Whilst I have empathy for your current situation (and as a fellow anxiety sufferer), I think yabvu.

So many of our traditions are slowly fading away and I would be very sad if church bell ringing became a thing of the past, it reminds me of my childhood and I find it very comforting.

What is it you don't understand?

I guess we're not all blessed with the same level of understanding, and it's not @GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER 's fault if she can't understand a simple five word phrase with a spelling mistake.

HelpMeGetThrough · 17/11/2024 10:07

8am to 11 every Sunday morning

Surely that means they are ringing them throughout the church service.

BoobyDazzler · 17/11/2024 10:07

Of course yabu, but I think you know that.

mooncloud1 · 17/11/2024 10:08

I hope all the posters who haven't bothered to read the OP's updates never find themselves in such a situation.

It sounds stressful, likely heightened by your current living arrangement, I hope things get better for you soon, but unfortunately I don't think the bell ringing will stop.

8am to 11 every Sunday morning

Surely that means they are ringing them throughout the church service.

There's usually an 8am service and a 10/1030 service so yes, this reads like they're ringing throughout both.

Proudtobeanortherner · 17/11/2024 10:08

This is a joke, right?

midgetastic · 17/11/2024 10:08

Hualalai · 17/11/2024 10:07

That sounds like an excessive amount of time too. It's hours and hours a week. It would irritate me too. No one needs to practice that much, it's being done for recreation not practice.

Recreation being a bad thing? Perhaps it's helping the anxiety of those doing the ringing?

Perhaps OP could join ? ( seriously )

Due to circumstances didnt have a choice on location and was unaware they would ring for several hours at a time due to anxiety and stress it drives me mad and at times feels like torture last Sunday was 5'5 hours of it non stop it over 3 hours twice a week

They're very lucky to have such a dedicated team of clangers! Last weekend may have been a special for Remembrance Day. Many religions have some kind of calling to people.

Cherrysoup · 17/11/2024 10:10

Seriously?! I was delighted to hear a local church bell ringing yesterday, think it was a wedding, the road outside was lined with cars.

Commoncold · 17/11/2024 10:10

Proudtobeanortherner · 17/11/2024 10:08

This is a joke, right?

It is beginning to feel like one when you consider the fact churches typically have a holy communion/eucharist at 8 and a general service at 10/1030.

DancefloorAcrobatics · 17/11/2024 10:10

@Isxmasoveryet - you know, if you can't beat them, join them!

I bet you have a group of bell ringers in your neighbourhood. Great fun and good for your mental health/ anxiety. 😉

Miyagi99 · 17/11/2024 10:11

They tend to ring every Sunday like that especially if it’s a church that holds weddings and then an evening a week bell ringing practice - which you would be welcome to go along to, might give you a different perspective? Our local one chimes every quarter of an hour, longer on the hour all through the night, you do get used to it.

Some posters need to read all the OP’s posts, because you are not looking good with your responses.

OP has been moved into a hostel near to the church through no choice of their own. She is not a townie twat who has bought a house next to the church and is complaining about the noise. Have some empathy

That information would have been useful in the first post then, not everyone has the time to read all subsequent posts. OP asked whether they were unreasonable for objecting to the sound of church bells. OK. In light of new information OP is not being unreasonable but it’s a matter of opinion and the bells should not be stopped because of one persons opinion. I don’t like the sound of traffic but I’ve lived on busy roads in the past and haven’t expected people to stop driving on that road because I don’t like the sound of traffic.

Diyextension · 17/11/2024 10:12

I work with a bell ringer……shes weird……think you would have to be to be one. And deaf

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 17/11/2024 10:12

OP you are in a tough situation. I would buy ear defenders and perhaps see if there is something you could do on a Sunday morning. Could you go out for a walk or out for a coffee even if it’s just McDonalds to get you away for a bit.

Screamingabdabz · 17/11/2024 10:13

If you are in a hostel then your situation is likely to be temporary. So it won’t be forever. But I’m sorry, YABU. Church bells have been ringing in this country for a thousand years and as annoying as they are to you right now, they bring a sense of cultural consistency and comfort to many people, whether they’re church goers or not.

Twice a week is because they have to practice

Last Sunday was Remembrance

There will be the odd wedding, funeral and special occasion.

I'm near a church and I love hearing them

Ok, having seen your update, do you know how long you'll have to be there? Noise cancelling headphones would definitely help in the short term

Ebabllisstggoffor · 17/11/2024 10:13

I love the sound of church bells. I would suggest you move @Isxmasoveryet .

@mrpotatocat

Hualalai · 17/11/2024 10:15

I understand why people are saying that bell ringing is part of our tradition but times change. The number of people going to church is getting smaller and smaller so the bell ringing isn't representing the whole community like it used to.

Just because something has been done for years and years doesn't make it ok.

Also, I wonder if the this thread would have received the same replies if it was a different religions place of worship that was making the noise.

Toseland · 17/11/2024 10:15

I love church bells, it reminds me that there is still an England despite all that is going on today. I also love our Town Hall chimes and think it's brilliant I can tell the time without having to look at a clock.
