Do you think pubs are the right place for foodbank collections?

I noticed a local pub was collecting for the foodbank and asking for advent calendars to be donated.
Do you think pubs are the right places or dosent it matter?

Do you think they will get many contributions?

I would of thought supermarkets were best as people are doing their shopping there.
The pub often puts on it's social media it's collecting too.
I don't know it's just seems odd to see a pub advertising these things.
Maybe it's just me?

And people don't make a special journey. They usually buy some and drop them if they happen to be visiting the pub. That's why it's good to have lots of different places as drop off points. You might be going to the pub but not the supermarket or the local church or anywhere else

SuperfluousHen · 21/11/2024 22:29

Churches have collection points, also my local petrol station. Why not pubs? The more collection points, the better, surely?

saraclara · 21/11/2024 22:36

People get convivial in a pub, so it probably makes them generous! It's a great idea. As was said earlier, it's not an either/or. The local supermarket isn't going to put its food bank donation boxes away because the pubs doing it. The more the merrier!

I really don't get what's making you think that it's inappropriate.

Surely chocolate is better than no chocolate? Especially if you’re going to a food bank!

I was joking!

ARichtGoodDram · 21/11/2024 22:43

Pub here collects more than anywhere else locally for the food bank. It's walkable for most people in the village. The supermarket is miles away and most people get their shopping delivered

ForPearlViper · 21/11/2024 22:48

But WHY do you think it might be odd OP? Why the need to question if it is OK? What is it you think about pubs that puts this doubt in your mind?

RobertaFirmino · 21/11/2024 22:48

Anywhere safe is the best place for a food bank collection. It's clear you have never known poverty and I'm glad about that but there really are people out there who have to watch every single penny and might not be able to stretch to a couple of quid for an advent calendar. Count your blessings and consider popping into the pub with a couple of inexpensive selection boxes because the recipients will likely be over the moon with them.

They are so cheap to buy though.
I can't see many people going out and buying advent calendars and dropping them off at the pub.

I can. We live rurally and our local pub does both a food bank drop off point and a gift drop off for a charity supplying children with presents from Santa. We support both every year.

Elleherd · 21/11/2024 23:12

It's you.
People who can afford to buy a drink in a pub, have disposable money.
I think it's an excellent idea, they should include buy a round and effectively include 'a drink' for someone in need. Happy largess, everyone wins.

You think people who can’t afford to buy food and need to use food banks think advent calendars are cheap?

NoBinturongsHereMate · 22/11/2024 00:19

Our local undertaker has a food bank collection basket, and it's usually well filled. People generally go to a pub more often than an undertaker so that's a great place to collect.

As for objecting to advent calendars because they're cheap ... words fail me. I don't think you understand what - or who - food banks are for.

Yes, but if you don't have much money for "fun" things, even if the calendars are only £1 or £2 it can feel like loads. Especially if you have more than one child.
I donate to our local Foodbank drop off point and noticed the other day that there were several advent calendars in it. So people clearly do buy and donate them.
So glad they do as all kids should have an advent calendar at Christmas!

Advent Calendars?

no differnet than easter eggs

Don't worry, I read it as a joke - as in, "no chocolate for them, that's far too luxurious and frivolous, make it a plain picture one only!"

<disclaimer -I love the plain picture ones the best, they are Christmas for me!>

Opentooffers · 22/11/2024 01:21

I think it could work better out of a pub than at a supermarket - where people are already feeling the pressure of how much their food shop is going to cost this time, so less inclined to donate as well. Merry people down the pub, who have disposable income to spend in the pub, are more likely to feel like donating at the time.

JustinThyme · 22/11/2024 01:23

They collect at the football stadium, why not a pub?

Yeah, that's a good point re disposable income too. Can see people buying some advent calendars on their way to the pub to pop into the pub collection point.

I always put advent calendars in with my donation. Our food bank also asked for Christmas’ napkins, which I happily supplied!

TwinklyNight · 22/11/2024 03:56

Well drunk people often are extra generous!

I think the poster was being facetious.

Justfortodayembaressed · 22/11/2024 10:34

@dottypotter wtf is wrong with you? Suggestvyouread and take notes and maybe visit somewhere out of your comfort zone (a pub perhaps??) To see how people actually live, what a stupid goady asshole post

Singleandproud · 22/11/2024 10:48

Pubs are community centres, people will go in drop bits off, maybe stay for a lemonade. The more places available for collection the better

Our local uses it's function room during the day for groups that would traditionally be held at a village hall, Knit and Natter, Board games, even parent and toddler so would be fine

Maybe the point is that they're cheap - people can help out and only have to spend a couple of quid

Either way I'm sure advent calendars was only a suggestion and they'll take any donations people want to give

My friend helps run a food bank, last year when I asked what they were short of she said selection boxs. I usually don’t buy these as in the past they have had donations from companies but last year they had not had any.
