Would you rather die than be locked up forever in prison?

If you were given a life sentence today in prison wouldn't you rather die?

I would, I just could not see the point to life anymore?
What use would I be serving, and I wouldn't be able to stand it!

OP it completely depends on the prison experience.

Locked up in a cell 24-7 with no contact with family - I'd rather die.

Only locked up in a cell at night, freedom during day to go outside, walk around a bit, read, watch TV, get qualifications, have visits from family, do jigsaws, have cell-mates I got on with, maybe work in some capacity - then I'd rather stay alive.

Amarige · 19/11/2024 14:24

Only if I could be in solitary confinement. I certainly wouldn't want to mix with the other prisoners.

My view may be skewed from watching Prisoner cell block h

I once read a new peice about a Geman woman who committed a minor crime so she would be sent to prison for some peace and quiet, she was so exhausted from looking after her family.

As long as I could get books, I would be ok. Obv not happy to be away from my family but in general womens prisons don't sound quite so horrible. I would hope there would be some people there on my wavelength though.

I would rather die and that’s why my biggest argument of being against the death penalty.

Some people cope well in prison but only because they have to.
And this usually has something to do with hope.

They will do things in prison like behave well, go gym, do higher education etc which helps their mindset/make the time go faster but ultimately they are always thinking about when they get out.

Most of the things they do in prison they have the mindset that it will help them for when they get out.
Just having that mindset can reduce self harm and suicidal thoughts.

If you have no hope and nothing to look forward to then what’s the point.

Prisons are not nice places.
You can have ‘luxuries’ such as an Xbox, gym, free accommodation and food, access to education etc but you are in still in prison where you have absolutely no say over your own life and have to live amongst people who have committed awful crimes, have severe MH issues or personality disorders, have very bad hygiene or are violent and aggressive etc.

Yes I read that, apparantely hygeine isn't good in prison for lots of reasons in prison.

pumpkinpillow · 19/11/2024 14:27

The thought of losing my liberty makes my heart beat rapidly, my hands sweat and my mind close down. I don't think I could cope.
The thought of me then voicing this to officers would maybe land me on suicide watch which might be even worse than at least trying to give it a go.

My father spent time in prison (low security - fraud) so this likely impacts my view.

Tittat50 · 19/11/2024 14:28

This sounds so bad but I actually fantasised very recently about a situation where I was given a choice between life in prison and complete full health and removal of all my illnesses or stay as I am.
I'd choose prison. I would. I think it depends on alot.
I know that wasn't the choice in this example. 😄

ItsVeryHyacinthBucket · 19/11/2024 14:32

100% live. Life is long and there's always hope.

Choosenandenough · 19/11/2024 14:38

If I had my own room I’d be fine.

bakewellbride · 19/11/2024 14:39

Even if I would rather die, it's not about me, my children come first and I'm sure they'd rather I live so they could come and visit me so want to live it is.

stevienicksismyfairygodmother · 19/11/2024 14:46

I would rather be in prison. My daughter worked in a cat B prison for three years (Thameside, next to Belmarsh which is cat A - because it holds terrorists) and says it was comfortable for the inmates. Those on 'good behaviour' have decent living conditions; leather sofas, huge tvs, play stations. They can wear their own clothes. They have those tiny mobile phones.

OutVileJelly1 · 19/11/2024 14:51

To be given a life sentance, i would have had to do something particularly bad

The point therefore being, could I live with myself?

FatArse123 · 19/11/2024 14:58

Some oddly snarky responses, OP. What are you hoping to get across with this thread?

Curiossir · 19/11/2024 12:32

Depends on the prison facilities/conditions

This looks quite comfy (where suicide is rampant)

leather sofas, huge tvs, play stations

None of these remotely appeal to me, and it's sad they are luxuries.

No I might finally be able to finish my English literature degree, write a book and get back to a size 10. Much better than just being dead.

would need own room though.

This made me laugh.
But yet somehow true for me.

Did you mean to say it looks quite comfy?

Twoshoesnewshoes · 19/11/2024 15:33

agree, completely depends on the prison and the other inmates.
if it was fairly clean and warm, other people were ok and not violent, and I could get outside maybe do some gardening- sounds great.

J12030257 · 25/10/2025 08:13

Postmasters chose to kill themselves

They knew they were innocent

There were suicides in Norway too when thousands of people were wrongly convicted of fraud in what became known as the NAV Scandal

Read more about it here https://rett24.no/articles/den-norske-nav-saken-og-et-velkomment-trekk-fra-esa

Im 63 so it would be cheaper than trying to fund a nursing home.
I worked in a men's prison medical centre for 7 years it wasnt so bad. Unless you are a paedophile of course. They tend to get murdered.
