Have name changed for this and am posting here for traffic.
I am wondering if anyone has any experience of this and could shed some light as I'm driving myself crazy.
I caught DD talking to herself in the bathroom. She's doesn't know that I was listening. It was a full blown conversation about stuff but I couldn't quite make out what exactly as there is a fan on in there.
I have family history of schizophrenia and psychosis from my dad's side and all sorts of things are running through my head.
She has always done this, even as a young child. But since the last couple of years I thought she had outgrown it but clearly not.
She has a few friends at school and seems to engage in family life ok.

I talk to myself all the time.

Frozensnow · 19/11/2024 17:39

I talk to myself all the time and I don’t have any mental health issues. Some people just do- it’s easier to organise my thoughts somehow if I say them aloud

Shejustkonws · 19/11/2024 17:40

I'm nearly 60 and am doing it now! Perfectly normal

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 19/11/2024 17:41

I'm ancient and I narrate my entire life to myself as I go. People look at me oddly, but they do that anyway...

betterangels · 19/11/2024 17:41

I work through stuff by talking to myself. I wouldn't worry.

doodleschnoodle · 19/11/2024 17:41

Maybe she's doing what I do sometimes when alone. Pretend I'm giving a radio interview about something Grin DH walked in to me once being interviewed by myself about my latest novel (that doesn't exist).

34 and talk to myself all the time. Could be an autistic thing in my case, it’s almost soothing. Sometimes I’ll plan interactions ahead of time that sort of thing, other times it’s just stuff.

doodleschnoodle · 19/11/2024 17:42

Also are you sure she didn't have her phone in there and was leaving a voice note on WhatsApp or something?

lanthanum · 19/11/2024 17:42

It seems more unusual in a teenager, though.
Are you sure she wasn't talking to a mate? My teen would occasionally wander round with an earphone in talking to a friend online.

SummerFeverVenice · 19/11/2024 17:43

Most people talk to themselves in the mirror in the bathroom. It’s usually thinking out loud or role playing how a conversation might go…

Love it 🤗!

doodleschnoodle · 19/11/2024 17:44

Or perhaps practising something from school she has to do! There's loads of explanations really, so I wouldn't be worried.

TheDandyLion · 19/11/2024 17:44

I always talk to myself, it means I get the right answer. I don't have mental issues.

LoveSandbanks · 19/11/2024 17:44

I’ve always talked to myself ever since I was a teen. 56 now and definitely not got schizophrenia.

Plastictrees · 19/11/2024 17:46

People talk to themselves all the time! It is a particular processing style. No links to schizophrenia, they are not even related.

BobbyBiscuits · 19/11/2024 17:47

Lots of people talk to themselves as an internal dialogue, but can often end up speaking aloud in private. It doesn't necessarily mean someone is suffering from severe MH issues. There's also a chance she was on her phone and speaking to someone else? And you just didn't hear?

CeciliaMars · 19/11/2024 17:49

I think muttering the odd phrase or comment to yourself is perfectly normal, but I think having a full-blown conversation is unusual...

GinnyPiggie · 19/11/2024 17:50

I talk to myself all the time - quite often I'm narrating my day in musical style. I'm mad as a crate of badgers though.

ohtowinthelottery · 19/11/2024 17:51

Is she just talking to herself or is she answering herself too?
I talk to myself when I'm doing things, as does me DS. In fact, he's cooking at the moment and I just shouted to ask if he was talking to me or himself as it's hard to tell from the next room.

XWKD · 19/11/2024 17:51

If she has always done this, it could be just a habit now.

lollypopsforme · 19/11/2024 17:54

I used to do this to puzzle out problems by looking at them from multiple points of view when I was younger. I stopped after I finished uni and never had the same academic load again. You'd also have caught me talking to myself when trying to learn lines for shows I was in. I don't have schizophrenia.

Twothinkthat · 19/11/2024 17:58

I think if she had issues with psychosis you would know to be honest. The paranoia is very easy to spot.
