to ask if a sandwich filling can be "woke"?

I noticed this story in the Mail today Gen Z are ditching traditional sandwich fillings such as ham & mustard or cheddar in favour of "woke" fillings such as chicken, foreign cheeses or avocado. But how can a sandwich filling be "woke"? IMO the word is now used to describe anything that people don't like.

Now Gen Z are waging war on our sandwiches!

Popular bread manufacturer Allinson's launched its Great British Sandwich Study to lift the lids on the nation's lunchboxes and reveal their changing tastes for the beloved snack.

The woke sandwich is chicken!

I know right ? Like that's an unusual filling !

HoneyButterPopcorn · 21/11/2024 13:29

Foreign cheese? I love cheese (apart from smoked bleugh).

NerdWhoEatsMedlar · 21/11/2024 13:30

Seems to a Daily Mail reporter ate a pre-prepared sandwich for the first time in 40 years and can't cope with the change of options.

JiminaSlump · 21/11/2024 13:38

@TofuTart I did actually google 'what does the daily mail think is woke' to get some examples Grin

They seem to have a whole section! It's a lot of energy to dedicate to something they deride so much!

I've come to the conclusion that anything the Daily Mail thinks is woke is actually pretty decent 😁
Do the Daily Mail like this <insert food stuff/ attitude/etc>
No?
Then we're good to go lol
I think they just throw the word about click bait style to get their demographic of readers wound up.

TulipCat · 21/11/2024 13:49

The only sandwich the Daily Mail approves of must surely be gammon?

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 21/11/2024 14:01

I think of a chicken sandwich as 'retro'.

Why?

Reallybadidea · 21/11/2024 14:19

If a sandwich could be woke then surely it would be vegan and organic? Not chicken or avocado 🙄

I've also found that any company that gets boycotted - Budweiser, Boots etc - is never one that I buy from anyway! Not a stance, just an observation.

I’m pretty sure I ate chicken sandwiches at sixth form from the cheapo sandwich shop over 20 years ago …and avocado wraps from Pret not long after

These sandwich fillings are not new.

What a ridiculous article!

I had a chicken sandwich in 1958!

But the only foreign cheese in the shops was Danish Blue.

Neurodiversitydoctor · 21/11/2024 14:30

I think coronation chicken is definitely retro, I always worry about refrigeration with chicken, my mum gave me chicken sandwiches in my lunch box in the '80s.

StaunchMomma · 21/11/2024 14:31

A sandwich filling cannot be woke the DM can always be relied on to pander to their idiotic readers, who gleefully soak up utter shite like this.

It's nothing short of pathetic.

bigkidatheart · 21/11/2024 14:38

Whats wrong with a good old ham & pease pudding sandwich, or cheese and cucumber lol

NasiDagang · 21/11/2024 14:42

A vegan sandwich with hulled barley and quinoa, that'll be really woke! Chicken sandwich is so meh nothing extraordinary about it.

HarrietBond · 21/11/2024 14:42

Some of our local cafes no longer offer avocado for various ethical reasons so they use mashed peas instead. I wouldn’t want to tell the Mail as I’d feel guilty if anyone expired with apoplexy owing to me.

TooBigForMyBoots · 21/11/2024 14:55

Anything and everything is woke nowadays. Last week vaccinations were woke, now sandwiches are woke as well.

We are living in a world of woke!😱😱😱

crockofshite · 21/11/2024 15:08

'woke' would be anything plant based.

RadioBaBa · 21/11/2024 15:12

I really want some foreign cheese now!

Is cabbage woke now?

Just asking for a friend whose kids don't eat vegetables?Blush

HarrisObviously · 21/11/2024 20:59

TofuTart · 21/11/2024 00:55

It's the Daily Mail, and they're absolutely ridiculous.
Basically "woke" seems to mean anything they don't like. Or anything that's not traditional and war time 1940s era.

The DM hates the tofu eating wokerati, don't forget.

5128gap · 21/11/2024 21:02

None of the gen Zs I know eat sandwiches at all. The ones at work go out and bring back buckets of fried chicken or noodles or heat up something from home in the microwave. My DS either raids the cupboards and takes a big container of rice, beans and veg or if WFH cooks something that uses every utensil we own and most of the ingredients for dinner.

user1467300911 · 21/11/2024 21:04

Gen Z Don’t tend to choose sandwiches IME. They prefer wraps with fried chicken in them.
