...to consider Christmas jumpers the very definition of nauseating twee?

...and, while I'm at it, Christmas pyjamas. I know someone who has a Christmas duvet set, for God's sake.

I'm not against Christmas. Tree, lights, It's a Wonderful Life, chocolate orange - I can handle all that. Embrace it even.

But Christmas jumpers? Not even for charity. Two quid to wear a Christmas jumper at work? Nah. Here's a tenner - I'm out.

I think that’s the point?

ThianWinter · 25/11/2024 10:31

They’re not meant to be taken seriously, or considered a must have fashion item. As for pyjamas and bedding, nothing wrong with that as long as people can afford them.

worrisomeasset · 25/11/2024 11:13

I have a fair isle style jumper that looks perfectly ok and which I wear at any point in the winter. At Christmas, it somehow magically becomes a Christmas jumper. Problem solved.

SmalllChange · 25/11/2024 11:15

You do you 🤷‍♂️

Gowlett · 25/11/2024 11:18

I think they may have been an American thing…

Then Mark Darcy wore one. And here we are!

Octavia64 · 25/11/2024 11:18

I fucking hate winter.

I have Christmas jumpers, dresses, bedding and towels.

Helps me get through the nasty cold but if the year.

So shoot me.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 25/11/2024 11:19

If you can’t be a bit naff or twee at Christmas….
Do you only give house room to ‘tasteful’ Christmas trees, OP? Those favoured by the style-police journalists for the glossy mags who tell the plebs among us how to decorate our trees?

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 25/11/2024 11:20

I love a good Christmas jumper! And Christmas pjs! I’d love a duvet set too but can’t quite allow myself to spend the money on it.

MarvelJesus · 25/11/2024 11:22

Then don’t wear one. Problem solved! Do you make threads about all the things you dislike? I would be on here constantly if I did that. Embrace the fact that our differences create a wonderfully vibrant world for us to enjoy, and don’t worry about things that you don’t have to concern yourself with. It’s a much better way to live your life.

5128gap · 25/11/2024 11:26

No the very definition of nauseating twee is to say "I wuv my hubz and bubz. Proudest mama bear in the whole wide world". Anything less than that is quite frankly amateur league.

I do dislike a Christmas jumper though. The last thing you want in overheated homes, offices, restaurants and bars is to be cocooned in a layer of scratchy wool/nylon, red faced and sweaty. A santa hat perched at a rakish angle is by far the better choice if you must.

Intimacies · 25/11/2024 11:26

I think the point is that they're nauseatingly twee? Pity me -- my university has a 'student Christmas' annually, during termtime, as term is long over by actual Christmas, and lots of students wear Christmas jumpers and do the Twelve Pubs of Christmas. Meaning that my lectures (and they always seem to be on something harrowing or very serious on that day) are delivered to an entire lecture theatre of Christmas jumpers.

Very hard to talk coherently about slavery narratives or something when the entire front row smells of Jagerbombs and is wearing light-up-nose Rudolf jumpers.

Heronwatcher · 25/11/2024 11:27

People have been wearing special clothes and decorating their houses for festivals (see also Easter, Halloween and their pagan predecessors) since time began. I bet even an early cave person saw a nice spring of Holly and daubed it to a wall at about this time of year. It’s part of a thread of tradition and culture and actually quite significant.

Christmas especially is for many a celebration of light and joy, whether it’s the joy of Christ or the joy of the light returning (days getting longer). It should be fun, a time for parties, being silly etc.

And before anyone starts with the money/ environment, everyone needs a duvet cover and if you have more than one why not make it a Christmas one? Ditto jumpers. Plus most people I know keep their Christmas “stuff” for decades.

Of course it's nauseating twee! That's why we wear them! I love a Christmas jumper 🤣🤣 and my kids have Christmas pjs!! And I also used to have a Christmas duvet set but I don't know what happened to.it and can't be bothered to buy a new one this year!!

It's all good fun in the spirit of tacky-ness isn't it?!

You sound fun

ChocolateTelephone · 25/11/2024 11:32

I don’t have a strong aesthetic horror of them but I think they can be wasteful. Fine if people wear the same one year after year, but so many people buy them each year and they’re worn once (and often made of acrylic, sequins and glitter!).

I find matching sets of family pyjamas quite cringeworthy but appreciate everyone has different tastes. As long as the pjs are worn throughout the year I don’t object so much.

JoggyBear · 25/11/2024 11:34

Then don't wear one

I like them. They're cheesy, bright and gaudy, like a good Christmas should be.

Yes I hang foil decorations from the ceiling and my Christmas light are multicoloured and flash!!

ThisTimeNextWeekDavid · 25/11/2024 11:36

I agree OP but then the only thing I like about Christmas is the tree and when it’s all over!

I hate the waste too if they’re treated as disposable.

My jumpers have been worn for years, same for my kids. I buy a size bigger so it does three years - one year a bit big, one year perfect and one year a bit small. Christmas pjs are not specific for Christmas either. When they’re outgrown, they go into the bag for a younger sibling. I’ve put loads on Vinted that are outgrown by all of my children but still have life in them.

TTPDTS · 25/11/2024 11:39

You can prise my Christmas pjs out of my frosty, festive hands.

Christmas pjs, Christmas pillows, Christmas decor, earrings, hair accessories, Christmas jumpers....the more the better!

TinkerTiger · 25/11/2024 11:40

Don’t buy them. You’re welcome.

isthesolution · 25/11/2024 11:40

I will wear nothing else for the rest of the year. Xmas jumper for the day, Xmas pjs at night.

Spreading joy 24/7 for the whole of the festive period :-)

PonyPatter44 · 25/11/2024 11:42

Go and get the 'Bah Humbug' hat / jumper. I used to wear my hat quite a bit at this time of year.

I'm much more relaxed less of a Colin Hunt these days.

WaltzingWaters · 25/11/2024 11:45

That’s kind of the point! I love a Christmas jumper. And, shock horror, we even have matching family Christmas pjs. My toddler thinks it’s the best thing when we’re all matching!
