Would you rather die than be locked up forever in prison?

If you were given a life sentence today in prison wouldn't you rather die?

I would, I just could not see the point to life anymore?
What use would I be serving, and I wouldn't be able to stand it!

Depends on the prison facilities/conditions

Lentilweaver · 19/11/2024 12:33

No. I'd try to lead a productive life in prison. Read, teach, join a choir.
All the stuff I do now!

FanofLeaves · 19/11/2024 12:34

No I might finally be able to finish my English literature degree, write a book and get back to a size 10. Much better than just being dead.

would need own room though.

Stopandlook · 19/11/2024 12:34

Probably- I’d be so desperate to be out! But presumably it would be a case of wrongful imprisonment so I’d spend my time fighting my case!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 19/11/2024 12:34

I think where they’re life there’s hope.

Suimai · 19/11/2024 12:42

With no expectations of getting out, I think it’s very possible to lead at least a satisfactory life in prison. Perhaps easier than in some circumstances where a person has been given a long sentence and has to count down the years. Some of the facilities can be very good, you can get a job in prison too. I joined a HMP group on Facebook just out of curiosity, and there’s definitely a lot of people who found/find prison life easier than being on the outside

That's nice for the taxpayers to know.

The prison population isn’t representative of society as a whole: many, if not the majority of people in prison have had incredibly difficult, chaotic lives outside of prison, often struggling to obtain and manage the normal lives most of us take for granted, and the routines and certainties of prison give them a certain amount of security and structure. However decent the facilities might be, it’s ultimately incredibly sad that there are people who say they find being in prison easier than the outside.

tuvamoodyson · 19/11/2024 12:48

Definitely rather die.

ByHardyRubyEagle · 19/11/2024 12:49

I’ve watched Parole recently on BBC, and there was one woman who had committed a crime at the age of 16. Now an adult she managed to get parole, but it struck me how she mentioned needing to assimilate herself back into society gradually because she’d need to watch out for becoming anxious on a busy street and crossing the road. She did seem still like a child but in an adults body, and who knows how she will have adjusted to life on the outside. When you’re institutionalised that’s the price these people pay sometimes, literally having their life taken away.

BitOutOfPractice · 19/11/2024 12:50

I thought this would be an interesting thread but I genuinely didn’t expect “taxpayers” to be brought up quite so soon 🙄

GasPanic · 19/11/2024 12:52

No I'm pretty creative so sure I would find things to do with my time.

It would be the other people in there that would be the problem.

That's your take. Wow.
So you think prison should be a place that is so terrible you want to be dead.
Do you think putting people in such circumstances is actually beneficial in any way? You know the way children who are brought up in shit circumstances tend to then turn into pretty troubled adults, the same is for prisoners.

theriseandfallofFranklinSaint · 19/11/2024 12:55

If absolutely no chance of getting out (like some people in Mexico who have 500+ year sentences) then kill me now.

MorrisZapp · 19/11/2024 12:57

I'd stay alive because I could be there for my son growing up, get visits etc. I couldn't leave this life with him still in it.

cheezncrackers · 19/11/2024 12:57

No chance of getting out? I'd rather die. But then it's often been said that a life sentence (a real life sentence, not a life = 15 years job), is worse than the death penalty.

BeensOnToost · 19/11/2024 13:00

In British prison, id happily take a chance.

gamerchick · 19/11/2024 13:01

Dunno, sounds like a decent retirement plan and you get to pick a person you hate the most to get in there. No bills and what not. Stuff to do. Bosh.

What makes you think your son would even want to visit you, if you were in prison for murder?

AgnesX · 19/11/2024 13:03

Is this a precursor to suggesting the death penalty by any chance.

If you think that death is preferable to a prison sentence then you'd better behave 🙄

Tangerinenets · 19/11/2024 13:04

Yes, 100%.

VivianLea · 19/11/2024 13:04

No, I love being alive. It would be worth it for the few hours a month I got to see my DC.

Lentilweaver · 19/11/2024 13:04

I dont think I would cope with any violence. But I could cope with the small life, perhaps, if I had books and podcasts.

Alibababandthe40sheets · 19/11/2024 13:06

You’d want to have done something particularly heinous to have a whole life sentence and if I did something truly disgusting I would struggle to live with myself but say I was done for a murder I didn’t commit I’d figure out a way to live pretty happily in prison. So long as I can live with myself and my conscience as a person I can make myself happy because I am a very adaptable person with a pretty flexible personality.

Exactly, freedom and privacy is non negotiable
