I always approach these with trepidation as some folk can to get overdrunk and show themselves up or say things they wish they hadnt

I think I actually hate them and im dreading ours but cannot get out of it now - if you back out at a late stage they make you pay for your place

mine is coffee and cake in a local garden centre and i really look forward to it as i work with lovely people

MyOpalViewer · 21/11/2024 15:29

why don’t you just go for food and a drink and then head off?

MyOpalViewer · 21/11/2024 15:29

why would other people saying things they regret impact you?

hopeishere · 21/11/2024 15:30

Hate them. So forced. I don't drink at them and am the first to leave. And ours is paid for so I can't even moan about the cost!

sweetpickle2 · 21/11/2024 15:30

Who cares if other people show themselves up? Unless you're actually talking about yourself.

I love a works do but if you hate them seems weird that you agreed to go.

Rainbow321 · 21/11/2024 15:30

To be avoided at all costs !
But if you really , really have to attend , stay 20 minutes after the meal , and slink off at first opportunity .

Silvertulips · 21/11/2024 15:31

I would also take the meal and a few drinks and leave early. I’m not going this year.

They are hard work and it’s embarrassing seeing people ‘cop off’ throw up or just generally behave awfully.

TheChosenTwo · 21/11/2024 15:32

I enjoy ours, management pay for our meals and a couple of glasses of wine, it’s billed as ‘staff conference’, we meet for an hour and have that and then decamp to a restaurant for lunch then we are free to go - lots of us go on to the pub! I am always careful not to drink to excess or embarrass myself though 😂

dhxxx · 21/11/2024 15:33

I love work dos. I have always liked the people I work with because if I don't, I leave. I spend all day interacting with my colleagues so it's an important criteria for me. I only stay at workplaces where I like the people, therefore I like socialising with them and enjoy work socials. I've only had one Xmas party I've not enjoyed it and I left a few weeks later. I'm not a big drinker anymore but don't beegrude others letting their hair down

SmokeRingsOfMyMind · 21/11/2024 15:37

As an employment lawyer they provide a nice post-Christmas bump in work arising from the fallout.

Tara336 · 21/11/2024 15:40

I don't enjoy them these days, husbands company so I have to show my face, but can't have a drink due to medication and if I'm honest I'd rather be at home with a cup of tea

ImthatBoleyngirl · 21/11/2024 15:41

I love them! We all get drunk and no one judges anyone else!

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 21/11/2024 15:41

I enjoy a Christmas Do, chance to let your hair down and get to know your colleagues a bit better 🫣😂

Dobbythechristmaself · 21/11/2024 15:43

We have a great laugh. As some others have said, I like the people I work with and it’s fantastic to have a meal and some drinks outside of work.

usernother · 21/11/2024 15:43

I loved them when I was young. They were great fun, although I was never lucky to work somewhere where they were paid for by the company. There were things happened at them that are still talked about nowShock I went to my last ever one a year ago and now I'm older and wiser, I had a really good time watching the exploits of staff from other companies and wondering how they were going to feel in the morning.

Remember to not book it next years.

I’m a sahm but I’m glad there are nolonger works dos.

ginasevern · 21/11/2024 15:45

I used to bloody love them but then it was the 80's and early 90's so a different time and vibe. Everything was always paid for, including a free bar and they were something to really look forward to. I was blessed with great colleagues too.

notatinydancer · 21/11/2024 15:46

I never go. I find them cringey and forced fun.

EveryDayisFriday · 21/11/2024 15:46

V small company (4x members of staff). We go for lunchtime drinks on a Friday, a mid afternoon meal at restaurant and carry on drinking until the pubs shut then ubers home, all expenses paid. The ones who get v drunk are the bosses which is quite funny. I end up sobering up by the end of the night. It's usually a good time, we all wfh so only meet up at Xmas.

Didimum · 21/11/2024 15:46

Really enjoy ours. I always have a good laugh him my colleagues. We have a fun dynamic. Food and drink all paid for.

LadyKenya · 21/11/2024 15:50

I used to enjoy them, and always went, when I worked with people who I actually liked. When I switched jobs, I went to the Christmas do the first year, and then never repeated it. I made no excuses, I just let them know that I would not be attending. In the great scheme of things, it really is not that important, and some people should just decline the invite, instead of hand wringing over it all.

ByHardyRubyEagle · 21/11/2024 15:51

Cba. I don’t go, and don’t care what others think.

5128gap · 21/11/2024 15:56

Ours are very staid well behaved nice dinners. I don't love them, because while I like my colleagues, I don't find socialising with them all equally enjoyable, and as a manager can't really settle in with the ones I find most fun. So i have to make a lot of conversation about their interests with perfectly nice people, that I'd rather not listen to if im honest. I also don't get very excited by the food (vegan and don't like risotto!) so I feel like I'm kind of sat there pushing food around listening to how Denise's horse riding is going and waiting to be allowed home.
I'd LOVE a party where people got drunk and danced to cheesy Christmas songs though.

tanstaafl · 21/11/2024 15:56

Used to go, on and off. Was paid for but usually a fair way to travel for me ( company tried its best to be central to the majority of workers ).

I stopped when I didn’t recognise the vast majority of faces.

Prefer a team do’ tbh.

Natsku · 21/11/2024 16:02

I just started a new job and found out what our christmas do will be. Christmas meal (paid for by company), followed by a sauna evening (which I'm sure will be accompanied by drinking, as is tradition), which is a bit awkward considering there's only one other woman working here.
