Is my dad right to be so obsessed with grades?

So my dad is a teacher and was keen for me to get good grades which sounds great but it was his sole focus. He sent me to a private school coz small classes and I absolutely hated it...bullied etc, didn't fit in bit he had convinced he did the right thing as I got ok grades ( not stunning btw).
Now dd has gone to the local comp and loves it , is doing well at 6th form . My dad is convinced her grades would be higher if she had gone to private school. Aibu to tell him to shut up? She has literally been doing alevels for 5 minutes since September and is doing great.
He also told dd that he wished he'd sent me to preo school....i'm bloody thrilled I didn't go and went to my normal state school first.

I opened this thread and I’m very disappointed your dad isn’t obsessed with giraffes.

Me too 😂

zeddybrek · 27/11/2024 23:31

I thought this would be about giraffes or graphs, and I'm surprised with my disappointment.

Your Dad sounds annoying.

Same. I quite like them myself.

You really don’t like your dad, why not just see less of him and then he won’t upset you so often.

What? Confused
The OP is having a bit of a vent, but it's a strange assumption/leap that she doesn't actually like her father!

Your dad has both grandpa and teacher glasses on.

Grandpa glasses - your dd is the brightest, most wonderful kid of the highest potential and teacher glasses - I got fed up of big class sizes and yearn for my dead poets moment.

Sixth form at private just isn't worth it if she's happy where she is.

Tell him to try on some giraffe or graph glasses instead!

GildedRage · 28/11/2024 00:31

i thought an engineer and an obsession with graphs.

i agree with @nodogz rose colored glasses and grandpa love.

you've often mentioned your traumatic school and parent relationship experience. i'm sorry the triggers keep popping up.

blackbird77 · 28/11/2024 00:48

I love grapes too. Could eat them all day. Natures Candy. Fair play to your dad for noticing this.

Laloca2000 · 28/11/2024 00:48

I had a very mixed up education. Been to 9 different schools up until I was 16. Schools in 4 different countries and 3 of them private schools. 1 in primary and 2 in secondary. I have nothing good to say about the private school experiences and I can honestly say I learned nothing from them. My point is simply if your child is doing well where she is, she's already winning and you're doing well. Your Dad has ideas related to his own experiences but clearly things have moved on, your child is in a good place and I would be proud of her progress and achievements. Its bloody hard being at school sometimes, so frankly Dad can STFU and embrace the fact that his clearly focused grandchild is capable and embracing the education and opportunities offered to her. More strength to her in my view. Good luck.

Nah, mate. Your brain works too fast and your fingers, or spellchecker, can't keep up. 😊😉

Your daughter has to have inherited her brains from somebody, most likely you.

I have had a similar experience- I dealt with it by never sharing my children's grades but always using a vague sentence like, 'they did really well', 'they got what they wanted' etc. It gave nothing for grandparents to push back against.

RainbowColouredRainbows · 28/11/2024 06:35

JustinThyme · 27/11/2024 22:57

Ha! I thought it was a toss up between Giraffes and Graphs, and was hoping for the former.

I was hoping for the latter. I'd imagined him wheeling in a chart with a graph of how long everyone had spent watching tv that week, or how long they'd spent on housework etc
