AIBR to ask work if I can work remotely today ( chucking it down with snow currently)

It’s heavy snow and I have a long commute. Is it reasonable to ask them if I can work remote? ( I am able to work remotely and do so once a week).

Sounds like a sensible request if you anyway have remote working sometimes.

SquigglePigs · 19/11/2024 06:13

Not sure what that "anyway" is meant to be!

Skate76 · 19/11/2024 06:15

I've just got up and decided to WFH due to the snow. People in this country have no snow tyres and most don't know how to drive in Icy/snowy weather. You'd be taking your life in your hands, there have already been 2 serious road accidents near us overnight, stay home 💐

DieStrassensindimmernass · 19/11/2024 06:20

It would seem a reasonable time to work from home, if you can. You might need a rethink if the weather continues though.

ImJustAGirlInACountrySong · 19/11/2024 06:22

How many inches do you have?!?

fiorentina · 19/11/2024 06:22

Of course, if travel is dangerous or problematic then seems sensible.

InWithThePlums · 19/11/2024 06:22

Why not if you are able too? Seems sensible!

It’s snowed heavily in north west England.

Gizlotsmum · 19/11/2024 06:28

The company I work for is really supportive of this, they would rather staff were safe. Our operational side need to be out but they are given additional breaks in really bad weather

Hazeby · 19/11/2024 06:36

If the advice is essential travel only or public transport is disrupted then yes. If everything is running normally, then no.

NoWordForFluffy · 19/11/2024 06:40

I've decided to WFH. We have settled snow and -1° temps and I have a 2 mile walk to the station. Our local train service said last night to expect delays and cancellations this morning, so I'm just not going to try!

GrazeConcern · 19/11/2024 06:43

Of course it’s sensible. Driver safety is a big thing where I work, people would be encouraged to only attend if necessary.

Problems caused by snow can be very local. We live on a cul de sac which can quickly become impassable if snow settles yet the main road will be clear.

We haven't had problems with 4WD cars but not everyone has that luxury.

Werecat · 19/11/2024 06:54

I wouldn’t ask - I’d just inform than that driving conditions are not safe and so I’ll be wfh.

She will still be doing her job but this way she can guarentee she will start on time.

Underthemagnificentbeechtree · 19/11/2024 06:56

@AnglesMortes she’s going to work - from home. She’ll likely get more done at home than with a long commute + snow delays and she’ll eliminate all risk to herself from driving in dangerous conditions and reduce the risk for those who have to go out.

Moonopoly · 19/11/2024 06:56

@AnglesMortes Absolutely no need for that comment. Perfectly reasonable to ask to work remotely if it doesn’t affect business. Not OP’s fault that not everyone is able to do that…oh and snowflake is such a passé phrase

😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣
It's so passé to point out that passé is passé

Moonopoly · 19/11/2024 06:59

@AnglesMortes think you need some hobbies

seaduck · 19/11/2024 07:00

@AnglesMortes surely it's better that those who have the option stay at home and don't clog up traffic and public transport for those who do? What a silly attitude. Obviously not everyone can do it, but it's not about work ethic at all, they are still working

TickingAlongNicely · 19/11/2024 07:01

Less cars put on the roads the better. Even experienced drivers in suitable cars.

I think you need to stop thinking that hobbies are a universal panacea

I imagine it would be better for the roads and public transport if there were fewer cars out today, skidding and getting into accidents—only those who have no choice but to make an essential journey should be on the roads. The OP not working from the office is not linked to her work ethic whatsoever.

FiftynFooked · 19/11/2024 07:03

It's not too bad where we are but I've still messaged my team and told them to stay at home. Traffic will be horrendous and there's no point battling in unless they have to.
