What kind of things can I / nursery do to stimulate a bored child more ?

OP posts:
MasterBeth · 26/11/2024 21:10

Astronomy, Greek, algebra, Euclidian geometry, Stickle Bricks.

Coldautumnmornings · 26/11/2024 21:10

How can a 2 1/2 year old be bored? Is this real or a parody?

nam3c4ang3 · 26/11/2024 21:11

This isn't going to go well OP 😂

damdams · 26/11/2024 21:12

I've been told she's bored !

Also not really sure how a 2.5 yo can be bored. Especially at nursery - are there not puzzles, crafts, books, toys galore? What is really going on here?!

midgetastic · 26/11/2024 21:12

Read stories, sing , dance , counting games, colour games

Walk outside , play with leaves , park
Creative - paint , building castles with loo roll

goodkidsmaadhouse · 26/11/2024 21:12

The nursery is telling you she’s bored?

Calliopespa · 26/11/2024 21:14

Train set. Teach them to lay the tracks. When they can do that they need to join it up. Next insert loops and join up. Add bridges etc. Kept one of ours occupied for hours at that age. Also duplo and Lego when three.

CarrotPencil · 26/11/2024 21:14

What makes you think your 2.5 year old is bored? Can you give examples?

Some ideas my 2.5 year old enjoys currently:

sticking gems onto paper Christmas trees (glue on paintbrush not self adhesive) - has done this for about 6 hours over the past 2 days!

Draw round hands and feet on paper and painting on nail varnish - loves this!

Baking

Painting/drawing

Sorting coins (all 3 of mine have bloody loved this!)

Park - give them a scavenger hunt if you must eg find a big stick, find a small stick, find a pincecone

Kinetic sand - hours of fun

Number stuff

Letters stuff

Playing in the garden

Books

endless fun to be had…!

The nursery is telling you she’s bored?

Yes ! Because she's intelligent apparently. They're trying to do different things with her.

Is the nursery just rubbish.?

Astronomy, Greek, algebra, Euclidian geometry, Stickle Bricks.

Pretty good, but still gonna get bored. Probably add in something more physical, like interpretive dance? Or just contemporary ballet.

Calliopespa · 26/11/2024 21:15

Failing that, sone gcse mocks?

doodleschnoodle · 26/11/2024 21:15

Sounds like poor nursery care. 2yos shouldn't be bored at nursery, even child geniuses.

Actually, yes, probably they should be able to think of something!

CarrotPencil · 26/11/2024 21:16

Dance party

Puzzles - spent ages doing a puzzle together yesterday, world map with animals, vehicles etc to spot

hang out with friends

duplo (usually gets rejected in favour of Lego)

obsessed with her dolls and putting them to bed

To be honest normally very bright children find their own activities.

Sandcastles24 · 26/11/2024 21:18

Don’t do the same thing for too long.
Try lots of short things, I had a book called 5 minute games once from the library it was great.

Different children have different interests and motivations. My DC gets bored very quickly by colouring and will default to jumping on things or running around in a dangerous way.
DC will however sit for a good hour cutting up a piece of paper

damdams · 26/11/2024 21:18

@Calliopespa maybe my child is medium bright.

Not as dumb as the other kids but dumber then the ' really bright ' kids 😀

Usually bright children tend to stick at something - often for much longer than others.

Are you sure it’s not adhd op?

Sandcastles24 · 26/11/2024 21:20

It doesn’t mean the nursery isn’t good.

She might be better in bigger free flow nursery where they have multiple activity stations going at the same time. Different places for different kids

damdams · 26/11/2024 21:20

@Calliopespa I don't know what it is. This is what I've been told by the nursery.

comedycentral · 26/11/2024 21:21

They need to design their offer to suit all children’s needs. I don’t think the word bored belongs in the early years, to be honest! They need a wide and varied setup for all the children. What will they do to support her should be what you are asking them. It’s also entirely okay for her to self-direct her own learning and not be occupied in an activity at all times.

CarrotPencil · 26/11/2024 21:21

Hmm yes I was going to say that their attention span is generally half their age I believe… I see it in the kids I teach for sure… but then when they’re engrossed in something they love they can go for hours so I don’t know!

Basically a 2 year old only needs to be focussing on having a good time, so follow what holds her interest!

goodkidsmaadhouse · 26/11/2024 21:21

Yes. The nursery does sound pretty rubbish. Sorry.
My oldest was very precocious. She knew all her basic phonics by her second birthday. (This wasn’t us pressuring her in any way - she had one of those bookcases with the alphabet on and she asked me what each letter was, then remembered it). She was reading by 3.
But she was never, never bored at playgroup/nursery.
At 2.5 she had heaps of fun playing with the other kids, getting involved in all the stories and songs and messy play and crafts and outdoor play. Later on her nursery got her doing quite a bit of sit down numeracy and literacy, but she was 4 then (didn’t start school til 5 as we are in Scotland).
I would look for another setting to be honest.
