To wonder if everyone has pudding/dessert after their main evening meal?

Whenever meal threads come up it seems the majority of MN have something after their main meal even if its just fruit or yoghurt. I usually have fruit or yoghurt as part of my lunchtime meal and evenings are just the one course. Am I in the minority? Obviously if I want anything later as a snack I do so but it's certainly not routine.

YABU you always have something after your main meal

YANBU you never/rarely have something after your main meal

Rarely at home, unless we have guests. Occasionally I'll buy a ready made tiramisu as a treat

BeringBlue · 22/11/2024 21:23

Not after our evening meal (but we usually have something sweet after lunch).
We stopped years ago when we realised the sugar was making it difficult for us to fall asleep and now we don't miss it. I have to remember when we have guests that they might like something sweet - I have forgotten before now 😳.

ohtowinthelottery · 22/11/2024 21:24

We only have pudding if we've got guests. Very occasionally DS will have natural yoghurt and honey for pudding but usually only if I say "there's yoghurt in the fridge that needs using up".

Auburngal · 22/11/2024 21:29

I don’t usually have a pudding at home. If I do, it’s about an hour. A yoghurt.

At parents, it’s homemade crumble, a cake or in the summer it’s berries

Meggie2008 · 22/11/2024 21:32

Not really. Sometimes we have magnums in the freezer so occasionally I might have one of them, but I'd say probably only once every couple of weeks

Girasoli · 22/11/2024 21:37

I sometimes have some fruit after dinner.
I also sometimes have a cup of tea and a few biscuits watching TV later on, or DS1 and I have hot chocolate pudding pots as a treat.

If I was going out to eat I would pick pudding over a starter though, especially tiramisu.

Dark chocolate biscuit or brownie. The dark chocolate is magnesium rich so helps relaxation, the sugar is glucose and glucose helps pass all the minerals from your meal through the digestive tract into the cells and the blood, which will also create relaxation.
Yes there is a scientific reason for pudding! 😀

I LOVE this explanation, and am going to adopt it forthwith. . 😁

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 22/11/2024 21:43

We have something maybe once in 6 weeks, if I feel like making e.g. an apple crumble, an Eve’s Pudding, or a cherry clafoutis. But I’ll always provide one for guests. We’d both be like the side of a house if we had puddings every day.

ApplesinmyPocket · 22/11/2024 21:47

My DH always has some kind of pudding after lunch and dinner. Yoghurt, chocolate mousse, biscuits, bakewell tart, crumble. He's 84, skinny and active for his age so his daily puddings have obviously kept him ultra-fit 😉

But it's another of those MN 'things' to disparage pudding, and not the first, or even 100th, OP I've seen disingenuously asking if they are 'odd' for not having pudding, when what they really mean is 'praise me! I wouldn't dream of having PUDDING', tempered with a fair bit of 'anyone who does is not as virtuous as I am.'

Marine30 · 22/11/2024 21:48

Not really a pudding but yes, normally something sweet after dinner like a couple of chocolate rice cakes or a chocolate biscuit. Love chocolate but not chocolate desserts - but then I usually have a small main meal so the pudding is not too ‘extra’.
DD always has pudding of some sort. Kids rarely do but may have fruit or sweets later.

GonnaBeASuperSaver · 22/11/2024 21:48

No. But we do snack on biscuits in the evening or something else sweet.

LunaNorth · 22/11/2024 21:49

I always have a little sump’n sump’n.

Yoghurt, or a biscuit, or a little cake, or some fruit. Ice cream in summer. One of life’s little pleasures.

Chairchimedes · 22/11/2024 22:20

Up until this year, every single night without fail, something fairly substantial like sponge & custard, brownie & ice cream etc. Always home made, always totally delicious.

But this year I decided to lose weight because unsurprisingly 500+ calorie desserts every night do not help the waistline. I've lost 4 stone simply by cutting out dessert on weekdays and no other dietary change or exercise. I started in January and I still totally crave pudding every single night. I have a piece of dark chocolate or couple of dried apricots instead but it is not the same and I really mourn my puddings :(

Ineedaholidayyyy · 22/11/2024 22:29

I grew up always having something after tea, "afters" as we used to call it. Not necessarily a pudding like you would find in a pub, but a yogurt, chocolate bar, Angel delight...that sort of thing. More like a snack, but just after tea.

It's a habit I've never been able to shift and I still do this now. My go to things are are those skinny whip bar things, alpro soya deserts or rice crackers, I try and pick something low calorie, but still feels like a little treat.

Oddsquadnumber1 · 22/11/2024 22:30

I wish I could but I'd get fat so fast. Also I've found forming the habit of a sweet thing after a meal makes it very hard to resist, so I avoid it unless a special occasion or a meal out. I do love a pudding though

blotchyskin · 22/11/2024 22:32

My kids have Greek yogurt and oats. DH and I don't have anything. Didn't really have them as kids and I just see it as a waste of calories. I sometimes have an evening snack of Greek yogurt and pineapple/fruit if I'm still hungry.

Skiingsnoww · 22/11/2024 22:33

Maybe a yoghurt or mousse.

SallyWD · 22/11/2024 22:35

Never. Not even in a restaurant or on a special occasion. I'm not being virtuous, I just really don't fancy it. I eat really big meals and am always very full and satisfied. The thought of eating something sugary when I'm full just doesn't appeal.

JumpstartMondays · 22/11/2024 22:35

The kids always ask for pudding (18m and 4yo), they get fruit or yoghurt during the week, maybe a traybake pancake if I can be bothered, and what I'd call "a proper pud" at the weekend. DH and I hold the pudding until after the kids are in bed and will have a couple of biscuits/piece of cake/fruit and yoghurt/bit of traybake pancake as an evening snack.

weareallcats · 22/11/2024 22:40

Very rarely as part of dinner, but I often have a bit of chocolate or something later on.

Tintackedsea · 22/11/2024 22:43

My dad always does. My kids usually have fruit at the very least. My dh would love to. I rarely have even if we go out.

That said, I made crème brûlée last Sunday and it was amazing!

Noseybookworm · 22/11/2024 22:45

Very rarely. I might make a crumble at the weekend and occasionally buy those little pots of tirimisu or slice of cheesecake. We usually have a cup of tea after dinner and might have a couple of biscuits!

MereDintofPandiculation · 22/11/2024 22:47

I like to finish a meal with something sweet. I have a very light main dish with no carbs in compensation.

downwindofyou · 22/11/2024 22:53

At home never
