As our main political leader I find his manner very condescending & passive aggressive. Very upset watching this.. Video linked here. Care workers in Ireland have been let down very badly by our politicians

I was really shocked. He always comes across as genuine and compassionate, so I was very disappointed in him.

I'm not shocked at all, the mask slipped.Look at all the waiting lists for children with scoliosis under FF/FG, their poor parents are begging for help & it's falling on deaf ears.

Cervical cancer scandal?
Children's hospital?

This incident could not have happened at a better time, the backlash is immense & with the help of God FG will be voted out on Fri (or lose a healthy amount of seats SH's seat included)

@Imperiallanger can I be very lazy and ask what other reasons you have for supporting Aontu? I'm still undecided and my head is spinning from trying to educate myself, I wish I had paid more attention. There is an Aontu candidate in my constituency and i don't know much about them. All the stuff on flyers is just buzz words or complaints about current government. I'm finding it hard to believe any of them have any alternative solutions.

Imperiallanger · 23/11/2024 23:01

For me as a single issue voter it's their strong stance against gender ideology. They are conservative which I think the country needs at the moment, they are committed to repealing the Gender Recognition Act & protecting female spaces & sports.

Aontú are quite rightly horrified at the new sphe programme & have pledged to make it age & content appropriate for children & teenagers.

Also they were ferociously strong during the care & family referendum, they were the only party to be on winning side of the No/No vote.

Sinn Féin said at the time if they were to get into power they would rerun the care & family referendums if the Yes side lost. This immediately rang warning bells for me as we are supposed to be a democracy, how many million would SF waste rerunning the referendums if they got into power.

I like Peadar Toibíns common sense, no nonsense, anti woke approach. He's a formidable debator & holds all the others to task at ease in the Dáil.

I basically want the opposite of the shower we have at the moment so that's why I'm voting Aontú, the rest will go to independents. Have no intention of voting all the way down in case anyone I don't want gets in on my transfers!

He didn't handle it well at all but I don't think anyone would come across well when someone challenges them like that with the cameras rolling in their face. She was trying to openly humiliate him. What could he say really? There was no appropriate answer. Would it be worse if he lied to her? Or nodded along and made all the right noises but did nothing. She was 100% correct, carers are treated like shit in Ireland and I don't blame her for her anger, I'd be angry too. I just wish a government, any government, would actually do something about it. Whether they talk the talk when canvassing isn't really the big issue.

I don’t think she was trying to openly humiliate him, she was just very upset and angry. He definitely could have handled it better. Even if he had said, “I’m very sorry that you feel that way, I understand your frustration” or something to show a bit of empathy would have been better than going on the defensive as he did. He definitely seemed to be caught off guard by her and her level of upset but he should be prepared for encounters like that while out canvassing

Dontlletmedownbruce · 23/11/2024 23:15

Thanks @Imperiallanger from my (very brief) research they also support the 3 day abortion wait period which other parties are trying to change. I don't support this change as that was the terms people voted in favour of in the referendum.

He's not used to unscripted questions. The woman was in super valu, shopping on a Friday opportunity & seized the opportunity to ask Simon Harris a few home truths.

We have every right to hold politicians accountable at every opportunity. We choose them to work for us, we pay their wages through our taxes so we have every right to hold them to task if they are not doing their job.

He was in Kanturk, Co Cork advocating for TD John Paul O Shea. I cannot imagine his seat is safe now & I hope the locals have a good alternative to vote for.
That courageous lady has a wave of global support & good will which shows that arrogance, entitelement & contempt will never be tolerated. Let's hope the support for the carers & all carers continues on Friday & Fine Gael lose a load of seats😁😁

You're welcome. I don't like this part of their manifesto. It doesn't bother me as they won't be able to change it, they would need the support of the Dáil & it simply won't happen

Us women & mothers would have been eradicated from the constitution if it wasn't for Aontú & like minded independents. They fought hard & achieved a no/no result.

Another thread that reads like an Aontú party political broadcast.

For a party that are set to get 3% of the vote they sure seem over represented on here.

Comparing Simon Harris to trump ? 🤣 he might have handled it better but I can't see him shouting grab them by the pussy anytime soon.

whichcandidate.ie is a good starting point for trying to decide.

Imperiallanger · 23/11/2024 23:42

Hi @mollyfolk you're a bit late to the party!
I hope you're enjoying the massive backlash Simon Harris & Fine Gael are getting accross all platforms 😁
Give credit where credit is due to RTE for exposing the Taoiseachs deplorable behaviour towards that poor woman. I don't usually have such warmth towards RTE but they are playing a blinder in the past few days!

I think Trump has displayed similar displays of contempt in the past towards people who have questioned his policies. So yes it's a fair comparison.

Lets see how many seats Aontú plus the Independents get next week @mollyfolk you may be very surprised.. Remember Kamala Harris was supposed to win the US election by a landslide according to the polls. Look how that turned out😅

This.

Simon Harris handled the situation extremely badly yesterday, but it's quite clear now what OP's agenda is.

Aontu as a party only exists because of Toibin's opposition to repeal of the 8th. They are hardly champions of women's rights. And the 3 day waiting period should go, aside from being a barrier to women accessing appropriate healthcare (particularly in some rural areas where coverage is dreadful), it's downright insulting too.

As for presenting Gript as a viable source, that's absolutely laughable.

mollyfolk · 24/11/2024 00:01

At best she inched ahead of him in some polls by the narrowest of margins.

It's a truly bonkers comparison. And I say this as a non Fine Gael voter.

If you are a socially conservative nationalist who hates trans people more than you value reproductive rights well Aontú is the right party for you.

And isn't it wonderful we have a decent choice for the elections. We can all vote for parties that align with our views.

Imperiallanger · 24/11/2024 00:06

@Sakura7 as you don't like Gript here is Aontú's manifesto from RTE who are being so impressive this week 😁

The mind boggles

Right now, we have 14,486 people homeless in the state. In a country that is awash with money we are failing in the most basic ways.

There are on average 100 people a year who have changed their legal gender using the Gender recognition act.

What seems the most pressing to you?

Sakura7 · 24/11/2024 00:26

The same Aontu that couldn't even have their manifestos printed in time for their launch. 😂

Imperiallanger · 24/11/2024 00:30

I do not want males with penis identifying as "women" in my personal spaces. I don't care if there is only one man identifing as a woman, I don't want his penis in my female only space or my daughters. Aontú want to repeal the Gender Recognition Act which is fantastic & a good step forward. Thank God the pronoun nonsense has faded away but I am very happy that Aontú are taking a very strong stand against gender ideology & vouch to protect female only spaces. A

I am a single issue voter, always have been. Aontú really impressed during the care /family referendum. They never once faltered from their firm stance on No/No & ultimately were the only Dáil party on the winning side.

Read Aontú's manifesto they have a good housing plan & it's certainly more credible than some of the others.

They are also very vocal & against the pornographic sphe programme this government happily rolled out.

Aontu are very much against the dangerous hate speech Bill & Peadar Toibín did not sign the new hate crime bill. Proper opposition

I don't give a fiddlers fart who you are voting for @mollyfolk

Cervical cancer scandal.. Scoliosis children waiting 4 years for treatment after he promised they would only be waiting a couple of months ..
The childrens hospital.
The bike shed
Would a "good man" let all the above happen on his watch?
I agree with the woman as does the majority of the country.. Oh how the mighty have fallen. Thank you RTE!

Not so, they only released it on Thursday just gone!

It wasn't Peadar making an issue of the SF manifesto, it was Simon Harris. It would have been massively hypocritical coming from Peadar!

Imperiallanger · 24/11/2024 00:46

He publicly launched his manifesto on Thursday. He had his & the other leaders would have seen Aontú's prior to the debate. None of the other nine leaders saw anything from Sinn Féin & Peadar rightly called Mary Lou out as did the others.

Aontú at least are extremely gender critical & want the Gender Recognition Act reversed. I'm a single issue voter who is shocked at how captured the main parties are with gender identity so I am delighted to have Aontú to vote for. This quote from RTE sums it up!

Are you the same person that was shilling aontú, the party who are against women's healthcare on another thread in craicnet or is there more than one of you?

I said he was right to walk away when she insulted him. Him being a good man (or not) is irrelevant to that point.

Oh, I don’t know. He isn’t the first politician to have an awkward encounter made the most of by rival politicians and people who didn’t like him anyway. I’m reminded of Gordon Brown and the “bigot” encounter.

I’m not a big fan of these people who ambush politicians in this way. I don’t think they are always quite as they are portrayed.
