Sorry to be a pedant, but church bells don't ring tunes, like twinkle twinkle little star. Carillon, which are mechanical, do.

Having read all of your posts, you're exaggerating the timings.

Unless you're living next to a cathedral perhaps.

Are you?

So, knowing only what you're been told, you're accusing OP of lying? Because her experience is not the same as yours?
I lived next to a church, not a cathedral, and my experience echoed OP's.

Spuddling · 17/11/2024 11:49

FFS people. Just stop. OP is in a tough situation.

If a person has sleep deprivation because they are woken up at 8am i’d suggest they either need to look in to their own lifestyle choices or consult their doctor.

8am? I'm talking about every 15 minutes, culminating in 12 loud songs in the dead of night.

Fireworknight · 17/11/2024 11:53

Not five hours but they can ring for three. Happened in my town recently. They sounded lovely.

“A peal is a non-stop sequence of a minimum of 5,000 changes where each sequence is different and cannot be repeated on seven or more bells. This takes around three hours to ring and is the bell ringers' equivalent of a marathon, requiring concentration and stamina to complete the peal.”

Hence 'tunes', to show that I know it's not the correct term, but that I don't know what is.

I love church bells but have never in all my 55 years known them to ring for hours on end?

The worst place I ever lived was right next to a busy junction which seemed to get constantly gridlocked.

Give me church bells any day over loudly tooting car horns and drivers shouting at one another.

Discombobble · 17/11/2024 11:57

Go and join in - they are usually pretty friendly and you may learn to appreciate them! Church bells remind me of my childhood and hearing them makes me happy. Or buy some earplugs

Peachbubble · 17/11/2024 11:58

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the sound of church bells being rung. In fact I've been known to stand out in the garden on a Thursday evening just to hear them. Opened the bedroom window this morning, just to hear them. And this is from someone who hates noise, but I find church bells to be very soothing.

MarketValveForks · 17/11/2024 09:35

Of course you are being unreasonable.
If you don't like the sound it's very simple to move to somewhere out of earshot. The church was there for hundreds of years before you came along.

Oh, the cluelessness of privilege.

Except they DON'T ring for hours on end on a Sunday. 🙄 20 minutes tops.

Get a grip @Isxmasoveryet and move somewhere that is at least a mile from a Church. (No doubt you will still find something to gripe about!)

Calliopespa · 17/11/2024 11:59

Sorry you are in a tough situation oP.

However, I think you are taking out other frustrations on the bells. Church bells are up there among my very favourite sounds, like the thwack of tennis rackets on a lazy summer’s afternoon, burbling brooks, or the sound of the toaster popping ( and the smell of hot buttered toast) on waking.

Shittyproblem · 17/11/2024 11:59

There's a big difference between Sunday a.m., the occasional wedding or funeral, & a practice session, versus what the OP has described.
5.5 hours of it is totally unreasonable.

Except OP has stated she is in a hostel. You don’t generally get to pick and choose.

SookyFeline · 17/11/2024 12:02

Oh grow up Op.

I’m afraid I’m not very accepting of it being 5.5 hours with no stops. Have you ever tried ringing a church bell? I have, and unless they have a team of Olympians up that bell tower it’s intermittent at the worst,

Hello there, did you read all of the OPs posts?

Intermittent? So, every now and then, OP gets a few minutes relief, and starts to hope that might be the end of it. Then it starts again, and OP has no idea how long for?

Oh, the cluelessness of privilege.

What an utterly ridiculous and uniformed thing to write. What has ‘privilege’ got to do with it?
You need to get the rather large box of chips of your shoulder.

timenowplease · 17/11/2024 12:07

Funny, I heard church bells this morning for the first time since being in this house and I thought it sounded lovely.

YABU.

Headinthesand21 · 17/11/2024 12:08

Sorry, but you are being utterly unreasonable.

Ive rung church bells in the past as my BFs Dad was a vicar, growing up. It’s actually a very physical activity and there is no way that they could, or would, be rung for five hours. It would be a few minutes at the most.

NewGreenDuck · 17/11/2024 12:09

I assume that last week it was Remembrance Sunday so maybe more ringing. Most will ring for early morning Eucharist, ( matins) and then for morning worship at about 10.30 and then evensong. So you could get 3 sessions of bell ringing. Other churches might do different things. And the vicar / priest might have to do services at different parishes so each week could be different.
I really do mean this kindly OP, but if it's making you anxious it is something to discuss with your doctor.

Calliopespa · 17/11/2024 12:09

Lellamir · 17/11/2024 12:05

Even then 5.5 hours is a long time. It’s cold up those towers. I genuinely do not think this will be a regular weekly thing. It was likely linked to Remembrance if it was that long a session.

I am sorry oP is having a tough time, however I think this is something that needs working round. Ear plugs, visiting a friend, popping to a late night supermarket?
