I will start. Every year a certain family member gets me bath bombs. I cannot use them as i am alergic to them. I have suggested things i would prefer every year like chocolates or a good bottle of wine. This family member always fails to listen. I am fed up of pretending to be greatful.

A box of band aid in the work Secret Santa. Because I was a mother.

ILoveVeg · 22/11/2024 17:23

A member of my family once left identical presents for me and for someone who wanted to stalk me. They even left the present for me to give to the other person. They could not have done anything more inappropriate. I couldn't wait to throw the things away.

A plastic musical christmas snowglobe Confused
This was a present.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 22/11/2024 17:39

One year my mum gave me the needles and yarn to knit my dad a scarf. I did point out that this was more a present for him than for me, but she guilt-tripped me into keeping it and knitting him the scarf.

It was a stocking present, rather than my main present, but still…

Mylifesadrama · 22/11/2024 17:48

When I was in my 20s, a pack of five high waisted floral granny knickers from my sister! My sister and I are like chalk and cheese, and I so wished I’d repaid the presence following year with a pack of thongs for her!

Newname71 · 22/11/2024 17:50

A gift card from a well known steak restaurant…..I’ve been a vegetarian for 37 years 😂

Daisybridge · 22/11/2024 17:55

I received a half eaten tube of pringles once

Kentucky83 · 22/11/2024 17:58

Only one that I can think of, just because I've had much more fun buying them since I became an adult! Nowadays if someone gives me something I like then it's cool and if I don't like it I'll pass it on, it's no big deal. But when I was about 15 there was an item of clothing I wanted that cost more than DM could afford. She got me a cheaper alternative which my 'friend' thought was hilarious, which then upset me. Wouldn't bother me now at all but at 15 I was gutted.

Pilgrimgirl · 22/11/2024 18:07

Many years ago, when I was 18, I was dating a 25 year old guy who I was head over heels about. He earned far more than me and kept promising me a wonderful Christmas present. He even had me look at some lovely designer coats and told me to tell him which one I liked best. I'd never met someone who was (I thought) going to spend so much on me. He then told me that for his present from me, he wanted a very expensive camera and even took me to the camera shop to buy it, to ensure I bought the correct one. It was £150 and, at the time, I was only an office junior on about £70 per week. I used nearly all my savings to buy the camera but thought it was the least I could do as he was buying me such an expensive coat. On Christmas morning when I met up with him to exchange presents, I was surprised when he handed me a small box. I wondered how the lovely coat id chosen had fit into the box. It hadn't, it was a bloody boring pen, not exactly what you want at 18 and so disappointing!

Nightjar33 · 22/11/2024 18:07

My worst present was from a friend who gave me a white t-shirt which smelt badly of sweat.
obviously used, I stopped exchanging gifts after that.
it went in the bin!

I had a boyfriend twice my age when I was 18, we'd nearly dated a year by the time Christmas came round.
For weeks, he kept going on about the amazing Christmas gift he'd got me, I was so excited. I'd bought him some posh aftershave and a nice shaving kit and was looking forward to exchanging presents.
The day came and I giddily opened my present, only to find a money box, a chalk, clown money box... With it's big red shoe chipped... I kind of looked round, bewildered, thinking it was a joke, but it really wasn't! He was so smug and so proud of himself for getting me this perfect gift.
Now, don't get me wrong, I appreciate anything I'm given, I'm not ungrateful at all, I never have been. But it was the whole run up to this gift that was the issue. It was amazing, I'd absolutely love it etc... Talk about a let down! Before anyone jumps in to say maybe it was all he could afford, it wasn't! He had enough money to go to the pub every night for a few beers! Obviously I wasn't high on his list!
I think it "sadly" got broken not long after that!
(We broke up a couple of months later when he tried to get me to get with the barmaid of our local pub! She had the good grace to let me in on what was going on, when I shunned her advances. So I marched back into the bar and promptly poured my pint over his head and stomped out! Never saw him again!)

Omg ! Did we have the same boyfriend I had identical situation me being 19 and him being 37 and trying to get me to have a ménage-a-trois !! He was obsessed (never happened though)

Runki · 22/11/2024 18:18

An ex-boyfriend, many moons ago, kept telling me that he had got me such a good Christmas present, and he couldn't wait to see my face when I opened it. I was so excited. We sat together on Christmas Eve and he said he had to give me the present early as he couldn't wait any longer. I had convinced myself it was some really nice jewellery or an engagement ring or a pair of beautiful shoes... that kind of thing. I opened it and it was a t-shirt. He had had a photograph of a strange bloke he worked with printed on the front. A really strange looking guy with enormous glassss, who I think my boyfriend at the time was slightly obsessed with. I think his name was Barry. I didn't know which emotion to deal with first.....the confusion or the disappointment. He thought it was hysterical and was so pleased with himself. I had bought him an Eddie Izzard video, and his Mum had bought him exactly the same thing. What a disaster. 😂

Itsarecipefordisaster · 22/11/2024 18:24

I was probably in my 30s and my mum bought me a warning triangle for my car. That was my Christmas present, nothing more. I’ve used it twice in the last twenty years. I was gutted but had to pretend I was pleased with it.

Sadieandannasmum · 22/11/2024 18:28

gift pack of packet of loose tea leaves and individual jar of marmalade from my mother, I hate marmalade. Next year I got a pot of eight hour wrinkle cream. Both these from my mother.

BennyBee · 22/11/2024 18:28

Myfirstbornisacollie · 21/11/2024 13:59

Anti wrinkle cream from MIL in my early 30’s erm thanks 🤣

Same. Although it has some competitors. One year she bought me an ice scraper for the car. Another year a bottle of Lynx for girls (bad enough she gets my teen sons Africa every year).

My DM bought me a set of electronic scales for my birthday 6 months after I had a baby; she said she thought it was about time I lost the baby weight. Happy days!

If you live in Leeds, I'd say it's a certainty!!! 🤣

Last year my mum gave me a soft cloche style hat. I put it on and DD said "you look like the lady in the Christmas film." Which didn't seem bad until she clarified "the pigeon lady in Home Alone 2"

BRENDA FLIPPING FRICKER.

Mum said she'd return the hat.

I laughed a lot, and it makes me smile even now. I've had many bad presents but that's definitely the worst one.

I know not the point but, when we were watching the film with out children the other day, I looked up how old Brenda Fricker was when it was made - and she was only 47 (that’s 5 years younger than I am now!!)

MattSmithsBowTie · 22/11/2024 19:16

Dishcloths.

BevMaker · 22/11/2024 19:29

My husband is a really rubbish gift giver . He really hasn’t a clue. One year I got a three tier steamer (!?) So I now generally buy what I like and he wraps it and gives it to me . (And transfers over the money I’ve spent )
This year he’s giving me a Monica Vinader bracelet , Missona earrings, a beige cashmere scarf, and a Neom gift set.
I won’t be disappointed 😂

browneyes77 · 22/11/2024 19:30

We did a secret Santa at work some years ago.

I do wildlife photography, so I can only assume this person had that in mind when choosing a gift…🤨

When I unwrapped my gift, it was this cheap, tacky pearlised shell photo frame. Looked like something you’d get in a bargain bin at a £1 shop in the 80’s.

It was the worst gift in the entire team. Others got diaries, mugs, candles, shot glasses. Decent stuff. I’m assuming the person who got mine didn’t like me very much 😂

And I had to smile and pretend I liked it.

Went straight in the bin when I got home.

Was that used to whack him over the head with?? 🤪

Are they from Lush?

They are really bad for giving you thrush …. Not good at all !!!

rafa85 · 22/11/2024 19:35

My mother in law bought me a jar of olives, with a £2.50 whoops sticker still attached…I don’t even like olives. Considered giving her them back this year!🤣

neverbeenskiing · 22/11/2024 19:36

I don't think this was a christmas gift but when I was about 18 a distant relative who lives abroad once sent me a cuddly toy Jesus. Not even baby Jesus, like cuddly toy adult man Jesus on a cross. It was so, so weird. I'm not even religious!

To make matters worse I had to go and pick it up from the Post Office and pay bloody tax or custom duties or whatever it was. If I'd known what the parcel contained I wouldn't have bothered.

fungibletoken · 22/11/2024 19:48

My best friend from childhood bought me a pair of control pants one Christmas when we were probably about 14 or 15. I was slim at the time and had never really passed comment on weight, but she had a bit of a mean streak and said I'd need them sooner rather than later.

To be fair, the pants have now outlasted our friendship - I cut her loose at the end of secondary school as she turned so unpleasant but kept hold of the pants, and now in my 30s whack them out for the odd wedding or work event😊
