Be honest… what do you really do if working from home?

Just that really.

I often have a bath at lunchtime. Go to shops. Clean. Last Friday watched a Christmas film in the background in bed while doing some online training. Made a pie.

Sometimes I have to work very late. Sometimes on a weekend. So I think it balances out. Anyone else be honest? Do you ever have almost a day off doing life admin?

Where did I say I’m working for free? I just don’t stop at all.

Presumably you aren’t paid for breaks?

There seem to be so many offended martyrs on this thread. Who are in a competition to show that they don't get 5 minutes as they're so busy that they cant have a lunch break or hang a load of washing out, let alone go for a pee ( all whilst posting on MN😶) .

I can do anything that doesn't involve leaving my desk so MN posting is fine as is playing candy crush Grin I can also reach 3 windows so they're always clean Grin
No hanging washing out though

Not all jobs are the same. And some people just sound a bit...uncomfortable.
Competitive jobsworthery

i don’t disagree but there are a few comments along the lines of ‘if you were better at your job you’d be faster and more able to take time to do other things’ with seemingly no idea that there are jobs out there where it doesn’t matter how competent and fast you are the work keeps coming 😀

Fair. I think there are different kinds of jobs. NHS, tutoring (which I've done), just managers in general who do the same thing. I've had managers even in my sector who behave like that.

I don't think it's an employee thing. Though as a manager myself I've come across a few in office who just mess around. More of a culture. I really don't think people should compare jobs.

pinduckdo · 27/11/2024 20:25

Genuinely and honestly. I hardly look.up from the computer. No breaks, don't take my full lunch, a lot of meetings! work far harder at home and am much more productive.

FFS!!! Still it's been interesting having a genuine conversation even if it it was rubbish media generated!

Well now we know they're a daily Mail journalist it makes sense that they dont do any work. Just dredge up any old shite on Mumsnet and pretend it's journalism.

CarrotPencil · 26/11/2024 13:21

Well clearly I didn’t understand you saying ‘I knew it was always there but just not as much as working from home now’ - an absolutely meaningless sentence.

Ok carrot

GivingitToGod · 28/11/2024 20:20

Wffhh · 25/11/2024 15:16

@Scirocco i disagree as working in the office was lots of chatter and making tea! and leaving bang on time.

Where was the manager/supervisor allowing this to happen????

GivingitToGod · 28/11/2024 20:22

TrueOlympian · 26/11/2024 19:07

It really depends on the sector people work. Some workers require to produce outputs, eg write an article with a given deadline, others need to react to customers, eg at a call centre. If you submit your article on time or you put on washing when there are no phone calls, what’s the problem?

if you don’t submit your article on time or not respond to a phone call, then there are HR processes in place.

The problem is that you are not working for your contracted hours!

Braintree · 28/11/2024 20:33

I do what I want pretty much. I have X number of clients to look after and whatever it takes to deliver the right service level is what I do. I get paid for 35 hours but some weeks probably do 25. The odd week I do 40 plus but not as many as I used to.

The rest of the time I do what I want. Nobody ever asks. I go into the office or work from home. Up to me.

In summer for example I might start work at 7am, work for a few hours then sit in the garden, have a bit of lunch, read, sunbathe if it’s nice, do 3/4 lots of washing and just reply to emails etc for a few hours. I may then work 6-8 to tidy everything up.

im very lucky but have been there 15 years and working for 35 so I think my experience and skills are more important to them than how many hours I do.

GiddyRobin · 29/11/2024 02:46

GivingitToGod · 28/11/2024 20:22

My contracted hours are 9-5. So are my team's. My manager is aware and if I've done my work, isn't a jobsworth who makes me sit there and twiddle my thumbs for 5 hours. And I won't make other people either.

I will also work 5-8pm occasionally in a meeting with someone abroad.

Genuinely beginning to think the people who don't like this about others have mild comprehension issues. Maybe that's why their managers don't let them do what they want if their industry isn't NHS or something that means they need to be on the job. 🤷‍♀️

TrueOlympian · 29/11/2024 05:20

GivingitToGod · 28/11/2024 20:22

The problem is that you are not working for your contracted hours!

It really depends on the contract. There are employment contracts that include a phrase that states that employees are expected to work the hours needed to fulfil their job duties. I believe this means both ways, as there’s recognition that some days are busier than others and overtime is not paid.

XxSideshowAuntSallyx · 29/11/2024 07:26

GivingitToGod · 28/11/2024 20:22

My contracted hours are 37, no where in my contract does it say it has to be 9-5 so when I'm at home I start when I want and finish when I want. I'm in the office at 7.30 so I do more than my hours on those days.

I'm glad society is moving away from a rigid 9-5.

Wffhh · 25/11/2024 15:18

@takealettermsjones yes obviously I am working too and get urgent stuff done. I’m always by my laptop

You take your laptop to the shops and in the bathroom whilst you’re in the bath?

The Daily Mail, apparently.

When a thread is picked up by media it doesn’t necessarily mean the OP is a journalist.

Not always but it was really obvious this one was.

The new account/username. They couldn't even think of a decent user name, it's related to the topic.

The fact when I (lied) and said I slack off all the time they immediately came back and asked what sector I'm in (out of interest). I had purposefully posted this knowing if it was a journalist they would come back and ask what sector I'm in as they'd need that added detail and bonus points if it's a sector hated by the DM (ie civil service).

The general lack of engagement/conversation by the OP, unless fishing for more details.

The whole thing screamed DM journo from the start.

SquashedSquashess · 29/11/2024 09:11

Depends how much work I have on.

I worked an 18 hour day on Wednesday, working from home completing a transaction for a client in another time zone. On those days, wfh is better as I have a 2 hour round commute, which is lost time when working on urgent matters.

Some days I get to pop out for a lunchtime coffee, or get some chores done.

All comes down to what’s on my to-do list. Being in the office doesn’t affect how much work I do or don’t choose to do.

Yet another person who doesn't understand that Not All Jobs Are The Same.

I don't have contracted hours. My contract states that I am employed to do a particular job and therefore should work the hours required (within reason) to get that job done. But there is no mention of 9-5 or 35 hours a week, or whatever.

This week has been fairly quiet and I've therefore spent some time doing personal bits and bobs but, next week, I have a lot more in my diary. It's just the way it goes, peaks and troughs. Not really so hard to understand, is it?

Very sarcastic and defensive post.
I totally understand that there are multiple opportunities for people who are WFH to take the p*""
I know people who admit to it

Is this post designed and completed by a BOT to support the upcoming DM article that 95% of mumsnet admitted to skiving when WFH...

like seriously? Are you trying to perpetuate the idea that everyone skives when wfh?

It’s not an ‘idea’ or a myth. Everybody knows that the ONLY reason people are desperate to wfh is because it means they can, and do, skive. All the bs about being more productive at home is a crock of shit and we all know it.
