to ask you to help me find this film

Once in a while I come on here and ask the same question...
I have a really strong and lovely memory of watching this film when I was a kid with my mum. It was black and white and looked a bit like abbot and costello style screwball comedy.
A family moved into a house, it was haunted by a ghost or several ghosts.
The ending saw the family drive off down the road after selling the house, unbeknownst to them, the ghosts were all sitting on the back of their old fashioned car (1930s style car with no roof and a suitcase on the back) they were facing away from the driver and looking at the camera , Then 'The End' in swirly writing came on.
It looked to be similar vintage to Abbot and Costello. I would have been watching this in about 1984 and it was old then.
It definitely isn't The Ghost and Mrs Muir. I have seen that and know it well.
I'd love to find it. Anyone recognise it?

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 15/11/2024 15:44

Is it one of the 'Topper' films? There were four of them, starring Cary Grant.

crochetmonkey74 · 15/11/2024 15:47

No Neither of those

I forgot to say , it was on in the afternoon so definitely a silly rather than spooky one

no don't think so, just read the synopsis and it doesn't have anything about ghosts. I wish I could find it!

The Canterville Ghost maybe? Made in 1944 and there was a remake last year.

damebarbaracartlandsbiggestfan · 15/11/2024 16:27

The Ghost Breakers? 1940 film with Bob Hope and Paulette Goddard

Planesmistakenforstars · 15/11/2024 16:42

Spooks Run Wild?
Lucky Ghost?
The Ghosts of Berkeley Square?

damebarbaracartlandsbiggestfan · 15/11/2024 16:43

Wow, turns out there are a lot of screwball type haunted films. You could spend forever on Youtube searching!

I wonder if it may be from later than you think? I just say that as some of the 30s films look very poor quality unless they were major pictures.

I'm old enough to recall that the daytime TV schedule in the early 80s was (or seemed to be) wall-to-wall old films!

DollopOfFun · 15/11/2024 16:48

The Time of Their Lives (1946)?

tobee · 15/11/2024 16:49

Yeah I'm gonna want to see it when we find out!

ShiningforLeeBertie · 15/11/2024 16:51

Chatgpt says....

The movie you're describing sounds like it could be The Ghost Goes West (1935). This film features a ghost haunting a house and later follows the ghost's journey to a new location, where a family becomes involved with the haunting. The final scene, where ghosts appear in a car similar to the one you describe, fits the description of a vintage 1930s film.

While The Ghost Goes West is a comedy and horror film with a tone similar to some of the lighthearted films Abbott and Costello were part of, the specific scene with ghosts sitting on the back of a car with a suitcase and the swirly "The End" is a strong match to this movie.

If this isn't the one you're thinking of, it may still be a similar vintage ghost comedy film, but The Ghost Goes West definitely aligns with the general style and era you remember.

Scared Stiff with Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis?

crochetmonkey74 · 15/11/2024 21:00

Annoyingly it's none of these. Grrrr I really want to watch it again

Do you remember if it is British or American? (or anything else.) Is it definitely a full length film rather than an anthology?

Hopper123 · 15/11/2024 21:33

Type in 'list of comedy horror films' into Wikipedia whole list of them from 1920 onwards might be on there somewhere. I'd post a link but I'm a technophobe amd have no idea how to do it 😂

maddening · 15/11/2024 21:40

Burnt offerings?

Arran2024 · 15/11/2024 21:43

Are you sure it's a film? Could it be the Munsters tv show?

MyOtherProfile · 15/11/2024 21:48

My goodness I remember that film! No idea what it was though. Could it be the Chat GPT suggestion above of While the Ghost goes West?

waltzingparrot · 15/11/2024 21:55

Hold that ghost - was an Abbott and Costello film
