Was it always this bad? I haven’t watched it in years and years but remember once looking forward to it. Turned it on tonight and it’s one of the worst things I’ve ever watched. Almost embarrassing.

Yeah it definitely used to be on til about 2am. It would be very friendly and PG until about 10pm then the (gasp) more adult things would start.

Could never be arsed with it, I loved Casualty when I was younger and they always took it off to show CiN.

Squarehoot · 15/11/2024 23:02

Totally agree. No charisma or big names. I like Vernon and Rochelle but Mel is unlikeable, very stage schooly and doesn’t come across as genuine.

I can’t believe it’s finished at 10pm (not that I’ve watched, we just came home 5 mins before the end and saw they were doing the ‘final grand total’). Is it just because I was looking at it from a child’s perspective and therefore 10pm was really late or did it used to be on so much later? I have recollections of like 2am?!

Yes it used to move to BBC2 for the news then back to BBC1 after it

Not sure what you mean. Comic relief helps communities abroad and in the UK. I’m sure the premise was originally for the crisis in many African countries that faced drought/war/lack of basic facilities but they certainly do use the money for uk projects and charities as well.

It would be interesting to see the ratings, I bet they're not great..

WTF?!

So why the hell do you think that Lenny Henry is the "face" for overseas aid appeals?! Because he is black?

His mother is Jamaican, but he was born in Dudley, about 30 miles away from where I am sitting right now. My daughter is half Jamaican, does that make her the poster girl purely based on her colour?

Reported.

Whoopsmahoot · 15/11/2024 23:05

Stopped watching and giving to it when I heard Terry Wogan took a fee.

TheHangingGardensOfBasildon · 15/11/2024 23:08

It sounds like I'm in the minority, but I really like Mel. Love her when she does all the Eurovision stuff too.

Used to absolutely love it, the last. 5/6 years have been shit. We watch (have it on in the background whilst doing someth8ng else) it still just because, loved eastenders big thing they used to do each year, miss all the real comedy.

Not saying it made it all OK, but wasn't it his agent who negotiated it all and Terry knew nothing about it?

Yes I do. He seems genuinely moved by the stories. I know what he did.

ThatsNotMyTeen · 15/11/2024 23:10

At least they didn’t have Matt Wassname and his bloody rickshaw this year. Unless they did and I missed it

AnnaMagnani · 15/11/2024 23:10

It was always shit, even back in the 80s.

Worst night of the year as nothing else would be on telly and we didn't have a video recorder to watch something else.

Absolute worst moment was always when they cut to find out what was happening in 'the regions'. Was always a man in a bath of baked beans in Southampton.

must be nice to receive a fee that huge and not even notice that you're receiving it.

I like Mel too. She's a much better watch than vacant Rochelle.

CIN was dire tonight. Kept checking in to see something and immediately switched over as couldn't believe the utter drivel.

No, it was all about Paddy McGuinness this year instead - he's the new rickshaw.

Wait until the BBC find a rising star called Richard Shaw who offers to do a huge CIN challenge for them - they'll poop their pants with the sheer excitement Grin

I'm old enough to remember when it started, and I think the fact it was a novelty carried it for a few years. Terry Wogan was amusing.

It's been utter shit for about 30 years though. Just the same tired boring shit, people doing 'wacky' things to raise money, the same presenters doing the whole 'what a saint I am, give me an OBE' fucking shit.

Kids probably enjoy it and nag their parents into giving the money.

Elphamouche · 15/11/2024 23:19

It is shit now. It was always a big night for us, we’d donate/do something to get involved (we have still done things to get involved and bought DD an outfit) but then the evening was always a takeaway, good TV 7-10 and then past watershed stuff after 10.30. They would cut to local areas. It was a lot bigger than it is now.

We turned it off, it shit. It’s a good cause, the stories are obviously heartbreaking, but the fun TV element is awful.

Moonflower6 · 15/11/2024 23:23

I've always watched it every year. But tonight was especially bad. Don't think I will watch it again. Don't like Vernon L either

Peopleinmyphone · 15/11/2024 23:24

I just feel like as a country we should look after disabled/poor children through taxes and government funded help instead of relying on charities. Maybe that's idealistic but I just watch it and think half the information should be kept private for those children and they should just be given the help anyway, without being made to appeal on the telly for charity.

AbbeyGrange · 15/11/2024 23:27

Does anyone remember back in the early days Joanna Lumley always took her clothes off? I'm talking waaay back
