Still unreasonable in my opinion.

Well, while Remembrance still matters to a lot of the population then I'm afraid that one will just have to be dealt with.

8am to 11 every Sunday morning 7pm to 10 pm every Thursday and whenever they can in between

What time is the service?
There is usually at least one service between 8 and 11 and the bells won't ring through that.

It's very, very, very, very unusual for any church to ring the bells continuously for three hours before the first service-almost unbelievable in fact.

AgnesX · 17/11/2024 11:11

I'm sorry for your situation but the church was there before you and will be there long after you've gone.

Are earmuffs/ noise cancelling ear headphones an option if you can't go out.

Oldnproud · 17/11/2024 11:15

And as a non church goer, I love the sound. It feels very specifically ‘English’. Think Miss Marple and Midsomer Murders…

Hmm - maybe anxiety caused by those incessant bells is what lead to all those murders ... 😈

Yeah no shit?

I'm just stating that I agree it's unreasonable as OP has asked for opinions. I have not stated that my opinion will stop the bell ringing from occurring.

thatsawhopperthatlemon · 17/11/2024 11:18

Complaining about a church ringing its bells is akin to moving next door to a pig farm and complaining about the smell.

PedantScorner · 17/11/2024 11:19

... be aloud to ring those damn bells... The irony.

FloralGums · 17/11/2024 11:19

I love to hear church bells. They won’t ring for long periods very often, it’s probably a special event.

snowmichael · 17/11/2024 11:19

You're not just being unreasonable, but bloody, stupidly, selfishly unreasonable
The churches have almost all been there long before you, and will be there long after
Why did you move somewhere near a church?

zingally · 17/11/2024 11:20

The church was there long before you were. Get some headphones, and some treatment for your anxiety.

Personally I find the sound of church bells really soothing and peaceful.

MyDeftDuck · 17/11/2024 11:23

Yes, sorry to disappoint but a church should be ALLOWED to ring the bells - the LOUDER the better!
I am sure they don't ring them throughout the night and if the bell ringers have a special event coming up - perhaps a wedding and the bride has requested the church bells - they will need to practice.
It is a tough life when you choose to live in the vicinity of a church and as long as you can hear the bells you know you're alive!

BlueonBlues · 17/11/2024 11:23

Isxmasoveryet · 17/11/2024 09:13

Due to circumstances didnt have a choice on location and was unaware they would ring for several hours at a time due to anxiety and stress it drives me mad and at times feels like torture last Sunday was 5'5 hours of it non stop it over 3 hours twice a week

The bells rang for 5 and a half hours non stop?

Come on!

No church bells ring for that long. The bell ringers couldn't do it (unless they're on some rota system.)

Seriously, if you have an issue with it, go and talk to the vicar and ask if they can make changes.

Our local C of E church has a bell ringing practise once a week for about an hour.

BlueonBlues · 17/11/2024 11:25

Having read all of your posts, you're exaggerating the timings.

Unless you're living next to a cathedral perhaps.

Are you?

Funnywonder · 17/11/2024 11:26

Yes, fair point @Nanny0gg. I suddenly realised after I hit 'post' that there would be practice sessions🙂 But 5 and a half hours? That would drive me bonkers. I can't decide whether they're the world's worst or best bell ringers!

5FeetToBeExact · 17/11/2024 11:26

Church bells are causing anxiety and stress?

Jesus this generation of people are weird.

sharpclawedkitten · 17/11/2024 11:27

SausageRoll2020 · 17/11/2024 09:09

I'm going to take a gamble here and presume that the church was there before you moved in nearby...

YABU

Yes I suspect that might be worth putting £1 on Grin

Spuddling · 17/11/2024 10:27

Phone the police. Antisocial behaviour 🤣

Sorry. Just read you are in a hostel. Assumed you had bought a cottage near a church and was moaning.

Hope things improve for you

Funnywonder · 17/11/2024 11:31

What's with all the nasty little shitheads on here, correcting the OP's spelling and grammar? Seriously, get a life and stop using other people's mistakes or possible learning difficulties to give yourself a sense of superiority. The OP may not even have English as a first language. Think before you make yourself look like a dick.

BlueonBlues · 17/11/2024 11:35

Isxmasoveryet · 17/11/2024 09:13

It hostel so not brought

You're living in a hostel?

Does anyone else in the hostel have an issue with it?

If it really gets you down, maybe go out when it's happening, or talk to whoever is in charge of the hostel and they can talk to the clergy.

I can't see how they ring for 3 hours on a Sunday morning.
Usually, it's a few minutes before the service, then they stop and would start again for the later service (I used to attend church a lot.)

This assumption that everyone has a choice of where to live, really annoys me.
I moved into a flat, next to a church. A run down, single glazed, town centre, badly converted home, at the bottom end of the private rental market. It was the only landlord willing to rent to a lone parent leaving DV refuge, with no references and no money.

The bells rang every 15 minutes, 24/7. At midnight the whole of the 4 quarters rang followed by 12 individual 'doings'. The sound really carries, in the still of night.

Having said that, I got used to it, and when we moved to a village, I couldn't sleep because of the silence!
Maybe you will get used to it.

It was a beautiful church, so despite being an atheist, I went to look around. I joked to the vicar, that anyone else making that level of noise, at that frequency, would have an ASBO slapped on them! We became 'friends' and he and his family babysat my son, when I got back on my feet, and started work. My son and me were made very welcome, and were given support, eg, use of the office phone, to claim benefits.

Every New Year's Day, we had to wrap up and go out, usually down to the river, as the bells rung constantly, for 6 hours, and it did become unbearable.
I've heard they are now switched off overnight, which made me a bit sad.
Just thinking out loud, here!

Yes, sleep deprivation causes anxiety and distress, especially if it is long term.

Maddy70 · 17/11/2024 11:40

Im an atheist... the church was there before you moved near to it I presume?

Why should they have to stop a centuries old tradition

I also live near a church. Love the sound of the bells

crumblingschools · 17/11/2024 11:42

@5FeetToBeExact if the OP is in a hostel I assume they had anxiety to start with

What a patronising post.

Many people do not have a choice, as to where they live.
And, yes, many church bells are on a timer, so they ring every 15 minutes, 24/7, like the one I have described. So, that's the full 'tune' followed by 12 'dongs' every night, at midnight.
They then ring to call the flock to services, for weddings etc, and for practice.
In my experience, New Year's Day was 6 continuous hours.

Yes, sleep deprivation causes anxiety and distress, especially if it is long term.

If a person has sleep deprivation because they are woken up at 8am i’d suggest they either need to look in to their own lifestyle choices or consult their doctor.
