To think Justin Welby shouldn't have to resign?

It sounds like he was told the police had been informed. I'm not sure he's personally responsible for this.

YABU he is right to resign
YANBU he didn't need to resign

Resign? He should be arrested.

Lisanoonan · 12/11/2024 14:50

What happened?

Beyond the usual millions of church scandals. Did he do something?

username358 · 12/11/2024 14:51

I think it's because he didn't pursue the police investigation to see that it was being investigated. Apparently they were told not to interfere but later it turned out that it hadn't been reported properly so wasn't investigated.

He's being scapegoated and there are plenty of people who wanted to bring him down. More importantly, this is likely to be swept under the carpet and those who covered up the abuse, will continue in their jobs.

TryingAgainAgainAgain · 12/11/2024 14:54

He's certainly not the only senior member of the Church of England who should go, and go in utter shame.

peonym · 12/11/2024 14:54

Yes. If he's not actively trying to resolve and / or consistently and publicly trying to right wrongs of the church / show remorse / take appropriate safeguarding steps to make sure it can never happen again then he's a major part of the problem. He said himself he didn't do enough.

He was told about a member of the clergy who was assaulting children in 2012/2013. He did nothing about it and let the abuser carry on abusing children until the abusers' death in 2018.

IfYouLook · 12/11/2024 14:57

It happened on his watch. He knew. Of course he should resign

SixtySomething · 12/11/2024 15:00

Personally, I think he SHOULD resign as a way of showing that church leaders are doing more than paying lip service to preventing child abuse.

MisterPNumber23 · 12/11/2024 15:00

Oooo, it's like Wolf Hall without the gallows!

Redteacup · 12/11/2024 15:02

He has resigned. Glad he has but I really thought he was one of the better ones 😞

noblegiraffe · 12/11/2024 15:03

How can a supposed moral leader not immediately see that the moral thing to do in this situation is resign? It's utterly baffling.

He has.

DesertGecko · 12/11/2024 15:08

If a man holds a powerful position the likelihood that he is one of the good ones goes down. Power attracts a certain type. It’s a moral quagmire getting to the top. The good ones eventually get sick of wading through all of the muck and have to leave to save their sanity.

PaterPower · 12/11/2024 15:10

There’s been quite a lot on Welby, and what he knew, or should have known, about Smyth in the Private Eye over the last few years.

At the very, VERY, least he was amazingly incurious about it all. If I recall correctly, he was in friendly correspondence with Smyth after the allegations had been made known to him and, wittingly or otherwise, gave a stamp of approval to Smyth’s South African operations (where more allegations against him were being made).

Absolutely. He should have been defrocked and any other priests with knowledge of the abuse, who did nothing, or helped to conceal it ought to go, too.

VickyEadieofThigh · 12/11/2024 15:13

OP, imagine perhaps a school headteacher who was aware of the same allegations against a teacher, did nothing and stood back as the teacher moved on to another school where they continued to abuse children.

You don't think that headteacher should resign?

Mirabai · 12/11/2024 15:24

Of course he should.

skippy67 · 12/11/2024 15:25

He's resigned.

Nanny0gg · 12/11/2024 15:28

My problem is that he has dug his heels in and it's taken a huge amount of pressure to get him to go.

And now he decides: 'I must take personal and institutional responsibility, '

That's not what he said a little while ago

Enigma52 · 12/11/2024 15:31

Good riddance to him.
And as for keeping his wife and kids in our prayers; well what about the poor kids whose lives were ruined?

How many more cover ups must this country endure?

NeverDropYourMooncup · 12/11/2024 15:34

I wonder what currently unreleased information may have encouraged that sudden change of mind?

Mosalahiwoukd · 12/11/2024 15:40

Why should we keep protecting men in power who aided, abetted, protected or ignored child sexual abuse for their or their church’s own benefit or reputation?
Why??
Why do ‘men of god’ abuse their positions of power if they really are holier, better, than the rest of us?
They can all fuck off. Laying out laws and judgments and morals for others while abusing.
He’s got the morals of an alley cat, he’s been forced into this and I don’t doubt that he feels it’s unfair.
