What is pooing on my lawn?

Gross pic attached pic.

Only look if you don't mind looking at what looks to be a dog turd but can't be because it's the back garden...

Has to be a Fox , no ?

TheYearOfSmallThings · 15/11/2024 09:20

Wow you have really got your hand right in there for scale!

I would assume fox poo although I would really need to smell it.

spiritgoat · 15/11/2024 09:21

It looks like cat poo to me, too. My tomcat does some pretty big turds. I have little hands and I think the turd to hand ratio would be pretty close in size to your picture.

Nannyfannybanny · 15/11/2024 09:23

When we lived on the outskirts of a village right next to fields, the fox poo was black sticky and flat like a cow pat, for some reason if you didn't get out there quick and scoop, our long hair collies loved rolling in it. The foxes have obviously taken all the dog toys that were in the garden.

Aibusadandhormonal · 15/11/2024 09:06

Any dog that's not the immediate neighbour would need to climb 3 fences to get in. We have nothing in the garden to entice them in...

Next question - now that we're pretty sure it's a dog... how do I broach that with the neighbours?!

As It’s a one off and you can’t be sure it’s dog poo, I would mention anything to neighbour. Just clean it up.

This! You really need to brave a prod!

Dog and Cat and Fox each have their own distinctive smell.

You’ll know if it’s fox 🤢

BSky · 15/11/2024 09:29

Another one to say dog poo. It looks too big for cat poo.

Fox poo has a very distinct smell 🤢 Also tends to have more bits in it in my experience.

If you are friendly with your neighbours could you ask them to do a poo check 🥴🙈 - if it is dog poo you'll need to find a solution together to stop the pooches coming in your garden. Hopefully they are nice! 💩😁

DeliciousApples · 15/11/2024 09:31

My moneys in next doors dogs getting through a hike in the fence or pushing the gate open or climbing over or sneaking under the gate.

Get a camera up and find out who the culprit is!!

KnigCnut · 15/11/2024 09:35

Cat.
I had a cat who had lower bowel problems. He didn't go often, but when he did, it was large!

Definitely not fox. You wouldn't want to get that close to the smell!

Aibusadandhormonal · 15/11/2024 09:37

It doesn't smell like a cat. 🤢 we've had cats before and I was retching while clearing it up.

On reflection it really can't be the neighbours dog. He's a very nervous thing and would probably have a melt down if he found himself stuck in our garden.

Must be apple-full fox. The middle one looks a bit pointy.
I will let it pass for now. And keep an eye out. Should prob get a night vision camera...

Thanks everyone for taking time to study the turds. Appreciated!

Hedgehog

Snowkitty · 15/11/2024 09:41

I've got cats and would say it's cat poo. But as a rule a cat would go where it can be covered up, so in soil borders, fine gravel or sand for example if they find an uncovered sandpit. So generally I don't think they would choose the lawn if there was a nearby better alternative. I think fox poo smells particularly awful from what I hear, so that could help you rule that in / out? My other suspects would be hedgehogs, who have left me gifts on the lawn in the past, but I think it might be too big.

GeminiGiggles · 15/11/2024 09:44

I'm leaning towards fox or badger. If it's got a "fishy" smell to it it's fox.

Alternatively you could be a really helpful neighbour and take next doors dog for a walk... for the process of elimination (pun absolutely intended!)

Saisong · 15/11/2024 09:44

We have a fox den in our garden. This time of year their poos look just like that. The dark stinky ones are in the spring.

1754sunset · 15/11/2024 09:45

Can you see into the neighbours garden. Get a zoom lenses and computer their garden poop with yours.

oakleaffy · 15/11/2024 09:53

Fluufer · 15/11/2024 09:19

I think that's cat poo. We've got a massive ginger tom who comes and shits in our garden and driveway and his poos can be that big. I know without doubt it is him because he is shameless and will make eye contact as he does it.

I look after an indoor cat and she's a TINY cat, but her poos are MASSIVE.

Bigger than my Whippet's poos. {I once had a pic as she did a massively long one that stood up like the leaning tower of Pisa } A feat of poo engineering that was quite impressive.

That looks like cat poo to me...especially laid side by side like that.

Cat poo can be massive, especially if on a not very good diet.

My Whippet's poos are nearly always small and firm, BUT if given a cereal type kibble, or she eats toast the poos become softer and bulkier.

Leaning tower of Pisa 😂😂😂😂😂

Shitlord · 15/11/2024 10:07

Fox, I'd say. I used to have them in my last garden. Miss them like mad.

Does it pong to high heaven? Definitely fox if so.

Leaning tower of Poosa, surely?

Hedgehog

Unlikely, unless its a giant one! 😆

Nordione1 · 15/11/2024 10:16

You would know it was fox by the smell..nothing like it...very distinctive..I spend a lot of time scrubbing fox turd off my dogs. Their poo is also different. That looks like a dog poo to me. Something larger than a jack russell.

I've got a childrens book on spores somewhere! Will have a look.

Fireworknight · 15/11/2024 10:19

JC03745 · 15/11/2024 08:58

Do you have a potty training toddler? If the garden is secure, its either something that could climb a fence (giant cat or fox) or someone from inside your household! I too would have said its a dog. Maybe a badger?
https://www.wildlifetrusts.org/wildlife/how-identify/identify-poo

Thank you for that link. I always wondered what certain poo was that I pass on my dog walk. It’s badger poo. Much larger than I expected to come out of a badger!

allflownthenest · 15/11/2024 10:42

I think you would be surprised at how big Hedgehog poo is. We have no foxes where we live and were trying to work out what was pooing on our lawn....

Can't get part you putting your bare hand right down on the grass next to a shit and taking a photo. Anyway it's either a cat or fox.

Flossflower · 15/11/2024 10:46

I am fairly sure it is a cat. It can’t be fax poo as that is much darker.
