Companies spending millions on Xmas adverts in today's society

I find it odd that companies are spending millions on Xmas adverts when many of now skip adverts or stream without adverts.

I even skip bits on certain shows such as the "coming up, next time" bits

If you watch 10 hours of TV a week, which is doable (1 hour per day on work days, 5 on days off) and skip the adverts, you save enough time in a year to watch 3 US TV seasons.

They spend the money so that people talk about it and then enough people who would normally skip adverts actually actively seek it out to watch in order to know what people are talking about…

It’s PR and about keeping the brand out there.

Not sure that's true, I didn't buy from John Lewis when I was 20 either! It's something you just find yourself doing one day, like listening to The Archers or realising you're in a garden centre for no good reason 🫣

It's like slipping into a warm bath - embrace it! 😂😂😂

Edingril · 15/11/2024 06:06

How many hours do people spend about Christmas ads the obsession how much to spend and what to buy etc.

Do you think it is some random thought they have come up with because they are bored?

BatshitCrazyWoman · 15/11/2024 06:16

I watch things on ITVX and All4, so I do see ads - I've seen the John Lewis Christmas one a few times (like it) and that stupid Aldi carrot one (not a fan). I mostly use ad breaks to pop to the loo, or do a bit of dusting or something. Even if I don't deliberately watch them, I'm aware of them, and there must be a lot of people like me!

And they usually have more disposable income than younger people too. That's why they waste money shopping at the overrated Waitrose.

I won't stand for the waitrose slander, the essentials range is a decent price and the quality of their stuff is head and shoulders above the rest. I agree aside from that though, the target demographic they must feel make it worthwhile to them.

dollyop · 15/11/2024 06:31

It's 'salience'. You might not see the advert, but you'll read the coverage, you'll see threads like this discussing it.

It serves to remind you of the existence of John Lewis etc, keep it in your mind. Doesn't matter whether you like the ad or not. It's simply strengthening the connection of 'John Lewis' and 'buy Christmas presents'.

the80sweregreat · 15/11/2024 07:12

I'd shop in Waitrose more if it wasn't such a trek to get to my closest one
Wiser aisles and some nice diff

the80sweregreat · 15/11/2024 07:12

.. different bits

Some of us who have kids or grandchildren who are 20 something watch Netflix, too, you know.

”plenty” and “some” are not mutually exclusive terms, are they? ‘Everyone” and “no one” are but neither of us used those terms.

JustMarriedBecca · 15/11/2024 07:28

It's very short sighted to say you don't watch ads so it's a waste of their money. You're on a forum discussing it. You are part of the marketing strategy. Helping to keep the brand in the public eye whilst you talk about it.

As for Christmas ads, I'm always interested in commercial and business strategy and will watch and discuss Christmas ads even though I wouldn't at other times of the year.

MissTrip82 · 15/11/2024 07:35

I haven’t lived in the UK for 30 years and I’ve still seen the waitrose, boots and John Lewis ads. They go viral.

mitogoshigg · 15/11/2024 07:35

We watch live tv as so our adult children, tv isn't dead plus people are watching the adverts on you tube as in seeking them out!
