Licking fingers to turn pages

Aibu to think this is revolting and wish people would stop doing it.
We got a new catalogue through the post, one of those with half a dozen or so pages advertising festive outfits, pjs for the kids you know the sort of thing. I put it aside for to look at later, well parent popped round unexpectedly and started flicking through it licking fingers to turn each page 🤢

It got binned the second they left. Dc asked for it this morning as they need to make a collage for school. I told them I threw it out and why. They agreed it was a grim practice and said teachers do it to their papers all the time 🤢 but obviously they can't say anything as then they are the rude one.

AIBU to think people would be a bit more aware of spreading their own body fluids around especially after the pandemic. I wish there was a way you could confront people who do this without seeming like a weirdo germaphobe.

Oh and parent is a bugger for doing this I usually have to hide the Christmas radio Times and let them keep any book they borrow.

Dramatic 🤣

DanielaDressen · 19/11/2024 09:21

It’s a bit gross. I’ve managed to turn pages all my life without the need. 🤷🏻‍♀️

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 19/11/2024 09:22

One of the staff at my pharmacy does this when flicking though prescriptions.

I watch with morbid fascination.

Joolsin · 19/11/2024 09:23

You're absolutely right. There is no defence for doing this. 😤

SidekickSylvia · 19/11/2024 09:23

I had a boss that did this, I got in the habit of using the bottom of the page when I turn it. It's a bit grim, and also...just why?

HumanbyDesign · 19/11/2024 09:24

I put you are being unreasonable but actually only half - the UR bit because it's your family?! Do you not share drinks either? "Vom" seems a bit of an overreaction?! Also if you suffer from dry skin and can't grip paper without any moisture what do you propose? Feels a bit germophobic which is fine for you but not really usual 🤷🏼‍♀️

I think if a complete stranger with bad breath/teeth I might slightly agree internally but would try to have word with myself 😂

HumanbyDesign · 19/11/2024 09:26

Older people do tend towards dryer skin so maybe the reason?

Does it make you feel better too know that people who don't need to do this are able to avoid it as their skin is naturally more "oily" so they are actually leaving their body oils on your pages anyhoo 🤷🏼‍♀️🤣

TulipCat · 19/11/2024 09:29

It's the tiniest amount of moisture, they're not gobbing all over the pages. People everywhere touch loads of things that you subsequently touch, and you suffer no ill effects. I really couldn't get worked up about this.

Nousernameforme · 19/11/2024 09:44

Hadn't seen that Kevin Bridges one so thanks for that.
As for do we share drinks absofuckinglutely not nor cutlery or take bites out of each other's food or eat off others plates the thought makes me gip.

It is spit, it's unnecessary, they may as well wipe snot on the pages. I mean who can't turn a page without spit

OliviaRodrighost · 19/11/2024 09:47

I thought during the pandemic it was made clear that we breathe in moisture that other people breathe out constantly if they are within a few metres of us. So I can’t get worked up about this. It sounds pretty germaphobic and OTT. Especially with the update of angrily stating you would never share drinks with family members. Calm down.

SwedishEdith · 19/11/2024 09:48

I've never ever even thought about this as odd. I had to double check you'd said "parent" as well to understand you meant your own parent. So you threw away a catalogue because your own parent had left a speck of moisture on the corner of a few pages?

Houseplanter · 19/11/2024 09:52

My late Dad did this with his newspaper. I think from when the pages were sort of stuck together where tiny holes were punched in them somewhere in the printing process years ago. Certainly it didn't seem unusual for his generation.

I agree though it's 🤢

SensibleSigma · 19/11/2024 09:53

Drier fingers mean you can’t grip the page with a finger tip. You have to riffle the edges to find something to grip.

Also, nothing is going to breed on dry paper so there’s no risk. Anything they carry is gonna hibernate, and will only make it into your mouth if you lick your finger after turning the page…

The air they sucked into their lungs skimmed through their nostrils and sinuses, went into the lungs, sat there for a few seconds getting all moist, then skimmed the tonsils and nose again on the way out to disperse into the air that you also suck into your lungs. Assuming they are not a mouth breather. Far more icky. Don’t invite them in, next time.

SharpOpalNewt · 19/11/2024 09:55

I have to do it sometimes to open a bag or turn a page.

Rather than stand there for ten minutes faffing about with a bit of polythene.

Though I draw the line at actually spitting on a cloth to clean- I have told my DM off for doing that in my house. I'd rather it was dusty than covered in her spit, or have to hear her spitting while she cleans. Funny as she goes on and on about how disgusting spitting is.

Toomuchleopard · 19/11/2024 10:01

I used to go to a butchers where one of the staff used to wipe her finger on a raw sausage to get it a bit wet to be able to open a poly bag 🤢

zingally · 19/11/2024 10:45

I'm a teacher, and I did it once while looking through a kids work. Said kid then sneered at me and called me a slug.

One of my favourite insults of all time!

MrsSkylerWhite · 19/11/2024 10:51

Postage stamps must really freak you out.

AnonymousBleep · 19/11/2024 10:53

I absolutely hate this, it's gross, and YANBU.

Stretchedresources · 19/11/2024 10:55

Yanbu. I saw a pharmacist doing this with the prescriptions in the box recently 🤢.

Blarn · 19/11/2024 10:56

I'm not sure I'd do this with someone else's book but I have very dry hands so have to with my own papers. Sometimes my phone screen won't even register my touch!
