Companies spending millions on Xmas adverts in today's society

I find it odd that companies are spending millions on Xmas adverts when many of now skip adverts or stream without adverts.

I even skip bits on certain shows such as the "coming up, next time" bits

If you watch 10 hours of TV a week, which is doable (1 hour per day on work days, 5 on days off) and skip the adverts, you save enough time in a year to watch 3 US TV seasons.

But I like Kevin the Carrot! 😂

Adverts play on YouTube and on the side of websites and all over SM. Even some streaming sites have ads
They are discussed and have news articles dedicated to them so you don't even see them until much later than you know the plot sometimes

People are allowed to buy presents, frankly you sound quite miserable.

No I am not miserable. We get presents for birthdays.

I tell you something. Go on eBay and google "unwanted Xmas present" and similar wording on BD and there are loads of listings.

People are becoming skint because they are buying unnecessary crap and for their boyfriend's sister's fiance's aunt. They are not related to you so don't bother with buying anything

If it wasn't worth the bother, they wouldn't be doing it. They are not daft.

Why are birthdays different?

You said parents, not distant relations too

Another thing that winds me up with some supermarkets' Xmas adverts are the tables laid full of food. Yet you need the entire street's worth of ovens to cook it all.

This exactly! Like on the picture here! And who, pray tell, is going to cook all this food (even if someone DID have 4 ovens and 4 hobs?!)

Hint; there's a 99% chance it will be a woman!

But no-one has 4 ovens and 4 hobs anyway.

Waits patiently for someone to come onto the thread and brag say they have 4 ovens and 4 hobs n their 24 ft X 26 ft kitchen! 😆

I think the amounts spent are insane.

But marketing is that one dimensional. The annual Xmas advert isn't about how many people are watching on TV in real-time. It catapults the company into mainstream media outlets, they're talked about extensively on social media and the subsequent increase in website traffic makes it worth the cash spent.

I think that Christmas ads will rapidly change as Gen Z are coming up to an age where they will start buying Christmas food etc and they don’t watch tv. In the case of John Lewis, Gen Z won’t be shopping there - the ads are aimed at the more affluent parents and grandparents instead. It won’t surprise me if future Christmas ads are the length of a TikTok or designed with a smartphone screen in mind.

Notyouthful · 14/11/2024 19:48

@LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway zoom in the photo you have uploaded. I can see bottles of Thtee Mills wine. That is the old label. It’s £3 for a bottle in B&M. Plus it’s only 5.5%!

How can people drink that fermented vinegar?

Christmas dinner should not have cheap n awful wine

Plus how many people have decided to shop at a shop because they have the best Xmas ad?

My parents and I don't do Xmas presents. More people need to do the same. Stop wasting time, money and stress buying stuff on things that people don't need.

Bah, humbug!

Wednesdaysdrag · 14/11/2024 20:39

Christmas adverts create alot of interest around brands.

Some people enjoy them. Adverts aren’t really just for TV. They are used on social media and people watch them.

These are businesses and they won’t spend money unless they can prove it generates revenue. You may not be swayed by them, though you possible are and just don’t realise it. Supermarkets also spend fortunes and the psychology of shopping to influence shoppers and most of the time we aren’t aware of it.

You don’t like them, that’s fine. These businesses will have plenty of proof they do and so do them.

benefitstaxcredithelp · 14/11/2024 20:42

We are pawns in a capitalist society. Of course they’re going to try to sell us more stuff then we need or even want. Yes it is an obscene waste of money OP.

SerenityNowSerenityNow · 14/11/2024 21:01

Why do you think it's your job to tell people how to do Christmas?

BleekHaus · 14/11/2024 21:04

I’m sure if they didn’t get a return on their investment, they wouldn’t do it.

Not sure that's true, I didn't buy from John Lewis when I was 20 either! It's something you just find yourself doing one day, like listening to The Archers or realising you're in a garden centre for no good reason 🫣

MermaidMummy06 · 14/11/2024 21:11

I'm finding it harder to skip ads, and more tv / YouTube etc type platforms are adding them, and increasing the amount of ads.

I do remember reading ages ago it was becoming less effective as we can scroll while ads are on, which is why we're seeing things like affiliate marketing and influencers doing paid endorsements, because people (stupidly) trust them!

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 14/11/2024 12:58

And they usually have more disposable income than younger people too. That's why they waste money shopping at the overrated Waitrose.

Snob

Ads are already designed now so that they can be shown in several forms:
A full length ad which may air once or twice on TV and may show on YT
Shorter forms shown on TV and as ads on social media sites
Just as picture forms online

PickAChew · 14/11/2024 23:06

Catza · 14/11/2024 12:56

You are not their target demographic. Plenty of older people don't have streaming services and are more likely to buy their Christmas platters from Waitrose than a 20-something who watches Netfix.

Some of us who have kids or grandchildren who are 20 something watch Netflix, too, you know.

I'm mostly offended by the peas and broccoli for a supposed Christmas dinner. And what's with the random pie that no one is even eating?

I loathe adverts and mute them immediately on the tv. So does everyone in my house and everyone I know. Online, I either pay a subscription or use adblockers. These companies are wasting their money as far as I'm concerned.

Oblomov24 · 15/11/2024 05:40

More fool JL then.

Oblomov24 · 15/11/2024 05:46

Just watched it. Thought it was fine. But the cost? Silly JL.
