If I was rich I'd have a warm home

I hate the cold! Currently wfh with about 5 layers on and a hot water bottle and a blanket. Have a little electric heater on in this room but rest of the house is v v cold. Going to put oven on in a minute with the door open so I can do the dishes. If I am ever rich I will have a warm home and not be worrying about the cost of heating it! Went to bed at 6 pm last night to save money: feels like being in prison with the long evenings and trying to keep warm!!!

What type of heating have you got?
Have you applied for all relevant homework improvement grants? Got a new boiler? Or using heat storage or something else?
Do you have insulated lining paper?
Added an extra roll of insulation to the roof?
Looked at different energy providers and different tariff?

MeanMrMustardSeed · 21/11/2024 11:51

Do you have gas central heating? Electricity is 3x the cost of gas so if you do, it’d be cheaper to hear your house than rely on electricity for heating the areas you’re in periodically.

spanieleyes22 · 21/11/2024 11:52

Sort of lol. It's a rental with no central heating. There are some electric heaters stuck on the wall on but I do t use them. Just have oil filled radiators in different rooms. Gives food spot heat but the house is never warm all over like you get with central heating

You shouldn't have to be rich to be warm . It should be a basic comfort . I don't know what's happened to this country tbh .

spanieleyes22 · 21/11/2024 11:54

There's no gas in this house

Sorry for typos! Give good spot heat

It's freezing in work as well . I dread going in I end up so cold I can't get warm and then home to a cold house. Usually I get straight into bed and leave teens to fend for themselves !!

We don't have gas central heating either OP, it's crap isn't it. I don't think people realise how much of the country it's just not available in. Our house is often cold because the storage heating is cold by the afternoon. We have a stove and a rayburn which make a huge difference but the price of coal has also sky rocketed.

Georgieporgie29 · 21/11/2024 11:58

The heated blankets are very good. I put mine on my sofa like a cover and switch it on then have another blanket over my legs and it’s nice and toasty with no other heating on.

poshfrock · 21/11/2024 12:00

I'm the same. In a rental with no gas. Storage heaters only. I'm wfh with a blanket and hot water bottle. I left STBEXH in September and now paying mortgage and rent so absolutely skint at present. Electric is on a meter too so I just keep watching it tick down in horror every day.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 21/11/2024 12:00

No gas in our village either, just electric radiators (albeit very swish modern ones). I layer up in clothes and try to keep moving as much as possible, but I've just had to turn on the living room radiator because the dog was shivering (no idea why she won't just curl up under her blanket on the sofa).

I've also got a logburner but that's very fuel heavy and I can't afford to buy lots of logs and have nowhere to store them, so I only run that occasionally and mostly over Christmas (it does make the place warm and look festive).

Doggymummar · 21/11/2024 12:03

My heated poncho died yesterday - horror. I was going to do without, but today it's started snowing. I've caved and ordered a new one thank god for black Friday sales ( probably Amazon not God)

hattie43 · 21/11/2024 12:06

@spanieleyes22

If you are in a rented property all houses / flats have to be a C rated EPC by 2030.
This should help with the cold . Having said that for some older properties the landlord may just stop renting out because of the costs in increasing the rating .

StarCourt · 21/11/2024 12:32

I live in a ground floor flat that also only has electric heating. no gas supply at all. It's minus one outside here currently and I have caved and put the radiators on for the first time today. My monthly electric bill for a 2 bed flat with 2 people living in it is horrific, I also WFH and have been layering up and wearing fingerless gloves and a heated blanket and going to bed early. Sometimes though you just need to be warm

SerenePeach · 21/11/2024 12:34

I can't imagine how difficult it is to heat a house without central heating!

Are the wall electric radiators energy hungry?

dollyop · 21/11/2024 12:47

No tips on heating (my thermostat says 13.5 right now) but I strongly recommend Uniqlo Heattech Ultra Warm base layer and leggings, plus wool socks. That and a down jacket/gilet helps a lot.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 21/11/2024 13:21

We have storage heaters. Modern ones, new 18 months ago, but still crap & expensive to run. Rented so can't replace.
Had just the one in the hallway as it's been -7 here (rural N Scotland). £8 per day just for that, on top of my normal useage ( £3.50 - £5 per day).
It's ridiculously expensive, inefficient & inconvenient.

Lucozq · 21/11/2024 13:25

I'm the same OP.

I'm lucky enough to be in a large council property, but it's old with huge windows and I can't afford to heat it.

I've had to put the heating on the last few days when kids get home as it's been minus 1! I'm dreading my bill :(

LisaD1 · 21/11/2024 13:27

So sorry to read this.

many moons ago as a skint single mum i opted for calor gas heaters. Not sure what they’re like these days but they used to keep our home nice and toastie.

shellyleppard · 21/11/2024 13:27

Have you asked your energy supplier fot a review??? I did with octopus and they sent me out a free electric blanket and gave me a standing charge payment holiday x

Sunshineandrainbow · 21/11/2024 13:31

I hear you
I am in a small terraced house with one storage heater in kitchen.
Nothing upstairs although stairs are in lounge so heat rises. We put on a bar heater in the evenings to try and warm it up but I tend to just go to bed.

I have found wearing my oodie really helps.

Anonym00se · 21/11/2024 13:50

Bit of a digression, but I’ve noticed recently that it’s not just our homes that are freezing. I went out for coffee yesterday and everyone in there was sitting in their big coats, even while eating. Restaurants and pubs are often very chilly. It feels like there’s nowhere we can go to keep warm, it’s just so bloody expensive!

Araminta1003 · 21/11/2024 14:09

You can purchase heated thermals now, as well as an electric blanket. I think it is cheaper that way, heat the body, not the whole home.

allmycats · 21/11/2024 14:13

Can you just not work from home so you are using your employers heating ?
