AIBR to ask work if I can work remotely today ( chucking it down with snow currently)

It’s heavy snow and I have a long commute. Is it reasonable to ask them if I can work remote? ( I am able to work remotely and do so once a week).

I think it should be a 'I'm going to wfh' conversation, put the onus on your manager to say no, which I doubt will be the case.

Yes yes, much better for those who have to be physically in the workplace if the roads and no doubt sparse public transport are as full as possible.

Ffs.

The OP will be working from home - what others do is irrelevant. Nice outdated views there.

Why so nasty ? The work ethic here is that rather than coping with the inevitable impact of bad weather on a long commute, OP will get more done if she works from home. You clearly consider this the soft option for some reason, while most of us would say that it’s the sensible choice in the circumstances. Maybe if you drag yourself out of the 1950s you’ll see that WFH has been a game changer in many ways - no, not everyone has that option but that doesn’t mean those who do have any less of a work ethic, or deserve to be treated with such vitriol.

If your job can be done from home then why wouldn't you?
It doesn't mean you have no work ethic.

My boss has just text me to suggest we move our weekly catch up online. He's going into the office but appreciates that travel can be tricky for me due to where I live.

I'll still do a full days work.

waterrat · 19/11/2024 07:20

@AnglesMortes sorry you feel so bitter - very normal in most jobs to have some WFH now.

Rosscameasdoody · 19/11/2024 07:21

Moonopoly · 19/11/2024 06:59

@AnglesMortes think you need some hobbies

Why ? She has the ultimate hobby - keyboard warrior. Hours of entertainment, no risk and always at someone else’s expense.

Yes, that is on my passort as my occupation
Well done, Batman. V. Perceptive

She will still be doing her job but this way she can guarentee she will start on time.

Which is why my line manager told me to WFH today.

DD will have to go in as she has an essential job that can't be done from home.

Viviennemary · 19/11/2024 07:25

Yes. Snow is a very good reason to work from home if you can.

myrtleWilson · 19/11/2024 07:26

Is Batman particularly known for his perception? Your posts are incoherent @AnglesMortes including your ridiculous snowflake jibe

TheWoodpecker · 19/11/2024 07:26

GnomeDePlume · 19/11/2024 06:52

Problems caused by snow can be very local. We live on a cul de sac which can quickly become impassable if snow settles yet the main road will be clear.

We haven't had problems with 4WD cars but not everyone has that luxury.

When I lived in Scotland, if you were on a dodgy road then it was expected you would leave your car somewhere that you would be able to get it out. Where I live now, no one does that. It's just different expectations. All the schools round me (northern England) are closed but if they had closed for this much snow where I grew up we really would have missed many days of school - it's a different mindset. Probably better gritting/snow clearance up there as well!

Throw your scarf on, darling. And don’t forget your snow boots. It’s going to be an arduous walk to your driveway, where your car will need de-icing, and you’ll need to save all your strength for scowling and huffing when you glimpse someone through a window working from their laptop in the warm. Damn that vile WiFi that enables fast connection speeds to allow video calls and the sending of large files via email. Damn them all to hell.

Jesus. If she is wfh then she's hardly letting colleagues down is she?

No snow for me where I am today but in severe weather (wind/storms/snow etc) my bosses absolutely endorse wfh - would rather employees are safe

Elphame · 19/11/2024 07:33

Not at all.I used to

I had a long rural commute through a lot of minor roads, and a car that is built for sunnier climes. It is downright dangerous in snow as I found out.

Any hint of the possibility of snow at either end of the journey and I was WFH long before WFH was a thing.

Oh really? It can be so hard to tell with threads about remote working. The mere mention of the subject is often a stupid klaxon.

Wasn’t aware that Batman was known for his powers of perception - Sherlock usually has that accolade. But the compliment’s appreciated, thanks.😇

They clearly state they can work from home. So a insight being applied would deduce it isn't a front facing role. But no you go ahead and make snide remarks to people making reasonable decisions.

RampantIvy · 19/11/2024 07:43

I now have to go out in it to take DD to work as her train has been cancelled 😔

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 19/11/2024 07:44

I'm in Oxford for work, came up last night in a jacket not coat. Woken up to 3cm and it is coming down fast. I need to get to my office which is in the middle of nowhere so don't think that'll be happening.

Well, you are swearing on another thread you are on today, and you have come on this thread and been immediately rude for no reason. No matter what is going on in your life, you do not have to come on here and be so goading and argumentative for no reason.
