Pierced ears still bleeding slightly months after being pierced

ChilliHeeler1 · 21/11/2024 20:45

I got my daughters ears pierced over the summer, and was very careful to follow all aftercare instructions, I continue to clean them with warm water and piercing aftercare spray twice daily yet months later and there is STILL tiny amounts of blood when she removes her earrings at night. She says they’re not sore etc. She has sterling silver earrings, thought these wouldn’t cause irritation but why are they still bleeding months after being pierced? She had them done at a professional piercers within a tattoo shop, not at Claire’s Accessories etc.
is this normal?

Is she taking them out overnight? That's not going to help. Also try some titanium earrings, much better

Scutterbug · 21/11/2024 20:48

I think the taking out overnight might not be helping when they are still relatively new. Were they done with a needle?

AllYearsAround · 21/11/2024 20:50

When did she start removing them?

Maybe try titanium instead. My dc had their ears pierced at the end of the summer, haven't taken them out yet but no irritation with titanium.

dementedpixie · 21/11/2024 20:50

Why on earth is she taking them out?
Leave them alone to heal. Every time they are removed they will tear the scab off and will never form new skin

Changingplace · 21/11/2024 20:54

As others have said taking them out won’t be helpful, get some studs she can sleep in, there’s no need to keep taking them out, that’s probably what’s irritating the piercings and stopping them fully healing.

Atishooo · 21/11/2024 20:55

Just leave them in. Why is she taking them out? It will be irritating them.

I rarely take mine out.

nonbinaryfinery · 21/11/2024 20:55

Try swapping them out for titanium as a previous poster has said. I'm hideously allergic to things that aren't titanium or surgical steel, and both of those metals are unproblematic for me.

InTheRainOnATrain · 21/11/2024 20:58

She shouldn’t be taking them when they’re still relatively new piercings. Ok to change them after 6-8 weeks if all healed but it’s one pair our and put another straight in as they should stay in round the clock for the first year really. Also, I would try titanium studs instead as it’s hypoallergenic. Put them in, then leave them alone, don’t touch them, just saline spray twice a day.

Asparename · 21/11/2024 21:05

You aren’t supposed to remove them at all for six months and it’s usually about a year before you can remove them for a while without them healing over.

You need to keep a piercing in for the full year after having them pierced. You can bring them out to change the earring after 8-10 weeks, if you must, but not to leave them out overnight. You'll keep breaking the healing skin which is trying to heal overnight.

I would also say that after the initial piercing has healed twice daily cleaning is too much.

Keep the earrings in full time and clean around them front and back once a day. If you're concerned about a allergy to the metal go for titanium or surgical steel, personally I'm allergic to silver, so it's gold, or surgical steel for me.

Freebumblebee · 22/11/2024 03:11

Titanium/surgical steel earrings as others have suggested. But also get flat backed-earrings; butterfly backs can catch and irritate the skin. Also definitely don’t be sleeping in hoop earrings.

Makingchocolatecake · 24/11/2024 12:23

Stop taking them out for bed. I used to spray mine with the cleaning solution and twist the earring.

dementedpixie · 24/11/2024 12:38

Shouldn't twist them either as that will also interfere with the healing process

Katemax82 · 24/11/2024 12:40

Are her earlobes thick? My 11 year old daughter got her ears pierced (at Claire.. yes I'm the worst mum) and it seemed they weren't healing. I found her earrings i put on her after the 8 weeks were too short in the post and were digging into her earlobes stopping them healing so I ordered some Sterling silver earrings for thick.lobes from amazon and they are much better

adulthoodisajoke · 24/11/2024 12:44

Id say leave them in overnight
if she finds them uncomfortable look into some flat back earrings. there is then no post to dig in. alternatively sleeper hoops, but not sure if school would allow even tiny hoops

TofuCat · 24/11/2024 12:45

I found mine healed so much quicker with hoops rather than studs. I think because more air was able to get to the wound.

ChilliHeeler1 · 25/11/2024 15:07

Hi, thanks for your replies, no her earlobes aren’t thick, both earlobes have a little bump around the piercing now that wasn’t there before and keep bleeding small amounts - I’ve taken them out and am going to go back to the piercers for advice around how they’re looking/putting a flatback titanium pair in?

Sometimes just patience is needed. They will heal eventually. Are they actually hurting her ? I also wouldn't be taking them out overnight as there's no need, I never take mine out unless I want to swap them over. I've got 4 in each ear

ChilliHeeler1 · 25/11/2024 15:20

No she says they’re not hurting other than when we take them in and out…..I feel like we’ve got into a bit of a vicious cycle because if they’re sore and bleeding I have to take them out to clean any blood etc off, but according to the messages here it’s likely to be the taking them out that’s causing irritation?!

OP posts:
NoBodyIdRatherBe · 25/11/2024 15:24

A little bump is common. Get comfortable studs with a flat back and leave them in. Spray them with saline and then use a hairdryer on cold to dry the area. They shouldn’t be left wet.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 25/11/2024 15:28

You don't need to take them out to clean them, use a cotton bud to gently clean any visible blood while the earring is in.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 25/11/2024 15:28

Also, she could well be allergic to silver, get some titanium ones.

Definitely. They need to stay in. I have lots of piercings and have never had any bother. I leave them in until fully healed. I don't even change them before that. It is quicker and easier that way. Google keloid and see if that is what the bumps are.

I would have kept them in until seeing the piercer.

DreadPirateRobots · 25/11/2024 15:35

Just leave them in!!! Most of your difficulty is caused by all this taking them out and in! They just stay put and you clean around them with cotton buds.

Just put a comfortable pair of studs in there, clean around them with saline and a cotton bud, don't touch them unless necessary and only with washed hands and LEAVE THEM BE and they will almost certainly be fine soon enough.

dementedpixie · 25/11/2024 16:14

Ffs stop taking the earrings out! Clean around the piercing with the earrings in place.

Put the earrings in and leave them in place until you get advice from the piercer.
