Was it always this bad? I haven’t watched it in years and years but remember once looking forward to it. Turned it on tonight and it’s one of the worst things I’ve ever watched. Almost embarrassing.

@TwoLeftSocksWithHoles well I thought it was funny 😂

I think a lot of us did. And I say that as someone with one dicky eye.

I haven't watched it since Terry Wogan was on it, but the build up to it is so unbearable I avoid the whole thing.

I found out some time ago that he was the only one to draw a wage and keep it rather than donating his time. It put me right off him. For those that will ask where I found that out, I honestly can't remember.

I wonder what kind of ratings it does nowadays? It can't be very high.

I tried to look it up but couldn’t find anything. Would be really interested to see how current ratings compare to previous years.

I watched it tonight for the first time in years. It was awful.

Where was the Eastenders cast singing a Queen or Abba mega mix, a cast of a theatre show coming post show to also do a mega mix (guessing the 10pm finish has put an end to that), a sketch where a random celebrity turns up in a sitcom or the switch to your region where some local DJ was sitting in a bath of beans

That was the CIN I remember. Always had a feeling that it was getting closer to Christmas. But tonight was woeful and the only decent thing was the Girls Aloud single that they cut half way through then repeated it at the end

Don't get me started on that Gladiators nonsense…

Local radio BBC all did Swims this year.
I'm sure they were all individual in years past but now they all do the swim.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 16/11/2024 19:12

It has always been awful.

I remember it all becoming known, it seems ages ago now, and he said he hadn't realised he got paid. Hard to believe, I know, but presumably he paid his agent and accountant to deal with things like that.

It put me off him a bit, but I suppose he might have been telling the truth.

oneuponedown · 16/11/2024 19:53

Is a shame. I used to remember looking forward to watching it but have found it awful the last few years, dislike
Most of the presenters that they use every year, I'm sure they used to do comedy sketches etc (or was that comic relief) and it used to be a good watch but gone down hill for sure.

Chris and Rosie Ramsay are two of the worst things to happen to television in the last few years. Truly cringe.

I've always happily donated as long as I'm not expected to sit through an evening of utter dross.

I think it's always been buttock-clenchingly naff.

sauvignonplonk1 · 16/11/2024 20:38

Always avoided it like the plague!

They used to do things like Doctor Who and Strictly segments too.

OonaStubbs · 16/11/2024 22:23

Why can't they put something good on TV instead?

Councilhousecheekbones · 17/11/2024 04:15

I thought the boy who took part in the Greatest Showman was horribly patronised. It made me uncomfortable.

The presenters were not great - Mel G making endless corny jokes.

The films about the children who have experienced hardship and serious illness are always really sad.

OonaStubbs · 16/11/2024 15:32

The BBC should be sold off and the proceeds given to the poor.

They could at the very least take down the Eric Gill statue and dispose of it, if they really are in the slightest bit concerned about vulnerable children.

I believed him, to be honest. Also, his agent wasn't purely doing it out of a misguided kindness for Terry, as they would also have banked their cut from it.

He was so passionate about CIN, it wouldn't surprise me at all if he hadn't personally given far more from his own personal income.

Plus, he may have been the only big-name celebrity to be paid, but most of the people working on the show would have been paid - including the camera and lighting operators, admin, caterers etc. etc. I'm guessing that the producer(s) would have been on quite a nice salary too, except they aren't household names.

I may be wrong, but my impression of Terry is that, whilst he obviously enjoyed the privileges and luxury lifestyle that fame brought with it, he was never obsessed with getting more and more once he had 'arrived'. I 100% cannot imagine that he was the driving force in garnering a salary for CIN night. Moreover, don't forget that the salary came from the BBC and not CIN, so if he did know about it, he might well have passed it straight on and thought "Better in CIN's pockets than the BBC's".

Finally, he was instrumental in ensuring that Jimmy Savile was never allowed to get involved with CIN, much as he and his supporters kept on pushing and clamouring to do. Yes, it would have been much better had JS been exposed from the outset, rather than it remaining an 'open secret' at the BBC; but at least Terry was determined that he would never get his filthy hands on CIN.

Maybe that's how it will end up. Rather than entertaining viewers as they give, they could do an about turn and say that they will keep on putting worse and worse content on BBC1 on a prime Friday night unless folk give more!

Councilhousecheekbones · 17/11/2024 11:42

Ssd - it was uncomfortable viewing. The poor kid was reduced to making a speech about inclusivity. Felt for him, especially when Mel G made fun of his mullet hairstyle.

I thought his mum looked uneasy, but perhaps she was just emotional.

'Coloured'? Hmm

Yeah?

That was the joke.

Not allowed to be funny or clever anymore?

Probably not...I see MN have deleted my original post.

Have been saying there's too many Daily Mail and Daily Express readers in here these days...are we only allowed to say things that those type of people will understand now?

MN only interested in clicks, not conversation, analysis and opinions...

Coloured? Did you not detect the mocking tone of the message, Mook?

No I didn't.
Unfortunately I'm so used to dodgy comments on MN nowadays, it's hard to tell anymore.

Hmmm, ok, fair enough...

Amusingly, just as I was reading this, a pop-up message from MN came up urging me to sign up for their Daily email.

I read it as "sign up for our Daily mail..."

Hey ho...
