Do you think pubs are the right place for foodbank collections?

I noticed a local pub was collecting for the foodbank and asking for advent calendars to be donated.
Do you think pubs are the right places or dosent it matter?

Do you think they will get many contributions?

I would of thought supermarkets were best as people are doing their shopping there.
The pub often puts on it's social media it's collecting too.
I don't know it's just seems odd to see a pub advertising these things.
Maybe it's just me?

It's a little odd, but it won't be either/or. The more collection points they have the better IMO.

MillyMichaelson · 21/11/2024 21:01

Well a lot of pubs are centres for the local community so sure, why not?

AllTangledUpInTinselAndTiaras · 21/11/2024 21:01

Just as good as any other hub IMO.

I agree.

The sad thing is that they are even necessary.

Gogogo12345 · 21/11/2024 21:02

It would work where I live Far more pubs than supermarkets. The church and the street pastors collect for food banks here. Not sure Waitrose has a collection bin

MoreDangerousThanAWomanScorned · 21/11/2024 21:03

I don't really see any possible objection? Either they'll get a lot of donations - great. Or they won't and then the situation is the same as if they hadn't bothered.

Parapaderapa · 21/11/2024 21:04

Yes definitely, a lot of pubs are the centre of the community. A lot of supermarkets tend to be out of town.

lightsandtunnels · 21/11/2024 21:05

Lots of pubs now get really involved in local community and fundraising for different things so I don't think it's unusual. If anything, it's a pretty good idea to help support local charities and families in need in a place where people visit and must have a few quid to spare otherwise they wouldn't be able to afford to go to the pub!

NotbloodyGivingupYet · 21/11/2024 21:59

In some places, the pub is the only place left where the community can come together.
They want to do their bit, that's fine by me. (It was rather sane in the COVID lockdown, some of our locals really stepped up.

Advent Calendars?

OP posts:
DollopOfFun · 21/11/2024 22:14

Why would it not be?

And what about Advent Calendars??

Advent Calendars?

Do children living in poverty with no food not deserve an advent calendar then?

Advent Calendars?

A little joy in the festive season for those who can't afford own brand beans. What's the issue. People need joy.

What about them?

Advent Calendars?

Yes but only the ones with a picture behind the door no chocolate.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 21/11/2024 22:17

Why shouldn't kids who's parents are struggling have advent calendars,?

dottypotter · 21/11/2024 22:20

They are so cheap to buy though.
I can't see many people going out and buying advent calendars and dropping them off at the pub.

OP posts:
MoreDangerousThanAWomanScorned · 21/11/2024 22:21

I honestly don't know what the problem is - is it that you think the pub are going to steal them or something?

MillyMichaelson · 21/11/2024 22:21

Why not? Plenty businesses round here do advent calendar collections.

Confused as to why this is such a thing for you, it's really common!

AllTangledUpInTinselAndTiaras · 21/11/2024 22:21

If you are in dire straits a couple of pounds per child for an advent calendar may not be doable. I've given treats and calendars and other nice stuff to foodbank collections before.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 21/11/2024 22:24

We have a pub not exactly local but not far and it raises money or gets donations all year round. Advent calendars, Easter eggs, all gratefully received

BobbyBiscuits · 21/11/2024 22:25

Pubs are a great place. They often have charity tins there and posters about charity events.
Drunk people can be a bit more generous. If people wanted to they could try and sell raffle tickets, do charity karaoke or something? Lots of people are in pubs round Xmas feeling festive so I'd say it's a good tactic. You can always refuse. X

DollopOfFun · 21/11/2024 22:25

Maybe it's just me?

Yeah I think this might just be you. A pub that does collections for the community food banks suggests in the run up to the start of December that donations of advent calendars might be good, isn't really an outlandish situation.

And to be fair, I'm far more likely to visit a pub than a supermarket!

Fluufer · 21/11/2024 22:26

Why not? Worst case they don't collect very many.
It probably works becuase people like their generosity to be visible.

Parapaderapa · 21/11/2024 22:28

BeMintBee · 21/11/2024 22:17

Yes but only the ones with a picture behind the door no chocolate.

Surely chocolate is better than no chocolate? Especially if you’re going to a food bank!
