit to add, I hope that didn’t sound sarcastic, I’m genuinely grateful

NigelHarmansNewWife · 28/11/2024 19:13

At work I'd just ignore and carry on as you were. The people who bang on about this irrelevant stuff in work time don't have enough to do imho.

TheBeesKnee · 28/11/2024 19:14

When was the filter last cleaned? That'll probably be behind the "mess".

Dishes need to be dirty when going in so that the detergent has something to stick to to wash away.
