8am to 11 every Sunday morning 7pm to 10 pm every Thursday and whenever they can in between

If it’s 8-11 every Sunday morning that’s very unusual. Every church I have attended has rung the bells for a few minutes just before the service. A sort of warning that if you are not already in church you had better hurry because the service is about to start.
Bellringing practice on Thursday and perhaps for a wedding in between seems reasonable. Perhaps you could go to the church and speak to the vicar and ask why they are ringing for so long on a Sunday.

HelenWheels · 17/11/2024 09:27

it was remembrance sunday last weekend
or is it the same today?

Yousay55 · 17/11/2024 09:29

5 hours of bell ringing is quite a lot! I love bell ringing and even I would find that amount overwhelming.
If you had no choice to live where you do, could you ask the church to limit the bell? I can’t imagine why any church would have them ringing for that long.
Perhaps try and move if you can.

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 17/11/2024 09:30

When we moved into our house we didn’t realise the bells were rung on the quarter hour, and on Sunday and for weddings, funerals and practice. My kids were disturbed by them, but after a few weeks they weren’t. Now we don’t notice them at all. I think the suggestion of reframing your perception is good, think of it as a symbol of your new start. When you hear them reflect on how you are now safe, hopefully it’s a temporary situation and when you move on the bells will still be there. Wishing you peace, OP.

8-11 isn't 5.5 hours...

You know the times they ring most of the time. So plan for it. Ear plugs or headphones. Go for a walk further away. Find a Maccies to sit in for a couple of hours.

I'm going to take a gamble here and presume that the church was there before you moved in nearby...

YABU

😆

Glittertwins · 17/11/2024 09:32

Sorry, didn't see the further info there.

YABVVVVU

OldTinHat · 17/11/2024 09:34

YABVU.

The church didn't just pop up overnight.

MarketValveForks · 17/11/2024 09:35

Of course you are being unreasonable.
If you don't like the sound it's very simple to move to somewhere out of earshot. The church was there for hundreds of years before you came along.

LlynTegid · 17/11/2024 09:38

YABU.

Like my local church they are set times.

crumblingschools · 17/11/2024 09:40

Was it just because it was Remembrance services last week. I didn’t think they rang through services but to call you to services

it is not that simple

Blueblell · 17/11/2024 09:40

I love the sound of church bells

LisaD1 · 17/11/2024 09:42

YABU, same as people who move next to shooting ranges, farms, schools etc then complain about it.

im close to a shooting range, laying here now listening to gun shots and knowing the new neighbours will be moaning about to as it’s the first thing they did when they moved in.

both they and you should have done research before buying a house!

Fluufer · 17/11/2024 09:42

Our local church practices on Wednesdays, it lasts hours and is absolutely awful to listen to 😂
I still don't mind, because the church predates my house and if they don't practice Sundays will be equally awful.

It hostel so not brought

Goldbar · 17/11/2024 09:44

I hope you manage to move to somewhere more suitable for your needs soon. Wishing you the best.

While normally I wouldn't rank church bells as a justifiable annoyance (we have a nursery on our road which does make a lot of noise when the children are outside playing, which can be irritating when wfh, but obviously not something I would complain about), it's different if actually you have no control over where you are living and so have had no agency in making the decision about which annoyances you can put up with and which you'd rather avoid. The powerlessness amplifies minor things, I imagine, and I hope you are in a better situation soon.

Hopelessinhomecounties · 17/11/2024 09:45

Is the pun ‘aloud’?

Halvana · 17/11/2024 09:48

Edited, was maybe taking this a bit literally.

Do you genuinely not understand or are you trying to pick up a vulnerable, distressed person on their written English?

If it's a genuine question, there are polite ways of asking.

8am to 11 every Sunday morning 7pm to 10 pm every Thursday and whenever they can in between

They have church services on Sunday mornings and there is no way the bells are ringing all the way through the services.

No church bellringers ring for this long this regularly. Practice is typically once a week for two hours at most, ringing before services is usually around 30 minutes. Occasionally there is some extra ringing after, for instance, weddings. Even more occasionally they ring quarter peels lasting around 40-50 minutes, or a full peal lasting 3 hours, but getting together a band to ring a full peal isn't easy as only the most experienced ringers do that - so it's pretty rare.

Angelofmycoins · 17/11/2024 09:49

I love church bells, I grew up with them.in small village so I'm used to it i suppose.

Ime you won't be popular for complaining to anyone

Lindy2 · 17/11/2024 09:50

The church bells have been ringing a lot more years (centuries) than you have been complaining.

If the sound of long standing traditions in the area where you live bothers you so much get some ear plugs.

Sharptonguedwoman · 17/11/2024 09:51

Isxmasoveryet · 17/11/2024 09:13

Due to circumstances didnt have a choice on location and was unaware they would ring for several hours at a time due to anxiety and stress it drives me mad and at times feels like torture last Sunday was 5'5 hours of it non stop it over 3 hours twice a week

YABU. Ask for a transfer and buy some noise cancelling headphones. Love our church bells.
