Keeping an item a shop sent you by accident for free?

I know MN normally takes quite a hard line on this stuff….

but what’s the consensus on a large big name retailer sending you two items when you paid for one? Say hypothetically it’s clothing and they sent you 2 of the item in different sizes. Sizing is out so the original size you ordered doesn’t fit anyway. Would you return the item for a refund and keep the other one they sent you for free? And consider it your lucky day since you’re financially struggling at the moment leading up to Christmas.

just hypothetically obviously

Keep both. Sell one on eBay in a few weeks' time.

How dishonest.

Sephora sent me the wrong order. I kept it. Didn’t tell because I ain’t no grass.

Well I wish you luck with that.

YearningForAWinteryWinter · 19/11/2024 01:41

I got double the order of expensive honey from a small company. I felt bad so told them but they told me to keep it.

Vettrianofan · 19/11/2024 01:45

This happened to me recently. Ikea order. Got one item in the box I hadn't ordered but we kept it.

RogueFemale · 19/11/2024 01:49

If it's a fast fashion brand then I think they just bin returns, so I wouldn't feel guilty about not returning and would give the item that didn't fit to a charity shop.

I ordered a mattress topper from BrandAlley for my DD who was a student at Newcastle University. It never arrived, so I queried it. They came back to say that the Evri delivery guy reported that he had left it "under a bush" - this was student halls!! DD checked it with flatmates/security etc but no-one had her parcel.

I complained to BrandAlley who gave me a £15 voucher and refunded me for the cost of the item. Unaccountably, someone at BrandAlley then gave me another voucher, this time for £10. I ordered another mattress topper. I ended up returning that one because weeks later the original turned up! So I got a free mattress topper and £25 credit! I reckoned that was just about fair after all the hassle!

Years ago though, I ordered something from Debenhams and a couple of other items I didn't order came in the delivery. I contacted them and they were so unhelpful. I said that the items were there should they wish to arrange their collection, but they never did.

OhNotNow · 19/11/2024 02:03

I keep stuff that's sent to me by mistake.
I don't bother informing the till staff if they've given me too much change, undercharged me or not scanned something.
Zero fucks given.

Magpie50 · 19/11/2024 02:05

I usually own up and I'm rarely told to keep things....mostly they want them back!

Although recently I ordered a couple of boxes of cat food and instead of 1 box they sent 10!
The following day another box of 10 arrived!
The order def said 2 boxes and that was what they charged me for.
Cats were very happy!

CoastalCalm · 19/11/2024 03:13

Check they have the same code as sometimes sizes have different codes found this out when returning a pair of trousers to M&S with the receipt for a smaller pair I’d bought

romdowa · 19/11/2024 03:32

I once ordered a book online, got an email a few days later to apologise that the book was out of stock and I'd be getting a refund. A week later the book turns up 😅 it was a £50 book so I rang the company and was basically told we've no record of you being sent this book , we can't take payment for it. Enjoy !

Well legally they have 6 years to chase a debt so you'd have to keep the one you keep pristine for 6 years just incase they ask for it back, or be prepared to pay.

Ha! Don’t be ludicrous!

HappydaysArehere · 19/11/2024 03:47

Bought a cover to go with an iPad as a special present. Said it had been put through the door but we hadn’t received it. Contacted them to explain why we needed it. They refunded me so I could order again which I did immediately. Next day neighbour appeared with it. ContactedAmazon and explained but was told to keep it as under a certain price.

getahhtmapub · 19/11/2024 05:29

A company once delivered me the huge expensive three piece outdoor suite I'd ordered but missing one chair.
I called them and they apologised and said a replacement would be sent.
The next day the same delivery driver turns up with the missing chair that he forgot to deliver.
A few days later a whole new three piece suite turned up.
The next day another chair arrived.
Awash with garden furniture I called the company to let them know and they said they would contact me to arrange collection. They never did and the boxes sat in the garage for 6 months until I decided that they would go perfectly at the bottom at the garden and I've had them ever since.
I'm glad I told them though. No guilt sitting on them!

NotSorry · 19/11/2024 06:07

We went through a period of our credit card being cloned on more than one occasion. I’d ordered a couple of expensive T-shirts and because my card has been stopped (again!) I could see I hadn’t been charged for said T-shirts. I phoned the company to explain and try to pay. Was sent to many different departments before ending up with the head of finance and tried to explain it to him. He was very rude and told me it couldn't possibly happen.

By this time, I was done with the company so I said “ok no worries, if you discover you haven’t been paid please do contact me”

never heard back, never paid

roastiepotato · 19/11/2024 06:13

I usually let them know and they say to keep it

IBlameTheDog · 19/11/2024 06:18

I ordered a fleece once and got an expensive pair of pyjamas instead, worth way more.

I let them know and asked them to collect and exchange and they said I had to go to a post office (45 minute round trip for me) to return their mistake.

I didn't. Luckily they were in my size. Wearing them right now actually!

nicky2512 · 19/11/2024 06:30

When dd was starting university my dad bought her a MacBook. Two arrived separately. I phoned immediately and was told one would be collected. No one came. Phoned again to be told same thing.
after a few weeks I got fed up with it sitting by our front door and went to an Apple Store (not particularly close to us).
I explained what had happened and was looked at as if I was completely mad for bringing it.

ParanormalNorman · 19/11/2024 06:40

Not quite related but in once got some free Ray Bans. They arrived in the post, brand new but with - literally - no way of identifying where they came from. Odd.

Tadpolecat · 19/11/2024 06:54

I had this once when I was still living with my parents. The decision was to keep it safe somewhere until they contacted me for the second one back- they did!

GoFaster83 · 18/11/2024 21:51

This is actually the best thing I've seen on the Internet today. So utterly random! I'm sorry, but if I knew you, I'd be annonymously sending you themed Mr Potatoheads at random intervals for the duration of your life.

Haha, that would be hilarious! 😆

TwinklyAmberOrca · 19/11/2024 06:59

healthybychristmas · 18/11/2024 23:53

That's absolute nonsense. This isn't a debt.

Yes it is.

It's the LAW. By keeping the item sent by accident, the OP is deemed to have accepted the goods so the money is owed which is therefore a debt.

Companies have 6 years to chase a debt before it becomes statute barred.

getahhtmapub · 19/11/2024 07:01

Ordered 20 drawer handles. Received 20 pairs of safety goggles.

Told to keep the goggles. I don't have use for one pair never mind 20 so I have gave them away to some local builders on Facebook.

getahhtmapub · 19/11/2024 07:09

@TwinklyAmberOrca nope. Not according to the Consumer Protection Regulations it most definitely isnt!
