Help! Mouse!!!

Rastamousse · 13/11/2024 05:52

I’ve been woken up by loud scratching! It’s coming from my fucking wardrobe!
last winter I had a mouse issue but haven’t since-it’s been warm so they’ve obviously been on holiday!
I can’t do anything about this right now as my toddler is asleep in my bed. Plus, what the fuck would I actually do?!
every time I make a noise, the noise stops! 😩😩
help! I’m the only ‘grown up’ that lives here and I really want my mum!!

Worse still, the kids Xmas presents are in the wardrobe! The little fuckers are probably having a party on the selection boxes!

Well, the toddler is awake and is seemingly quite excited at the idea of having a mouse(I’m being optimistic with it being singular!)
we’ve put the tv on and are watching from the safety of bed. At least I can’t hear it now.
I’ve put 2 traps in the wardrobe, with fresh blobs of Nutella(asdas own so I hope they aren’t fussy) on them.
I’ll be going out as soon as I can, to stock up on more goodies to rid me of them(again!) at first light.

I’m well aware I’m talking to myself, but it’s slightly better than hysterical rocking in a corner, muttering profanities

Solidarity OP. I'm terrified of them.

changedname1979 · 13/11/2024 06:20

yikes!!

have you removed the selection boxes from the wardrobe? I certainly wouldn’t put any food back in there (other than the traps)

it’s easy for me to say but they’ll be more scared of you than you are of them so the chances of you seeing one let alone have one come towards you are pretty close to zero.

rockingbird · 13/11/2024 06:22

Oh Lordy how are you still in bed, I'd be out the house already 🥴 is there anyone you can call? I have a huge fear of mice, I'd be an absolute wreck right now!!

Rastamousse · 13/11/2024 06:24

Im so happy to see you both! Thank you!
only time i e ever seen one, is in a trap(thank god!) the noise has stopped now the tv is on. I want to napalm the whole house, but with a curious toddler and dogs, it’s not ideal

Definitely have one here too, have always used live traps to get them out then set them free down the road but this mouse isn’t going for it. Solidarity op, hope your mouse leaves! (Oh and I have a cat and a dog- no interest- probably a good thing as our old cat used to play with them🙈)

I’m weirdly calm at the moment. I think because it’s going to be light soon, I know I can deal with it better then.
I’ll be putting on wellies, rubber gloves and a hoodie(hood up!) once the kids are at school, dragging everything out the wardrobe and putting LOTS of poison down the back!

Our cat brings in live mice and shrews and lets them go so I’m used to catching them and am not scared of them. Quite the contrary - I feel awful for them having been in the cats jaws and now terrified for their poor little lives.

Top tips:

Remove anything they can hide behind
Block all exits - no matter how small
They are fast so move quickly
Get some Tupperware or a bowl - something with a rim wide enough for them to be under that won’t squash their tail
Once cornered quickly pop it over them
Very carefully, slide something sturdy and flat underneath it so they are contained (flat cardboard works well)
Hold the cardboard firmly underneath with one hand and the Tupperware on top with the other so it doesn’t move
Relocate mouse

Please don’t poison them.

While I agree with your method(I love animals) this simply isn’t an option for me. It’s dog eat dog, I’m afraid

Use traps that kill them "humanely" and call pest control, worth every penny. The key is to find their entry points and close them for good, otherwise they keep coming. Store all food away safely so they can't get to it and keep the house and kitchen clean and free from crumbs etc. Good luck!

Perfectlystill · 13/11/2024 06:49

I don't think you can big strong enough poison online.

Call in your council's pest control dept - they are usually the cheapest and the best. They put down poison and your problem is sorted.

Let's hope it doesn't eat the poison and then one of your dogs finds it and eats it.

Indeed. Leading cause of death for our wonderful birds of prey as well, eating poisoned rodents.

Can’t condone murdering animals.

My neighbour had rats during covid which got into my house under the floors (terrace). I called the Council for help and they shrugged their shoulders, said they couldn't help and to Google pest control services.

This is the time of year mice do decide to take up residence, though. They're buggers! Well done with getting the poison. Good luck with evicting your new lodger(s)!

PrincessHoneysuckle · 13/11/2024 07:09

We got rid of one with peanut butter on a trap

macshoto · 13/11/2024 07:13

Have caught 4 in our bedroom so far this season. First time we've had mice reach the second floor of our house.

Much prefer death-dealing traps rather than the (so-called) humane / live traps or poison.

At least in an old house like ours, it is almost impossible to block up all entry points that are accessible to a mouse - it is remarkable just how small a space a mouse can get through.

Sunshineandrainbow · 13/11/2024 07:15

When I had a mouse I bought a pack of two traps from b and q that were fantastic. Once mouse is in it you just chuck the whole thing.

Crankyaboutfood · 13/11/2024 07:19

poisons beyond cruel as are glue traps. ideally live trap and release or use a quick kill trap. it’s just a mouse. make sure you seal the holes.

You absolutely can we had a,rat problem🤮
And sorted it with poison from amazon.

whojamaflip · 13/11/2024 07:26

We have mice too! Despite having 7 cats!

Currently they are partying it up in the kitchen, my bedroom and the utility room 😩

Cats are sitting for hours staring at certain parts of the room and to be fair they've caught 6 so far - we do live on a farm and this is our annual infestation. We do manage to catch them all eventually but it takes nerves of steel listening to the little buggers running through the ceiling voids!

Best bait for traps I have found is toffee if it's any help?

mitogoshigg · 13/11/2024 07:30

Please don't order poison, there's children in the house and it's horrible for any animal that gets it. Humane traps, release hundreds of metres away, block how they get it. Worked great for me.
