Licking fingers to turn pages

Aibu to think this is revolting and wish people would stop doing it.
We got a new catalogue through the post, one of those with half a dozen or so pages advertising festive outfits, pjs for the kids you know the sort of thing. I put it aside for to look at later, well parent popped round unexpectedly and started flicking through it licking fingers to turn each page 🤢

It got binned the second they left. Dc asked for it this morning as they need to make a collage for school. I told them I threw it out and why. They agreed it was a grim practice and said teachers do it to their papers all the time 🤢 but obviously they can't say anything as then they are the rude one.

AIBU to think people would be a bit more aware of spreading their own body fluids around especially after the pandemic. I wish there was a way you could confront people who do this without seeming like a weirdo germaphobe.

Oh and parent is a bugger for doing this I usually have to hide the Christmas radio Times and let them keep any book they borrow.

I put you are being unreasonable but actually only half - the UR bit because it's your family?! Do you not share drinks either? "Vom" seems a bit of an overreaction?! Also if you suffer from dry skin and can't grip paper without any moisture what do you propose? Feels a bit germophobic which is fine for you but not really usual 🤷🏼‍♀️

I think if a complete stranger with bad breath/teeth I might slightly agree internally but would try to have word with myself 😂

“Do you not share drinks either”

No, never. 🤢

Bigcat25 · 19/11/2024 19:04

Why not just tell her it gross? I feel you can be very blunt with immediate family.

rommymummy · 19/11/2024 19:08

So gross, my parent also does this, I always told them it was gross.

I use a rubber thimble when needed at work.

Maria1979 · 19/11/2024 19:10

It's really disgusting. Why not just lick on the pages while you're at it. I haven't seen many people do it but when I do I have to turn away because my facial expression would be quite revealing.🤢😖

Take it oral sex is out of the question?
😉😁😁.

I think coughing into your hands is worse because then you touch everything. Coughing into your elbow/shoulder is better.

TiramisuQueenoftheFairies · 19/11/2024 20:31

Haven't they read / seen "the Name of the Rose" (Umberto Eco)?
If not, get the family culprit a copy of the DVD for Christmas : I guarantee they won't ever do it again!

People on the tills at Tesco used to lick their fingers to open the bags back in the day. I always thought it was grim

Yep came on to say exactly this, jeez they were very very lick finger happy it was disgusting! 🤮

my local takeaway has a very inventive way of combatting the problem. On the counter next to the bags they have an upended cucumber and wipe their finger across the top to wet it to open the bag - always makes me smile 🙂

But they then probably use if for the next days salad though so…. 😩

Pages don't seem to need it as much these days (perhaps they use a different kind of paper) but yes, I put my hand up and admit, I will use a dampened finger to turn awkward ones and always have. Ditto opening plastic bags. I'm really not going to go and get a dampened sponge or buy a rubber thimble thing which will undoubtedly go missing when I need it when I have a perfectly good solution so readily available.

It's the tiniest amount of moisture, they're not gobbing all over the pages. People everywhere touch loads of things that you subsequently touch, and you suffer no ill effects. I really couldn't get worked up about this.

This!

They are not spitting on the pages! Bonkers.

BeatriceAndLottie · 19/11/2024 21:42

I think it’s absolutely revolting too OP! Always pains me when older relatives do it… Seems to be a dying fashion, I hope!

SleepFinally · 19/11/2024 21:44

I remember seeing a very glamorous lady doing this with a magazine when I was a kid. I thought it looked so grown up and sophisticated so I forced myself to try and do it until.it became habit!!

It took me until early 40s to realise how gross it is!! and try and make myself not do it! I still do it sometimes out of habit!!

vegaspotty · 19/11/2024 21:47

Well I have never even given it any thought..thank you OP for giving me something to keep me awake tonight !

TheBigSalami · 19/11/2024 21:49

It is utterly revolting, but I can’t say I’ve seen anyone do it for years.

Name of the rose, monks are dying and no one knows why, the corners of a book, have been laced with poison. Licking fingers to turn pages gets the poison into their mouths.

Yup, someone upthread suggested putting chili powder on the corners, which while unlikely to be fatal, is a similar idea.

Postage stamps must really freak you out.
**
People haven’t licked stamps for about twenty years…

Shows how old my stamps are 😁
