It sounds like he was told the police had been informed. I'm not sure he's personally responsible for this.

YABU he is right to resign
YANBU he didn't need to resign

I expect he'll be resigning on a full pension + other lifetime income. The establishment looks after its own. He's a fucking disgrace. I don't know how people can think well of the church when it's stuffed to the gunnels with men who are happy to keep abuse hidden because it suits their powerbase. Kudos to those who tried to get it into daylight. If we have to continue with this crap, it's about time we had a female Archbishop, and there has never been a better time to argue the case.

A female like Paula Vennells maybe?

Edited to add someone already got here before me

WildGuide · 12/11/2024 17:46

I don’t think the systematic sexual, physical and psychological abuse of children is the kind of thing where the head of the organisation perpetrating that abuse can say ‘oh whoops, I thought someone else had told the police’ and then consider their responsibilities discharged.

Resign? He should be arrested.

THIS

YANVU

TempestTost · 12/11/2024 17:51

Ultimately, a job like ABC has a lot of elements around representation and credibility of the institution.

You aren't' owed anything in the job, and if your being there discredits the institution it's time to leave.

So even if we believe the best possible version of his involvement, it's best for him to resign.

ErrolTheDragon · 12/11/2024 17:54

Whilst that process sounds crap, if it's been referred to the police and no action taken, call me naive but what was the church as an employer supposed to do?

Inquire occasionally as to whether the individuals had been cleared or if investigations were still ongoing maybe?

have you read what he has been ignoring (if not actively covering up)?

He should be being investigated by the police. not having people say what a great guy he is.

I absolutely bloody despair.
Of course he should resign. He knew what went on he did nothing he did not follow up on what was going on, the paedophile went on to abuse other children in Africa. Wise up God's sake
Stop defending this man.

I didn’t say having a woman Archbishop would solve the issue. You only need to flip over to another thread to see how a woman trying to stand up against domestic violence is being pulled apart by mumsnetters because of her personal history and her absolute audacity to try and speak out for those who don’t have a voice.

Everyone, literally everyone, needs to take allegations of CSA way more seriously.

Is it the same woman married to the Head of the Church?

caringcarer · 12/11/2024 18:15

He stood by knowing hundreds of little boys were being abused and did nothing. That makes him evil in my eyes. Until he died he sent that abuser a Xmas card each year.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 12/11/2024 15:34

I wonder what currently unreleased information may have encouraged that sudden change of mind?

I heard on the radio he had a meeting with King Charles. No idea if that prompted the resignation.

Grandmasswagbag · 12/11/2024 18:21

And as well as church figureheads where are the police in all this? I read he was being investigated by Hants police. IME they are yet another extremely corrupt force.

Oh don't be ridiculous. He didn't commit any crime.
But he did the right thing.

Why should we keep protecting men in power who aided, abetted, protected or ignored child sexual abuse for their or their church’s own benefit or reputation?
Why??
Why do ‘men of god’ abuse their positions of power if they really are holier, better, than the rest of us?
They can all fuck off. Laying out laws and judgments and morals for others while abusing.
He’s got the morals of an alley cat, he’s been forced into this and I don’t doubt that he feels it’s unfair.

This.

Bet some dirt has been dug up on his own activities that's made him finally go.

They are all disgusting.

jaimelesoleil · 12/11/2024 18:25

I agree he shouldn't have had to resign...He should have been SACKED by the king and arrested for letting people get away with sexual abusing children.

Livinginaclock · 12/11/2024 18:25

He's disgusting.

Agree that thread is a disgrace and as for Welby he has always made my skin crawl, you can tell by just looking at him he is not a decent man, he should be prosecuted not retire on a fat pension, he is abhorrent.

PlumViper · 12/11/2024 18:29

Religion in one word = Power

hattie43 · 12/11/2024 18:29

He could have put a stop to this person and have him arrested to face justice . He didn't and that person now has died so will never face a court of law and subsequently the victims have no closure .
The church has a history of harbouring abusers and he has to go . His preaching of wokeness expecting us to be tolerant , etc is sickening now knowing his tolerance extended to a prolific abuser of children .
He should be arrested for hiding crimes .

BigAnne · 12/11/2024 18:30

The systemic rape of children within the Church seems to be regarded as trivial. You only have to look at KC's close relationship with Saville to see what a bunch of cunts they are.

Autumnismyfavouritetimeofyear · 12/11/2024 18:35

There is evidence he knew in 2013 and did nothing. Then lied about not knowing. He is close friends with the abuser. So yes, he needed to go.

You're the sort of person who makes up lynch mobs.

Dangerous bollocks.

Justsayit123 · 12/11/2024 18:38

He should be thoroughly ashamed of himself and Jesus should send him to hell when he gets to the pearly gates.

Wordsmithery · 12/11/2024 18:39

Lisanoonan · 12/11/2024 14:50

What happened?

Beyond the usual millions of church scandals. Did he do something?

No, he did not do something. He failed to report the horrific abuse he knew about, or to follow it up with the police or the victims.
By not doing something, he allowed the perpetrator to get away with it and helped prevent the victims from getting either justice or closure.
Worse than not doing something, he did nothing.
